The Peninsula is one of the Far East’s oldest hotel brands–the first Peninsula in Shanghai opened back in the ’30s. The luxury brand’s return has been beautifully pulled off, built from the ground up but designed to blend into the Bund’s surviving historic facades. Its Compass Bar serves drinks at the high-end of the scale (cocktails are all ¥90; wines from ¥95), and it does it with polish and flair.

My husband and I usually can't afford to go to bars at 5 star hotels, but occasionally it is nice. Last night we had a quite lovely drink late (around 11) at the Compass Bar. He had a Manhattan, I had a drink with Ketel One, orange juice, and lime juice (forget the name). Sitting outside was perfect, and I loved the olives and sweet cashews that were complimentary. Highly recommended.
