This is vast nightclub is billed as the biggest venue in Shanghai. Dancing girls, KTV, stages, and bars spill across numerous floors, all suitably clad in faux marble and dripping with chandeliers. A little part of Vegas has come to Shanghai and landed, improbably, in Gubei. Come check out clubbing on a truly Chinese scale.

What a bad club. The lighting is turned on too high and the entire space just feels cavernously empty. Every time I've been to the club, it's been mostly devoid of people. I imagine it'd be fun if they held huge events like inviting an international set of dj's and spinning all night, a la Ultra in Miami. However, up until now, it's been mostly disappointing.

LLOOVVEEDD IT!!!! I typically don't review but since only one person has put their 2 cents in, I figure I'll throw mine in too. Laoshanghaiexpat is being way harsh in his review. I won't try to address all his points because I pretty much disagree with all of them. I've been to Obama twice and both times I had a wicked time. I walked in and felt like I'd warped onto the Vegas strip. I loved that part about it! It's by far the most unique club in Shanghai. I think that this place is going to put on some massive events and has scheduled some sick ass DJs! So what do I say? I say, GO! You will have a righteous time!

Dear sir we read your comment with lots of interest, and we are here to make things better in order to make you feel comfortable and have a real good time at our venue, even though we disagree with you on several elements, some points are very relevant and your opinion is quite important to us, we will do everything possible to improve the service and make everyone happy.

having been a nightlife enthusiast in shanghai for over a decade, i was looking forward to a new superclub. but what a disappointment!! the club is somewhere in between an ultra-expensive KTV upstairs (with a small number of mediocre hostesses) and a medium sized club downstairs (sporting the sad, rejected hostesses). it is not really a brothel, yet a bit too sleezy to bring girlfriends or anyone unaccustomed to seeing professional women lounging around in large numbers and solicitying business. and no, the girls are not attractive at all, especially the dancing performers. since it is neither here nor there, you are better off going to a KTV (where there will be more girls) or a proper banging club like M2/Ritchy/Babyface. The decor is over the top las vegas gaudy but a obviously budget chinese version. The LED panels, which are the main wall decoration, have the same resolution as airport flight display panels from the early 90's. The music is extremely, extremely loud (much louder than the old M2) and generally uninteresting. On the few nights i went, the 10-20% occupancy of the club probably put off the international DJs completely from playing anything but their pre-mixed CDs. The worst part of all is the appaling and rude service. The head manager was clearly interested only in servicing the 3 VIP tables and it was just tough love or tough luck for everyone else (no matter how many bottles you opened). This is really appaling since the club is also very expensive. I am not sure this place will last long given its bad location, mediocre offering, poor service and high prices. The customer is more or less paying for the ridiculous decoration and the paid customers (the hostesses) to make the club look full. save yourself the trip and the money and stick to mint/bar rouge scene, one of the local clubs like M2/G+/Ritchy or just going to a KTV.

It’s as if a spoonful of the Vegas strip had dolloped itself down in Gubei. Obama Club is huge, gaudy and proud of it. Tables ring a vast domed space while upstairs KTV rooms stand behind intimidating wooden doors. The sound system is good and the dancefloor is huge, both plus points, though whether the cavernous space will ever feel full is another matter. At present, it’s worth the trip to see Chinese nightlife dialled up to 11, but the music and the atmosphere are disappointingly familiar. ■ NT Issue 11, June 3-16
