I have been living in Shanghai for about 3 years and finally went down to the fabric market. I took the advice of one reviewer and went to booth number 338. They were awfully nice and offered suggestions. I had one simple jacket made, a copy of one I purchased from J. Crew. I also asked her to fix a seam on the collar of a cashmere sweater I had bought from Banana Republic. There was about a 2 inch section of the seam that had come loose. She agreed and told me to come back in 6 days. I came back in about 13. She told me the jacket wasn't ready. I asked her if it wasn't there or it wasn't finished. It wasn't finished. She asked if I could come back the next day, I couldn't. She told me she would deliver it later in a couple of days to my apartment. It never came. More than three weeks after the original date it showed up to my apartment, by Kuaidi, after much discussion and many phone calls and excuses, too big to wear. But the best part is that the simple seam I had asked her to sew up for me looked as if a child had done it, left handed with his eyes closed. Absolutely terrible.

I can't speak for the fabric market in general. People have gone and given good reviews. My friends have gone and loved it. Me, I don't think I'll be rushing back too soon. Maybe I am just used to a higher standard of quality. I vacationed in Vietnam some time ago and spent several days meandering through the tailor shops of Hoi'an. In three days Yali made me an incredible suit and two shirts completely from scratch and they even had me come in to try them all on and make adjustments. Booth 338 and Ms. Qiao couldn't get a seam and a corduroy jacket right in 3 plus weeks.

Good luck.

Go to Mrs. Qiao at booth 338. I've been using her for over 3 years for suits, tuxedos and overcoats. I send all my friends to her. Nicest lady. As long as you dont rush the delivery date, she makes it perfect.

Thanks MiamiGirl!

Any suggestions for booths to go to? Booths to avoid (besides the expat story that appears on this site re: a dispute over a retained receipt, which I still remain suspicious of in terms of how that transaction was navigated by the expat)?

Mens' suits typically range from 450-650 RMB, depending on fabric type and the size of the suit. My husband regularly gets shirts for about 100. We've paid a bit less, or a bit more, again depending on fabric or number of shirts ordered.

What would be a reasonable price to bargain for for mens suits & tailored shirts?
