What an excellent addition to Shanghai's burgeoning love affair with the grape. Like Dr. Wine down the street, Fossette offers pages of affordable wines by the bottle all with clear tasting notes in English. The food is also decent and there's a five-hour weekday happy hour on wine by the glass. An excellent spot for groups to come and try three or four different regions or grapes, without overspending.

Contributor Description

A refreshing wine and food concept in Shanghai.

Fossette's Philosophy: Drink Outside the Box... We bring freshness to the Shanghai wine scene by offering a fun and casual setting where to enjoy fine wines and great italian treats.

Our concept comes from our belief that wine should be enjoyed without the pressure of old traditions and strict foreign cultural customs.

We think it should be accessible to all and reflect the mixity of Shanghai.

In a modern and informal atmosphere, Fossette offers a greatly priced selection of handpicked wines from major producing countries that will delight, wine connoisseur, maturing amateurs, and everyone else.

Furthermore, aside the typical wine bar eats, we really worked hard to provide some outside-the-box food options for those hungry patrons who also like some easy and substantial fares along their glass of their favorite vintage.

Experience fine wines and great foods, relaxed background and soothing playlist and have fun with us at Fossette...

At Dr. Wine, business is booming, and Fossette adopts a similar formula with a long menu of affordable reds and whites, simply presented with clear tasting notes. Wines are listed by price, with a page of bottles under RMB150 and two more under RMB200. Connoisseurs can find bottles at the top end of the scale, but the chilled music and unpretentious feel makes us think this will be popular with those who like to gulp, not swirl and spit. Food ranges from pasta to salads and burgers, all from RMB50, and there are a few meatier plates ranging up to RMB80. A five-hour daily happy hour seals this as an excellent place for groups to buy and try, and teach themselves about affordable, fun wines.[HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Reviewed in January, 2011.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Our rating: 3/5[HTML_REMOVED]

Had a mediocre meal here last Monday. The service was slow, they told my friend the OJ was fresh-squeezed, which it clearly wasn't, the four cheese pizza seemed like takeout from some other restaurant and was actually four cheeses with olives, ham, mushrooms, etc. Weird. We had ordered the set dinner meal for RMB80 but were upcharged for each item that was apparently "extra" which was pretty lame. Maybe it was an off night but overall the experience left us unsatisfied. I might be back for a glass of wine but wouldn't recommend this place for a meal.

The decor is a relaxed bistro style and I liked the open front area with all the glass doors opened. However, the music was too loud and didn't seem to suit the venue for dining on a weekday evening or even after work drinks. The new set menu ranges from rmb60 (salad) to rmb180, plus an "Old Shanghai" selection of classics to choose from. As the set menu can only be ordered until 20:30, our group ordered a few tapas dishes to share plus main courses and dessert. My favourite was the mushrooms - a simple dish but full of flavours. The mussels grilled with cheese was the least satisfying dish. The salmon main course (rmb138) was served with roasted vegetables and some spinach. Well cooked and presented, though my friend who joined later had the salmon served on a piece of lettuce rather than the cooked spinach. For dessert we had the chocolate fondant and the semifreddo, but I didn't find either outstanding. I'd go back to try the set menu but some finesse in food quality and service would greatly improve the overall experience.

Had quite a decent croque monsuier last night (RMB48). It's a wee bit small (hence the 3 stars instead of 4), but it's very tasty, well made, crispy bread. Not sure how traditional it is, though. Comes with a side of chips and a tiny tiny salad. Can also recommend the pinot grigio for RMB278--a truly excellent wine. As refreshing as it gets on a hot muggy shanghai summer evening.

Nice place, perhaps a little bright- good vino selection, helpful staff, friendly. Haven't tried the food, but have gone many times with friends for an evening's boozing. Happy hour til 8(?) but no special on bottles, however it is easy to keep the per-bottle price below 200ish. I have dim, double visioned memories of a Californian called Red&Gold being reasonable bang for the buck. IN all, and excellent alternative to Dr. Wine, which has become increasingly crowded and in which is now very hard to find a decent seat.

I passed by this wine bar last Thursday with my cousin as we needed to grab a drink before dinner. The place looked cool and crowded so we went in. They had a free tapas buffet (apparently, every week) so we ended up spending the whole night there and honestly it was great! The buffet was big and tasty and the wine was gooood, now I wanna go back to try their regular menu :) I guessed their special deal worked on me haha :D

Been there twice in 3 weeks and enjoyed both visits. My friends & I went for the Wild Rock Pinot Noir which was great and the food we ordered was lovely (we shared a platter and I ordered a truffle risotto). I thought the service was more than decent; they recommended the wine and looked well after us. We met the manager too, a very friendly French guy… Only drawback is that it was too cold to enjoy their terrasse, too bad! This place as a real home feel to it,loved it.

Third visit--still solid. Had a decent malbec for around RMB135. hey do have problems keeping wine on the menu in stock though. On both recent visits, I've had to wade down to third or fourth choice to find something they actually could sell me. On this trip I also had food--some sort of penne pasta with chorizo sausage, red sauce and topped with diced spinach (RMB48). It's average stuff you could make at home and only 3-4 slices of sausage. For what you get, it's overpriced. All that being what it is, the ambiance is really nice, the owners are very friendly, they have a knowledgeable PR guy who can recommend wines you'll like and the seating is comfy. Since it is now almost impossible to get a seat at DR Wine, this is my default option.

As my family and I walk by this place on a daily basis we decided to give it a try and ate there today for an early dinner. The inside is warm and inviting and the manager is friendly with good drink/dinner suggestions. Based on his suggestion, I had a lovely glass of the house red wine - it was smooth but not sweet just what the doctor ordered. We (including our 5 year old daughter) had some yummy starters - hummus with veggies and bread. The carrots looked like they had just been picked and peeled, my daughter loved eating like a real rabbit and the hummus was very tasty. My husband had the pumpkin soup and caesar salad. I tasted both and the soup was superb! For main course, I had the fusilli pasta with sausage, my daughter had the Shepherd's pie and my husband had the blue cheese burger. Everything was fresh, hot and flavorful. Well worth the price - we'll be back for sure!
