City Weekend says

This homey Yunnanese eatery aims to put out good, authentic fare at uber-affordable prices. They've got both spicy and non-spicy dishes and a selection of the many mushrooms that China's southwest province is known for. Bring your own wine–there's no corkage–or settle for some cheap bottled beer.

Contributor Description

Authentic Yunnan cuisine, many fresh flavours. Groups of 4 or more works out at a better price/more variety. Price guide: budget dinner for 2 around RMB100, 4 really hungry people putting the kitchen through its paces around RMB400. Fish soups, special mushroom dishes, good selection of spicy and non-spicy salads. Pork ribs Yunnan-style. Coming soon: Yunnan Feast, a glorious introduction to Yunnan cuisine for groups of 4 or more. Large beers from RMB12-18. Bring your own wine, no corkage, we'll focus on the food!

NOTE

From the 17th January onwards, for 4 weeks, Lotus will be serving rice noodle dishes only. This is to give the kitchen crew an extended holiday in Yunnan for Lunar New Year. By the time they get to Kunming and then onwards to the mountains, it would be time to make the return journey, which is no holiday at all! They deserve a break!

Yunnan | Lotus Eatery

If you’re after good, fresh Yunnanese food, check this place out. The small, bustling restaurant is decorated somewhat like a primary school project, but they are serious about representing the area with a menu that features Dai dishes and a page devoted to wild mushrooms. We started with a Dai black chicken salad (¥32), packed with tiny fresh peppers that almost blew our spice-loving heads off. After we washed it down with a couple of big bottles of Dali beer (¥16), we forged on with a tasty, deep-fried Miao barbecued fish (¥48), flavor-packed stewed aubergine (¥16), day-fresh beef liver mushrooms stir-fried with green peppers (¥60) and finished with a not-to-be-missed plate of “Grandma’s” homestyle chunky mashed potatoes (¥16).

A hidden gem of the Xinhua Rd. community. A back street eatery with quality and service. If you thought your only option for Yunnan cuisine was Lost Heaven, try this place. Popularity of this place has grown fast so fri and sat night reservations are almost a must.

I'm so happy my friend introduced me to this sweet little place. He studied in Kunming and vouches for its authenticity. I on the hand am just concerned about flavour & as a spice wuss also about whether the dishes can be made on the less spicy side. Happy to say that this restaurant gets flying marks in both areas. Bonuses: Bilingual menus, reasonable portions, agreeable prices and atmosphere...enough to make it a regular joint if I lived in the neighbourhood, and good enough to go out of your way once in a while. Highly recommended.

Go, Go, Go! In three words I summed it up. Most restaurants do a few dishes well but I've never ordered something here that wasn't amazing. When you do go don't forget to try the fried goat cheese, Amazing!
