City Weekend says

This cozy, Thai-style house offers indoor or outdoor dining with lots of attention to Southeast Asian detail with soft lights, dark teak wood and a faint hint of incense. The spicy beef lettuce wraps sprinkled with fresh mint make a perfect starter for the shrimp Pad Thai and red curry chicken.

Perpetual Thai

Always popular with expats and locals alike, we were curious to see if this Thai staple still provides a pleasant and memorable dining experience. Oozing with ambiance, it certainly offers the perfect exotic setting for sampling some Thai cuisine. On our recent visit, we indulged our taste buds by sampling a selection of our favored dishes peppered with new additions from the extensive menu. A must, and a favorite, the spring rolls (RMB40) were light, crispy, not too greasy and tasty as always. An added appetizer of rice paper crab veggies (RMB55), replete with spicy peanut dipping sauce, was a bit too heavy on the lemongrass and stingy on the crab. We also tried a tangy papaya salad (RMB48) and an exceptional vegetable dish of watercress with shrimp paste (RMB38). The pad Thai (RMB60) was a bit too eggy--the latter overpowered the dish--but the piquant green curry (RMB60) and sizzling beef with pineapple (RMB68) were outstanding. Setting, service and reliable, consistent Thai fare is what entices us to return and allows this venue to remain a favorite. --Peggy Rosen

Cozy place, warm welcome, good food.

Service could be better though: we had to ask about 3 different people before someone would change the wind direction of the aircon. Just no-one seemed responsible, and kept serving other tables instead - until finally the manager turned up. It may seem like a detail but when you are hungry and cold for 10 mins, it matters. Also, in a restaurant with international prices, staff must know what is a campari-orange and should master basic English skills.

This is by far one of my most favorite restaurants in Shanghai! ...oh, and I am very picky. Food is excellent and so is the atmosphere. Never had a bad experience. You have to try it out.

If you think this place authentic Thai food then it's pretty obvious you've never been to Thailand or you've never had real Thai food. Spicy was not spicy enough, sour was not sour enough, sweet was not sweet enough... get my point? There are far too many other places you can go in Shanghai for authentic Thai food. Also, I made a reservation for 7 people 2 days in advance and they squeezed us into the corner to a table for 4 people.

Bad food, bad service. Never going back.

i had one of the worst experiences dining in my life here. Have been in asia for 7 years, but coconut paradise takes the cake. Condescending, insulting waiters, mediocre food, was overcharged, all orders were wrong, food came more than hour after we ordered it, drinks never came. The maitre d came out got up in my face after i politely told the waiter the bill looked like it was 100 kuai over what we had ordered. He talked down to me and my wife after we were accommodating with all the terrible service before. When this jerk finally gets the menu out and a calculator (seriously), theres a team of waiters crowding the table counting money, yes the menu prices were significantly lower than what we were charged...waiter acts like its our fault. will NEVER go back even though I live across the street and love thai food....really really terrible.

This Thai restaurant is a real nice one. The food is good, the big terrasse looks much better than on the pictures above (maybe, because it's now greener), the service is ok. A good place, if you like to have a Thai dinner - in particular, if you want to sit outside.

Been to Coconut Paradise a couple of times, even celebrated a birthday with some friends there. It has always been pleasant; nothing great, just mediocre but they had great decoration. Tonight, however, I went with a friend, extremely famished after a day's work and ordered an appetizer, pineapple rice and a steamed fish. My friend wanted the rice and I planned to have the fish with some plain rice. We were informed that the fish will take 20 minutes and I agreed. The pineapple rice and appetizer were served and we asked the waiter (thrice) for some chilli with fish sauce. It only showed up 15 minutes later, which by then the dishes had gone cold (we were seated outside). We continued waiting for the fish and 45 minutes later after ordering, the 'captain' informed me that they had ran out of the particular ingredient needed in that dish. I wondered why did it take 45 minutes for the kitchen to inform us and got no answers. The manager tried to pacify us by saying "I understand" and returned with a glutinous rice dessert (which was pointless as I do not eat glutinous rice). He also told us that there was a miscommunication and that they were very busy. This does not excuse any establishment for not informing the customer in advance about a dish that was not able to be served. I was waiting in hunger for 45 minutes to be told that there will have to be more waiting because of a miscommunication. Nothing else was done about the situation and I left the restaurant unhappy and hungry. Last visit ever.

The place is nicely decorated, exotic, cozy and relaxing. The place is almost always full for the dinner, very lively. I appreciate the Thai food from this place very much. We had a dinner (2pax) last week, ordered appetizer (chicken wrapped in pandan leaf), papaya salad, prawn curry and some vegetable dish for the main. They were delicious!! Price of the food is not bad either (compared to other Thai restaurants in town.) The waiter who was serving us was also very attentive. I have been to this place several times now and still remain my favorite Thai restaurant in town.

Second and last time I visited this place. While the decoration is fantastic, the food is mediocre and unimpressive. Curries are too watery and not very flavorful. Dishes were served far apart.

However, the worst experience was that we (2 pax) reserved a table for 20:00 and were seated at 21:20! WTF? Seriously, no free drink even offered while we waited.

I wanted to have a nice romantic Valentine's evening with my girlfriend and was a little skeptical about this place due to mixed reviews. I even went to check out the place in the afternoon and was a little disappointed that the place looked a little run down and was being cleaned (apparently they were getting ready for the weekend). When I decided to give this place a chance, I was amazed at the contrast in atmosphere. Beautiful venue, great food, amazing garden, and helpful staff. We have both lived in Thailand for a few years and definitely knew what to compare it to. We ordered the tom yam goong, green curry, 3-flavor fried fish, pineapple fried rice, and papaya salad. While they could've added a little more lemon to the papaya salad, the food as a whole was very delicious. A very romantic place for all you first or second-daters wanting to make a good impression. Ordered our food first, walked around, admired the garden for a few minutes, and the food was surprisingly being brought to us when we got back. Great place.

Romantic decor and slow service makes it the ultimate date place ! Food is fresh and tasty, with several levels of spiciness (good for faint-hearted) and generous portions. It looked pretty authentic to me. Don't be shy on the wines, they are good value for money, and grab her hand, dude ! It'll be worth your RMB 450 bill.

The only good thing I have to say about this place is the decor. Warm, cosy and definitely brings you images of Thailand - but like so many other restaurants in Shanghai.....its always substnace over matter. The food (which is why we go to a restaurant) is pretty appalling. Watered down curry, mushy and stale fish cake and soggy rice - total disappointment. The evening was saved somewhat by their desserts.

Where You Eat

Name: Lustia Putranto Profession: Marketing Manager

I'm perpetually on a quest for great food in whatever city I find myself to be in. Fortunately, this is not a difficult task in Shanghai. For a no-hassle lunch or dinner, I opt for Coconut Paradise for their savory Thai food and prompt, friendly service. Its charming and serene ambiance provides a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. A sucker for spicy food, I never pass up their fish cakes and green beef curry--extra spicy of course. Enoteca is one of my perennial favorites. With an extensive wine list and delectable food menu, it's the perfect place to wine, dine and enjoy the comfort of good company without breaking the bank. When it comes to indulgence, Jean-Georges is it. Similar to its New York counterpart, the decor is opulent and exquisite and the food is haute cuisine at its finest. I especially love the amuse bouche selection prior to my favorite entree--the sea bass.

Quality of the food is definitely not worth the money when you've been to Thailand and had REAL Thai food before. We specifically told the server we want our dishes less spicy and they said they'd tell the chef. Regardless dishes arrived really spicy and when we asked the server all they said was "It's Thai, it's SUPPOSED to be spicy". Their Thai ice tea doesn't taste very authentic either. The only good thing about that place is the decor, at night it looks pretty good even when it rained the night we went. All I saw there was foreigners taking their local lady friends there to eat, so I guess it's a better place to bring your date you want to impress than to really care about the quality of the food with your friends.

Service was classic Shanghai; 20 min. gaps between friends main dishes arriving. Thai Curry dishes were just so so, nothing special and not worth 65 RMB.

This was our first visit to Coconut Paradise and I'm sure that it will not be our last. As it was a Saturday we reserved a table, and had the choice of indoors or outdoors seating. We chose indoors and we were escorted to our table upstairs on the 2nd floor by a window. The lighting inside was subtle and tea-lights illuminated the stairway. The menu arrived promptly and drinks orders were taken and served quickly. Our appetiser took a little bit longer to come, but tasted freshly cooked and was hot on arrival. Our empty plates were cleared away efficiently, and our wine glasses topped up regularly, then we had another wait for the arrival of the main dishes and had to talk to each other and drink wine to pass the time (shock, horror!). When our dishes did arrive the food quality was good, the flavours spicy and the portions were generous. My favourite dishes were the 3 spices sea bass and the sizzling spicy beef, as both were pretty spicy the steamed rice was essential. The food prices are reasonable (most dishes were around 70rmb), and the wine prices are affordable at around 200 rmb. If you love spicy Thai food, enjoy dining in comfortable surroundings and don't mind waiting for your order to be cooked fresh, this restaurant is one for you to try.

I've been twice for dinner in the last month, food is on the spicy side so order a few different things to balance everything out. All the dishes I've had so far have been consistently good, the only problem has been the service. Second time we went service wasn't so good-very slow and it got a bit annoying after awhile. Nice old home, the atmosphere is nice which adds to the whole experience.
