City Weekend says

This new destination for spice heads features fiery Northern Yunnan dishes, including many Dai minority specialties. Try the succulent shrimp cooked xishuangbanna style, fresh cucumber with Dali-style pastry, and spicy beef in lettuce wraps. The staff of Yunnan natives even blend the house tea themselves.

Disclaimer: I worker here part-time as a waiter in 2009-2010 in order to help with my chinese so I may be somewhat biased.

I have living outside of China for almost a year now, and I miss this food on an almost daily basis. Tang De Chou is one heck of a chef and the staff are some of the nicest people you could ever meet. After seeing the comments Id say make sure to tell them you want it ``Yunnan Spicybut be warned, it WILL be spicy (oh man, I m starting to think of the spicy pork in between banana leaves). Try it sometime and tell themDa Xiong`sent you!

PS-They always have a couple of beers in the back that they keep extra cold for the foreigners...make sure to get one of those while your relaxing on the patio, letting the cool breeze just wash over you after a sweltering day....damn, I miss that place :)

We enjoyed a recent meal here, but I am not convinced this is the real deal for Yunnan food. The food is rather on the bland side, and we didn't see a single thing we recognized from Yunnan province (went there a few months ago and the food was great!) Must be a nice option if you live in the neighborhood, but not something to travel for.

Probably the best Yunnan food in Shanghai! The restaurant serves up flavorful Dai minority dishes. I love the pineapple rice, the Grandma's Mashed Potatoes, and some of the Yunnan meat dishes (ground meat) towards the back of the menu that have a wonderful taste and plenty of lemongrass flavor. The decor is kitschy but the service is friendly and the atmosphere is cozy.

I'm still fully satisfied with Legend Taste. I have my go to dishes but have been venturing off trying others and all have been great; Spicy sour noodles, explosion flavor vegetable, cold tofu with eggplant. I often take groups of employees or friends, order many dishes and feast; everyone always loves the food.

Nice atmosphere and a great crispy "bing" with some sort of interesting herby lemongrass flavour are what I remember - that bing has been difficult to forget

After hearing a lot of negative things about Lost Heaven I was happy to find this place - the food was all very good - not a bad plate set down before us. Sat outside so can't say much for the indoor atmosphere. Highly recommended for more gourmet style Yunnan food - especially if looking for a break from Southern Barbarian.

I adore this place. Have been there quite often recently and never got disappointed. The food is great and the prices reasonable, though not cheap. A dish that you must try is the Hani style sauteed chicken. Enjoy!

Food is similar to Lost Heaven at half the price. If weather is good and you can sit outside it is very nice, the interior is not so great. Recently felt ripped off when going to Lost Heaven on the Bund (that is not really on the Bund and not accepting credit card) I will only frequent this place when a craving for Yunnan food arises.

Very good food. I go here often as it is close to my office and home, and have yet to be disappointed. When they 1st opened the food was much more spicy, so I too say you should ask for your good "spicy"

Having spent a good 2 hours mastering the art of burlesque at Blush, our appetites were obviously worked up after the lesson and we were hungrier than a pack of wolves.

We've never been to Kangding Lu and kinda panicked that there won't be any eateries in sight. We decided to walk down the road and prayed very hard a restaurant would surface - somehow.

To our delight, we spotted a small little door with the words "Legend Taste" at the top. We walked straight in and managed to find an empty table (it was packed) in the corner. The service staff were quick to bring us the menus with a smile and without further a due, we ordered (helped that there were pictures for each dish!).

The 4 dishes that arrived within minutes of each other were unforgettable. Wow. Wow. Wow. We ordered jasmine flower omelette, morning glory fried in prawn paste, fish fillet in some genius of a sauce, and chicken stir fried in a Dai-inspired sauce. The 10 minutes of silence whilst we scoffed our faces was definitely one of the top 10 minutes of our lives.

The handpicked tea was free and being cheapos, we had that as our chosen beverage choice.

The total bill came up to less than RMB200 - very economical compared to Lost Heaven.

We are definitely going back and would recommend this to anyone who fancies a gastronomic Yunnan fare without, well, flying to Yunnan.

New Eats | Yunnan Delights

Yunnan chef Tang Dechao washed his hands of Lost Heaven and opened this restaurant. Though not a dating spot for former French Concession swells, this fine venue has more authentic Yunnan food than most places in town. The walls are mauve, the moss-woven lighting is subdued and the serenely conscientious staff makes every visit a pleasure. The spotlight, however, stays glued to the food.

Starters tip towards unexpected pairings and sweetness: freshly squeezed lemon juice and honey are sprinkled over fresh cucumber slices (¥18); a mound of sugar crystals is served with a fascinatingly airy and sour Dali-style pastry (¥26); a dish of simple Naxi-style buckwheat cakes (¥26); comes with more of the delicious honey. On the savory side, a dish of pickled eggplant with tofu is sharp and leaves the mouth tingling from the combination of vinegar, mashed garlic and cilantro.

Among the main dishes, spicy fried beef filet with lettuce wraps (¥48) and Xuanwei-style stir-fried pork (¥46) both have an herbal quality which sets them apart from their northern brethren. But it's the shrimp dishes that make this venue worth the visit. Shrimp stewed Xishuangbanna style (¥68) come laden with plum tomatoes and bamboo shoots. The garlic-infused sourness accents an undercurrent of juicy, sweet shrimp flavor. Shrimp with lemongrass and bell peppers (¥68) weaves the intricate flavor of its tangy sauce into the core of these plump crustaceans. Shrimp braised with pu'er tea (¥88) are crunchy and satisfying, though the novelty and pleasure is mostly due to the addictive deep-fried shower of tea leaves. Last but not least, be sure to try their free house tea: they blend it themselves. Katya Knyazeva

Excellent restaurant, indeed, and very westernized, like most Yunnan places in town. With clean presentation amidst Peter Gabriel tunes, the food even feels a notch more wholesome. We had a smoky starter of tender douhua with marinated eggplant, hot and sour prawns with bell pepper, buckwheat cakes with honey, and chili-fried beef. Our waitress confessed she ate the last dish frequently when she was growing up (which seems to have been very recently).

I'd only suggest they get rid of their unwieldy porcelain flatware and heavy metal spoons in favor of smaller and more manageable tools.

Authentic, charming, flavorful food in a comfortable environment. The former head chef from Lost Heaven has struck out on his own and created a more flavorful vision of Yunnanese cuisine. Spicy dishes from the Dai ethnic minority dominate the menu, but it gets rounded out with hearty Northern Yunnan food, and a couple of gems from the Mountainous Northwest of the head Chef's home town. The dishes are well prepared, all the staff are Yunnanese (kitchen and front), and they do an excellent job of bringing exotic and fresh flavors to Shanghai. The only draw back is that they have started reducing the spiciness to better match Shanhainese tastes, so request spicy if you can take it (it's worth it).
