This is one of the best Japanese-style bars in town. It's hard to find but worth the effort. If you're a fan of shochu, a distilled Japanese spirit, you will be in heaven as the Kumamoto-bred owner serves you from shelves filled with a cornucopia of bottles and jars. Sit at the bar or on the tatami mats in the private rooms.

Always a bit of an adventure finding this place, but it is definitely worth it. It's got a very relaxed vibe and the people behind the bar are always very nice and accommodating, even when the place fills up. Great bar away from the usual crowds and loud music.

Last time I went by here, it was closed. Are they remodeling? moving? I remember it normally being pretty busy. Anyone know if they are back?

the marmalade is a bit sweet - the lime oh so refreshing!

I stumbled across Mokkos while walking around my neighbourhood one night, and can't believe that I'd never seen/heard of it before.
From the outside it's blink-and-you'll-miss-it; indoors it's equally low-key with soft reggae music, adorably quirky waitresses, and a huge selection of shochu and some Japanese beers. It's tiny, and has a real feeling of backstreet Tokyo. It's usually busy, crammed with cool-looking Japanese guys and their impossibly hip girlfriends who look like they're either DJs or graphic designers - possibly both.
Highly recommended - a nice change from the bling overkill / fat Yank sports bars that clog the Shanghai bar scene.

Well, I went there after the recommendation from City Weekend and I felt something of a mixture of disappointment and delight.
The service was great - I initially started nattering to the waitstaff in Chinese, not realising they were Japanese, but they fluently moved between Japanese, Chinese and English when there were any difficulties, which is a fantastic surprise.
The owner was attentive, giving us different bottles to smell before we settled on a flavour. She also kindly added soda and lemon to a drink that was far too strong. The music was a good mix of familiar and unfamiliar reggae, it didn't seem to fit so well with the decorations until a few drinks went down! The place is small, so get in early otherwise you'll be up other people's bums come 10pm.
BUT: as there was no price list, we pretty much headed into uncharted waters when we bought the drinks, the owner gave us a vague notion that the prices were 25RMB for everything, so we ploughed ahead. Then came settling up time, we were shocked that the bill was 170RMB for 4 very small glasses and a "handful" (their words, not mine) of noticeably mouldering peanuts.
To cap it all, the waitress was unwilling to give the 30RMB change for the 200RMB we handed to her, so we walked out paying two big pinks for four small drinks... not good.
If it weren't for the nasty shock when we came to pay the bill, this place would have been a solid 4, as it is, it gets 2 and a warning to make sure you check the prices ahead.

向欧洲人便宜,向别的国家贵,菜单没有,所以,,,星三个!
By far the best bar in town, this is a rare gem that's hard to find, but well worth the hunt.

Mokkos Bar - Wuding Xi Lu Sneak down a dimly lit lane and through a bamboo screen to find this tiny Japanese gem among Wuding Xi Lu's increasingly fine selection of bars. Beers are on offer from RMB30, but the reason to go is the shochu (焼酒), a distilled Japanese spirit made from rice, sweet potato or barley (from RMB40). Hundreds are on offer, served by warbling staff over hand-shaped ice.

I love the decor and laid-back atmosphere ! Staff is very friendly there and they'll wisely guide you through the menu if you know nothing about Japanese drinks. Even if it's hard to find for 1st timers, it's always full, so make sure you have a plan B if you bring your group of friends there.

Damn what a cool little place. Very nice waitstaff (though she was quite drunk by 12 when we showed up) which helped some friends and I pick out a good little bottle. Friendly people and..... reggae music (don't quite get how it fits in but oh well) This place will become a standard watering hole for me.

25 kuai for a soju & grapefruit?!
might be the best deal in town.
how many people are in love with the bartender who sings/chants in ($5, collin), tibetan?

Issue 10: Where You Drink, Robert Zsolnay
"Checking out Shanghai bars for research reasons is always a good excuse to become a regular in some of them. Currently living in and writing a book on Shanghai, I look for inspiration in many places around me. If I'm seeking a good drink to go along with my "inspiration," I head off to Hamilton House (French) where I like the design. Sitting at the bar, most likely with a gin and tonic, overlooking the big space is always great. The next stop is JW Lounge on the 40th floor of the Tomorrow Square building. It has got one of the best views in Shanghai. Drinks are mixed with an eye for detail and watching the bartender is especially entertaining. Later that night I might go to Mokkos, a great Japanese bar with a fantastic laid back feel. Being a regular here, the owner already welcomes me with my favorite drink–a potato sochu–and it does not take a long time to meet other new and interesting regulars in this homey bar."

My new favourite bar. Tucked away on a little side street and with only a few subtle clues to its location, you really feel like you're discovering something special when you come in to Mokkos - and you are.
Stylishly designed and with some of the nicest/coolest staff in town - they'll happily talk you through their Sho Chu collection and always make good recommendations - this is the perfect chill out bar. They also play some really good music here. I'm not usually a fan of reggae at all but the stuff they play here is brilliant, and it is at the right volume.
Great drinks, great people, great atmosphere - i can't recommend it highly enough.

Darkly lit, nice wood finish, hard to find, well designed, good beer/booze salt snacks, friendly service, good prices... I could go on. When you're in the mood for laid back bar with a different vibe, I'd recommend Mokko. My list is growing strong in Shanghai... Constellation, Mokko, ...
Hidden behind a heavy wooden door down a lane this bar is a treasure trove of sochu. For those a little behind on their Japanese alcohols, while everyone’s favourite drink sake is brewed, this Japanese alcohol is distilled. The long wooden bar shelves at this sochu haven are mainly filled with bottles of otsurui (sochu distilled once versus several times) in all shapes and sizes. The menu, only in Japanese and Chinese, lists the base ingredient: rice, sweet potato, wheat. Otsurui (RMB25-55) is best drunk neat or on the rocks. There are also a number of chuhai (RMB25) where the sochu is mixed with flavours such as lemon or grapefruit juice, or a Japanese plum (ume). Run by a naitive from Kyushu, the minimalist grey walls, fluted red light shades and wooden panelling surround a small tatami mat seating area and a few chairs and tables evoking a friendly local Japanese bar
