Backed by the people from Soma records, this large live space is the best place to hear rock music in Shanghai. A spanking sound system and relatively cheap drinks combine with a cool crowd of Chinese kids and cutting edge live acts.

I have been there only a few times as I am just getting into the live scene also. With the exception of prices of a few things it is quite a good night out! The place is big and the design has changed so much for the better since the former Candy bar was there. Love it!
I've been living in Shanghai for over 3 years now... have done the club thing, house party thing, stomach destroying street food, and pretty shishi places. But, for the past lately I've been getting into the live music scene here. It's different, inspiring, educational, cultural, and fun. And MAO is THE place that hosts THE shows. It's AWESOME. Highly recommend it!
Backed by the people from Soma records, this large live space aims to put on the best bands that come to China. It's still being renovated, but will open Sept. 28 (all being well) with a show by My Little Airport.
