City Weekend says

This used to be The Hut, which was one of the diveyest bars in town (in a good, though shabby way). New management have tarted the space up a bit, but the drinks menu is still reasonably priced. It's a good, inexpensive spot if you live in the area, but bring a crowd of friends because it doesn't get much passing trade.

Contributor Description

The Chalet is Shanghai's cozy outpost for those seeking a laidback, warm atmosphere in a chic, low key setting. One of Shanghai's best happy hours, and a Swiss lodge degsin, make for a Shanghai classic.

[HTML_REMOVED]Chalet's Chicken Rules the Roost[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Posted on Jul 06 2010[HTML_REMOVED]

This city has its fair share of fine dining snobs, the type that likes to be critical of the finest restaurants in town just to be contrary. But it’s World Cup season, and bar food is as popular now as it has ever been. Shanghai sports fans’ stomachs have shown incredible resiliency over the years, but that doesn’t mean they should continue to settle for the same sloppy, artery-clogging fare they’ve been scarfing down. Enter The Chalet. The homey bar has a large screen, good drinks and a simply solid, reasonably-priced American bar food menu that tops out at a relatively meagre ¥55 for the Chalet burger. The menu gets its pedigree from Dennis Ni, KABB’s former restaurant manager, and the work he’s put in shows. The menu items have flavor without being overly greasy, but our favorite is the chicken strips (¥45). Unlike the thin, over-breaded, over-fried options you’ll find at most places, The Chalet’s are thick, meaty and hand-breaded to just the right proportion. They come out golden brown and piping hot. Piled generously high in a basket and served with a tangy plum sauce, these savory strips are a great answer for late-night munchies and a complement to World Cup beers.

One of my favorite bars in Shanghai. Denis is super-friendly, all around awesome. I love their couscous salad, which has tons of cucumbers and tomatoes and really good flavor. Their quesadillas and chicken strips are also some of the best in Shanghai. Cheap drinks, congenial atmosphere, movie nights...what's not to love?

In an urban desert of mediocrity in terms of truly decent Shanghai bars/pubs, the Chalet is a rare gem in an oasis. How may bars do you actually know who the manager is? In how many bars does the manager actually come up and greet you (and remember your name when you come back). Dennis is the only genuine “mine host” in Shanghai – always friendly always attentive, always ready to just chat - with a true welcome for anyone who enters. His small complement of well trained staff are equally welcoming.

The drinks are reasonable in price with a permanent happy hour from 15:00 – 21:00. Dennis also takes great pride in his wine.

The food menu is short, but varied, well constructed and truly excellent in quality – and very well priced. Something for everyone, including vegetarians. On a cold winter evening, try the beef stew…..

The customers are generally up-market professional crowd. Typically 70% expatriate and 30% Chinese.

This is the closest Shanghai has to a “bistro pub”. I can say after many years associated with the hospitality industry – the CHALET is seriously good…………..

I had a great time over some wine the other night there, they were cool enough to let me charge my iphone and I got to use the free -wifi over 20 rmb glasses of red. Nobody was really in the bar but it still had a nice feel to it, will go back

A nice, cozy bar to hang out at on a week day. The atmosphere and music are great, not to mention the large comfy couch to lounge in. Dennis is also one of the nicest people I've ever met. He always makes sure that everyone is having a good time. We've heard a lot about the chicken strips there and got it a couple times. Compared to truly great chicken strips (Popeyes Louisiana strips), these still have a long way to go. They are definitely crispy and well fried, however the strips were a bit too doughy and the strips were not as tender as i had expected.

Overall, one of my top choices for late night hang out and chilling.

Love this place. Get to know Dennis, the owner; he'll treat you right. Try the chicken strips too--they're the best in town.

The owner is a great guy and brought a lot of experience from the bars he worked before. The place is comfortable; Western food better than average and the daily! happy hour till 9 pm when all standard drinks are 20 Rmb, makes it imo one of the best bars in the Concession. (although The Hut was great as well :)

A great bar to get a drink and have a conversation. Drinks are reasonably priced and atmosphere leads to hours flying by. The owner/manager is great, buying the table i was with shot after shot. Definitely be back. Frank
