This bar does almost everything right for the sports fan. Multiple huge TVs showing whatever game you ask, each with its own sound system, so different areas of the bar can enjoy different sports. Decent pub food and a happy hour that sees pints of Carlsberg for RMB25.
- Contributor Description
The Camel bar was born from a conversation amongst friends about there not being a place in Shanghai to watch our favorite sports in a setting which made us feel at home. From that day we worked together until on 26th February 2010 - The Camel was born.
It is a place where you can sit with a beer and watch the world go by, or snuggle up on the sofas by the fireplace with a warm Irish Coffee or watch your favorite team battle on the sports field.
The Camel bar is a great place to have a drink with your mates and to watch all the live sports from all around the world.
From the buzz at Lords, to the parochial songs of the Millennium Stadium, to the roar of the crowd at Wembley to the frenzy that is the MCG on Grand Final Day. This is what the Camel Sports Bar tries to capture, the special moment that even though you were not there you feel like you were.
Come on down to the Camel, no need to grab a ticket, we have your seat waiting for you

Need to pay the food bill before being served any food, in an empty venue? Staff eating behind the counter and having more attention for eachother than for their customers... Waiters attitudes are getting worse and management obvious needs to be IN the place 24/7.

@rumpus
Nope, no it isn't. The place I went to was definitely the camel, I spoke to the bassist as he used to be a regular there until he moved.

That's Beaver not the camel

The Camel is that little dive on the corner, right? Couple of pool tables in the middle of the place?
Can't say took to it: the rest of the band dragged me there a while ago, full of hookers angling for a free drink and a few paid promoters for certain beer brands.
They kept trying to push this one beer...can't for the life of me remember...maybe Tetley's?
The staff were fairly friendly, just didn't like the speed at which glasses were cleared and the way that the staff were hovering around us the whole time.

Camel's Staff's attitude is declining; especially the guys behind the bar need some severe attention how to behave towards their clients. The girls 'on the floor are losing it either....I have seen this happen in Shanghai so often. Many staff memebers lost their smiles and seem to be annoyed. Unacceptable.
Camel started as a great bar, but Management needs to put attention in the behaviour of their staff. Money flows in too easy?

Order the fish and chips 3 of them come the other one we ask the staff 2 times where it is on the third time they say they have run out after waiting over 45mins this is not good enough, no apology or anything, the pizza is complete crap i cant believe they can even call it pizza. The bar stools must of been bought at the $2 shop seriously uncomfortable and the seat is tiny.

Lovely service but the only reason I actually come here is for one thing only - fish & chips.
All the other food is just average IMHO, but their fish & chips are the best in Shanghai. Long fingers of tender white fish dunked in beer batter and deep fried, resulting in a crispy light batter encasing white fish. There's a satisfying crunch when you bite in and the 2 long fingers + fries will have you sufficiently full.
One tip: I ask for "no mushy peas", because they're quite disgusting and come laughably in a teeny little sauce half the size of my palm. Instead, I ask for a pot of their gravy, which I douse over my fries. Absolutely fantastic! :)

dissapointing, food was not as good in real life as it sounded on paper, the manager spent more time with his gf rather than chatting or checking on customers, music was the best thing there and the clean toilets

Tries to watch a soccer match there tonight. Good staff and an ok 100 rmb/3 drinks at the door to enter, food is quite ok. BUT: FOR A SPORTS BAR THE QUALITY OF THE BROADCASTING IS STILL DAMN LOUSY. ALL SCREENS HAVE TROUBLES, tv/big screens, WHICH MAKES IT LESS FUN. there are plenty of places at Hengshan Lu, where without any payment better quality is offered. They need to change this as they want to a sports bar profile. This is messy.

The perfect place to watch sports, my only complaint of late is that it is too popular. A little bit crowded for my taste, but, I presume that this is the world cup phenomenon and will become less sardine like after the competition.
Also, for the World Cup and football in general, I think that English TV sports commentary is better than Australian (but I’m from the UK so I guess biased).
Food: decent pub fare at decent prices. My recommendation is the “All Day Breakfast Roll”, a huge monster stuffed with eggs, bacon and sausage. I was hungry but could not finish it off.
Drinks: a good selection at reasonable prices.
nice place, very spacious, I like the big long window open on the street, space between tables.
I agree with others comment it will be great for the world cup.
I tried the hamburger yesterday, it was good but the meat could have been a little bit more tasty (less cook) and fries of better quality. so the was quantity fine but quality was average. For the rest I would say that Price seems to be in the average of a Shanghai expat bar.

A long time patron of the British Bulldog my allegiance is changing to the Camel. The Camel is extremely clean and orderly. Happy hour drink deals are pretty good. Should be an excellent place to watch the World Cup. The only downer is it's very much a laowai's bar with few locals frequenting. A little diversity could really make this place an even more enjoyable experience. Overall, I'm becoming a fan!

What I love about Camel is even though it is a sports bar it is not a sheman's women haters club! As a female and NRL supporter I am very comfortable sitting in the Camel to watch a game or catch up with my girlfriends. Even though there are many beers on tap the house wine is decent (red from South Africa) and the cocktails are great! Frozen Margarita's and more cocktails plus the house wines only 25RMB during happy hour! They have my female thumbs up!!!

I've been to the camel a few times & its quickly becoming my go to in Shanghai. I was there watching the Knight riders on a Tuesday night & the place was rammed. Great beer, people & food will keep the camel treking in shanghai for a long time to come. 2 Humps!

I tried this place cause a mate told me they had live Aussie sport and i was not dissapointed!! They had a large TV everywhere i looked and were showing live AFL and NRL games which as an Aussie is the one thing i miss living in Shanghai.
I tried the burger and must say that it was great!
Later in the night the bar filled up with a large crowd of English EPL supporters and to see so many people cheering for Chelsea really made an impression. This place is really going to be the place to be for the World Cup.
Definately the new home of sport for the Shanghai bar scene!!

I went to the Camel for the F1 on the weekend and must say that this place has to be the best place in China to watch live sport.
Apart from the F1, I was blessed to see live AFL and NRL which I have not seen before in Asia.
The picture quality and sound was good and overall with the crowd that was there at the time made for a great atmosphere to enjoy the games!
I tried the Burger which was solid and a friend had the fish and chips which he said was the best he had tasted in Asia!!
I will definately be making this my place to watch live sport in Shanghai.

The place is nice and besides good drinks nice western food, and kind well mannered staffI I like the atmosphere; it's not like close by o'malleys where the old grumpy manager looks likes he wants to kick you out, or Oscar's where at 7 pm everybody seems to be drunk and shouting.
Camel seems to attract a different and younger crowd, BUT: their TV satelite system sucks. Despite the place is loaded with screens it seems impossible to watch some different games in one room and the quality of broadcasting is below average. A pity!

Been a few times and the vibe is good with a mixture of guys and ladies both western and local and seem to be a younger crowd. The management all appear to be quite young. It is a good place for a drink and a meal but even a better place to watch sport.
This place is seriously big and has more big screens than I could count. I was there for the 6 nations and it was crowded but I could easily see the game from wherever I was. This place will be brilliant for the World Cup.
The food is standard pub food but pretty solid and the fish & chips were exceptionally good. The drink prices are on par with most places but did notice the Guinness was 60 rumbahs which isn't bad.
The only point that really needs to fix up is the lighting. Really bright on the first time I was there and has gotten better but still needs to come a tad.
Overall I can say I have added this place along with many other of the rugby boys to our places to go.

based on the desicription of camel bar i was expecting a nice place with "huge" screens of sports. who did they pay to write that? losing my trust in reviewers now. the irritating pub quiz noise was unacceptable. the food i had was terrible. it gets my vote for the absolute worst pizza i have ever had in my life even worse than my uni roommates homemade mini pizzas.
