Despite the great reviews and reputation of it, the food here didn't impress me all that much at all. Everything was great, but nothing that stood out, and the price was not broke college student friendly.

SIMPLY THAI is SIMPLY THE BEST! For authentic Thai cuisine, mmm...it is the next best place to actually eating in Thailand itself (Thai cuisine is my favourite). At any of the restaurants' locations, they are all linked with consistently good quality food. I should know, having lived here since 2001. I love the Dong Ping Lu restaurant as it is cosy and the terrace is just the right size. Service, ambience are just right! My fave dish is the Pad Si Euw Kai.

The Live and Death of a great Thai restaurant. Simply Thai at Donping Lu is the typical sad story of successful restaurant business. When I cam to China 8 years ago, Simply Thai was one of the best Thai restaurants in Shanghai. Excellent décor, excellent service (very important) and above all great Thai food. Last night I went to the restaurant for the first time in a very long time. The service was inattentive, careless and very sloppy – we had to beg to get the drinks, finally all the beers were room temperature (its nice in mid summer to have cold beer, crazy me J) The décor, well, in fact it was the same as the one 8 years ago, but unfortunately it’s looking a bit rundown. Walls need to be repainted and cleaned, furniture needs to be fixed or replaced, etc….it just looks very ware down. A far cry from the clean and well managed place it used to be. And last but not least, the food; simply the menu has changed, now is an strange mixed of Chinese and Thai food, which I might presume makes Chinese and Thai food lovers equally unhappy, its neither good Chinese food, its neither good Thai cuisine. What happened? Most likely, and I really don’t know, Simply Thai at Donping Lu has been sold to some other management company at the height of success, and that’s all she wrote J . Simply, it is a very sad story and unfortunately a very typical one for restaurants in Shanghai.

I ate there tonight - and wish I had gone nextdoor to Di Shui Dong. A rundown: - mosquitos ate us alive. We were sitting upstairs, inside. did i mention that we were INSIDE with the air conditioning on? - took us 40 minutes to get our food and drinks. - they didn't deliver our rice. - took us 4 asks for the check - and finally, I had to grab a menu, calculate our total, and leave money on the table. As we walked down the street a few minutes later, a woman ran after us indicating that we only left 223RMB (for two, no alcohol), and it was 233 RMB. I looked at the bill and they had charged us for the missing rice. The fact that they would actually run after us for 10RMB after we waited so long to get the check and we were clearly unhappy with the experience made me laugh. And share my experience.

A lot of Thai restaurants have opened and closed and Simply Thai continues to do a good job on its food and service day in and day out. Had a great bottle of riesling and 4 dishes, all of which were eaten left wanting more. And you gotta love the 70 year old ayi opening the door and welcoming you into the restaurant, that was priceless!

Been in Shanghai over 5 yrs now - food at this joint isn't what I'd consider expensive. So would like to ask other readers what they really mean when they say expensive. At this chain, I usually pay around RMB 150 when I eat there....maybe RMB 200 to 250 with alcohol and wine (& lunch is deiniftely half of that with their lunch special). For a good night out in a nice restaurant with good food - this is a pretty average price in Shanghai. And I eat out alot so I know what is average when I say it.

Expensive is when i have to cough up RMB 500/head or more for a meal (achieved easily in lots of restaurants on the Bund and in 5star hotels). Sometimes I wonder what benchmarks all these contributors are using when they make their comments. Hey - I've been to sandwich and noodle cha canting type places and paid RMB 120 to 150 per person............so maybe some sort of benchmarking is required and we need compare apples to apples.

It's in China to sell Thai Food,of course the price will not be the same as Thailand.

actually, not as authentic as real Thai food, and it is more expensive than in Thailand if you really do the math.

mediocre, over-rated and over-priced! seriously. the only time i'd consider eating there again is when they do their 10rmb thingymajiggy.

Tried their set lunch for the first time last week. Garden s nice for sure, only mosquitos were going to kill me! But when I asked the waiter there, he provided me a bottle of anophelifuge spray, how considerable.

I ordered the RMB88 set, but it s little too big for my appetite. Food s nice and Lime Delight s def a delight!

The interior is very simple, the food not that great and way overpriced.

Our main course arrived before our starters did. When mentioning it, they took away the main dish and after 10min. brought the starter, followed directly with the main courses again (a bit colder now though). The spicy fish with sweet and sour sauce was fried way too long and very dry and salty.

Any question to the staff had to be asked at least three times before anything happend and the waiting time was very long too.

There are much better alternatives in town, both for service, ambiance and taste!

Mediocre and overpriced, making it popular with many Westerners. This is not what Thai food should be like. It'll do in a pinch, but there are better places in town.

Agreed. Never had a problem at Simply Thai. Not the most amazing food ever, but good. This chain has displays an attention to quality--one reason why they've been able to expand so effectively!

Just a little surprised that my experience at this restaurant is so different from adrienvicard above. Its one of my favourites in town - and comparing it to street food is a pretty far cry. I also actually like the decor. It's warm and cosy. and service always efficietn. Somehow - find it a little strange to see such an adverse comment when me and my friends like it. You must have strange tastes adrien - perhaps best you stick to street food.

Having just moved to Shanghai just 6 months ago, I have been trying many restaurants of different cuisines. I find this restaurant one of the most consistent and value for money places in town. The food is always delicious, service efficient and it’s always a comfort to know that I will get my expectations met when I dine here (unlike many of the others I’ve tried). As far as Thai food goes, it’s as good as any I’ve had in Thailand.

This restaurant should be named " SImply Joke", because it's digusting and i would prefer to eat all my life in the streets than go again in this horrible place. The dishes at 10 rmb were re warm, and the design of the restaurant is beeuuurrrkkk i am puking when i am thinking to it. Don't go there exept if you want to lose money and get some stomach pains.

I was there recently for afternoon tea and ordered the crab cake set. What the restaurant served was a frozen fish stick chopped into three pieces and deep-fried until unrecognizable.

It simply looked and tasted terrible. I called the server over and was just told: that's the way it is.

Not impressed and would not go back.

This is real "international" thai cusine. It is not the real deal but it tastes good. The prices are definitely for the expat crowd and the service is excellent. I always enjoy the food here.
