This venue is the club of choice in China's second- and third-tier cities, and they have finally come to Shanghai to do it up waidi style. Expect tables full of patrons drinking bottles of whisky with green tea, dancing girls, suits and rattling dice, but all done in such an over-the-top way that your jaw will be on the floor. The Jules Verne-style interior and wild live performances are also gobsmacking.

88 is everything I love about Shanghai. It's loud, it's obnoxious, it's over the top and gaudy and filled with smoke and the rattling of dice and the clinking of whiskey and green tea and crazy loud bass. It's too many strangers and drunk foreigners having an epic time on a Tuesday night. It's undressed couture women, young guys with their parents money and lip synced stage performances. It's perfect for getting neon in your blood and fire back in your eyes. In fact, if it weren't for places like 88 and Rich Baby this city were just be another cliche filled with warehouse clubs like M2 and Bar Rouge. Thank you 88.

This is one of my favorite clubs if not my MOST favorite. It's usually a decent mix between foreigners and locals but usually more heavily leaning towards the locals. Music is always good and they usually have brief live performances. Drinks are not cheap but wouldn't say they are realy expensive neither. Overall a nice atmosphere and good experience.

One of my favorite bar, not crowded with foreigners, some cool Chinese mafiosi and serving a VERY strong whisky and coke
I was last night in for the fist and last day this bar, I can about midnight to this bar a little bit drunk already. I gave my coat to the front desk to get in, in the bar I wait about 30 min to get the dirnk because staff was very stressful with gambling. That was ok after I gave some Tip the take care me very good I spend about 1500 RMB I just was angry, I was talking with a girl after I find out she want to have sex for money, my friend told me in this bar only good customer. After I went to the exit want to pick up my Coat but the security refuse to give it to me. because I made a mistake with my cell number on the paper, I explain I drunk that I was making that mistake, but the don't care, I ask for the Manager, they still don't care. I just get addition to get loud and hit them with my things what I had left, and show to them to get my Coat back because my House Key inside. Ad home I see my Cigar lighter was lost and my golden Ferrari pen a present from my friend from the formula one Team. I really pissed off about that Nr. one bar in Shanghai.
This is a more traditional than contemporary club. Drinks are mediocre, but the place is usuallt packed. The dance floor isn't , however until after 1am. The music is the best I've heard out of all the (about 10) clubs I visited during my vacation this summer. It makes you not want to stop, and unfortunatly the venus lacks chairs/seating at the bar or for little tables. Great place to dance, but prepare to not rest once the music starts.

ugly club with too many people smoking. it's like walking into an opium den. blegh

Bar really nice, the staff is pleasant, especially at the bar, Arlene i like you! they offer a show of juggling flaming bottles really amazing, the bartenders are there to set the mood not only prepare cocktails, music is not very original but the idea is to set the mood with tubes known and well mixed. Guests will appreciate, especially on Saturday night, shows of dancers or singers live. Count 55 rmb for a cocktail and 50 for a beer, alcohol is good. Only drawback, after midnight, the place is really crowded and therefore a victim of its success. A really friendly place more popular than some place frica.
very very local-for shanghainese or chinese from different cities. It is so crowded out there. Music is good but the dancing place is really narrow and limited, when get on the stage, you could harldly stretch your moves. But fun to have some tequila shot and went crazy....Foreigners are few. People who likes mint or park 97, might not like this place though...

Very local, good drinks, loud music. Ideal for offering a true Chinese clubbing experience to foreign friends visiting you. Could get very busy and crowded.

Not as posh and cold as places like M2 or G+, you can call it cheesy or tacky, but it does draw in the hordes and pretty much packed every night. One night, I was taking an ozzie friend out in town, and we were hanging out in the Forbidden City KTV, he just laid low and seemed unimpressed, but then 88 just flashed by in my mind and we headed there, and boy, he came back to life and wouldn't leave and head back to the hotel! So i guess that it caters well to the foreign clientele as well as the locos!
P.S. Note bene the sign up and about the place that reads "Foreign liquor, false the one tenfold reimbursement". Luckily I'm Chinese, and if it was a Johnny foreigner, just wouldn't have an idea on what the heck it's rambling on out.

We had a blast there last night. Cool crowd, good drinks, nice music. Located at a nice location, where we found food as well. Love the decorations as well. Good job!
Gawdy is right, but somehow they pull it off! The live singers are ridiculously good. They do renditions of old favorites from the 60s to the 90s, with attitude!
Was fun the one time I was there (maybe our 4 bottles helped a bit), but it's one of those places where too much of a good thing...

i dont like place, very pretending and people here dressing fake and more of a vanity side reflection.

strange decor, kind of gawdy. this place is high end local joint. be sure to bring your own party as mingling is tough to do. i do like the mix of hip hop music though as it seems fresh not like the other more popular venues in town which seem like they play a CD every week. watch out for the dancing garfield...hahahah.

i want to book a table at 88. how can i do that?!? my mail is zoster21@hotmail.com
please contact me! i need somebody who speaks in english! thank you

This is one of the most godawful clubs I have ever been to in my entire life. It is the epitome of everything I dislike about clubbing Chinese style - vacant-eyed girls, jugs of Chivas and whisky with green tea, dreadful music, dice games... The only redeeming feature is the quirky decor.

This place is great, so extravagant. I did get my tie caught up in one of the fans and gave my myself a nasty circular scar on my face, then set my shirt sleeve on fire with a sparkler, but I'm going back for more!

Hop into No. 88 and your eyes won’t know what to focus on: The gaudy chandeliers dangling above, red throne-like velvet couches, or the Western saloon decor glowing under a rainbow of neon lights. Then, there are the people. No. 88 bustles with patrons gleefully playing dice and sipping on Jack Daniel’s, bar staff sporting plaid overalls and singers belting out tunes from all corners of the bar. All this makes for one unforgettable night.
In one word ridiculous. If you want an authentic Chinese clubbing experience there’s nowhere else (except perhaps Richbaby though 88 does it better). M1NT, all the Muses you can find in any city. Gaudy chandeliers, juggling bartenders, waiters that will happily join conga lines, stages for exhibitionists like myself, crude but fun mash ups (though there is one DJ on the decks currently whom I despise for his insistence on poor house music instead of the usual) and you get the insanely tacky charm of 88. If you go out to people-watch and pose you’ll hate it. But if you want to dance not sit on a table, it’s the only place in Shanghai that is consistently a great time on both weekends and weekdays. If you go nowhere else in Shanghai, come here.
