Officially licensed by Bavaria's world-famous Staatliches Hofbrauhaus, this gigantic German pub brews top-notch lagers, dunkels, wheat beers and seasonal specialties. If you work up an appetite drinking, the menu offers a solid selection of standard German fare–everything from sausages and pretzels to strudels.
- Contributor Description
Although easy to assume this is yet another trendy brewery in Shanghai, this three-story bar in Pudong is licensed by the famous Staatliches Hofbrauhaus giving it a few more bragging rights than some of the more run-of-the-mill breweries that have sprung up recently. The beer and service give you good value for your money and a reason to make the trek across the river.

Forgot to mention: the Chinese staff still needs a lot of training - if it weren't for the Philippine support we wouldn't even have made it thru the first visit!!!

With that name and history of it's Munich name sake, it has quite a reputation to live up to! Decent start with the live music, although people might have come to expect a bit more lively music in a "German Beer Hall" from the Paulaners in town. I wonder if the audience will ever come to appreciate and the management will stick to this low-key but original duet. First of course there has to be an audience. I went twice, once on Thursday (two tables occupied) and once on Saturday (three or four tables). The beer is good, but would be better at a more affordable price (Paulaner league). The food is better than Paulaner and served in generous portions.
Hope this place will get some life to it - I can hardly wait for the spring&autumn season to try the outdoor seating.

Great beer and classic German food all served up by smiling waiters in lederhosen. What's not to love? I was a bit surprised to see such a vaunted name as Hofbrauhaus only offer four different varieties on tap, but soon realized they are going for quality, not quantity. I tried each distinct style and each one was excellent in its own right. It's a bit of a hike if you live west of the river, but well worth the hike if you are a beer enthusiast.

It was one of those Shanghai days when we found ourselves wearing a "better city, better life" tshirt watching dancing haibaos while listening to a children choir in Pudong. We needed a beer. Hofbraeu sounded good with their wonderful terrace by the little canal. At 9PM on a Friday the terrace was closed for no obvious reason. The beer is good, really good but not better than the Boxing Cat brews. The service is bad, really bad. Then again, I would not smile if I had to listen to the band. I thought I had listened to every bad band in Shanghai. I did not. All the songs you never wanted to listen to in the 80s, 90s and today with guests trying to sing Celine Dion. Who are you kidding? We did not stay for dinner. According to some German guys next to us the food is very good. I found it very pricey and I do not like to eat in places where they can not be bothered to clean the windows or the benches that you are sitting on. Call me fuzzy.
