City Weekend says

The Basque-inspired cuisine at this restaurant features a nightly buffet of tapas and a menu of classic Spanish dishes. As a small venue, this restaurant offers an intimate, unpretentious setting with decent portions, a nice selection of drinks and an attentive wait staff.

Basque in the Possibilities

Décor: typical. Damage: overpriced. Menu: non-existent. We're not being ironic. There was really no menu. The restaurant, a "Basque Modern Tavern," has a buffet of approximately a dozen tapas (more accurately pinchos), a drink menu, and a waiter who quickly recites the non-tapas offerings. We started with the tapas, which were on the bar when we arrived. YY15 for each tapa seemed a bit expensive when they were cold and had no descriptions, leaving us to awkwardly interrogate the waiter about what was in the bruschetta-esque starters. Aside from their temperature, the tapas tasted okay. Of the ones we sampled, the seared steak, salmon, and omelet were our favorites. We supplemented our tapas with paella for three (YY210). The pan of freshly cooked shellfish-infused rice was large but saffron-less and too salty. We expect promising things from the newly opened 528 Kanding Lu area, but Kuluska has a ways to go yet. --Georgia Sparling

What a nice surprise ! We were near by last Saturday and we though why not try the Spanish place. We had not read the review before so I guess we came in with a neutral mind. First we were welcome with smile. Service is done partly by the Spanish owner/Chinese staff. Atmosphere and decoration are nice and relax in the same time. There were regular (Spanish speakers) having drinks and tapas together, that is reassuring. We picked tapas on the bar, there were good and we had this feeling of home made food (meaning it doesn't look perfect when you look at it but have a real taste.). We also ordered some ham/bechamel croquette that were delicious. We shared a 1 portion paella for 2 (I regret to not have ordered more) and tasty as well. In my point of view special 5 stars to the dessert plate (50rmb) in which you can try a bit of 5 different desserts, one it was generous in quantity, 2 it was really really good (and dessert is my thing, I love cook and eat all kind of dessert but I am very difficult).I am not Spanish neither basque so I can't guaranty the food is authentic but we liked it and we had with my friend a nice diner and nice time there. And when the bills came, we were surprised as it was reasonable and they gave us our fapiao without problem. We will be back.

Hi!!!! For me,Spanih, was a really nice surprise to discover this restaurant in Shanghai the second week of August 2010 ... after a tour for the country visiting several cities in Chinain a couple of weeks we had a lot of desires of eating some Spanish food so we try this restaurant we had seen in a program tv in Spain. The food was excellent and make us remember the one of our mums... delicious!!!! We still think that the shripms in garlic sauce we have eaten in Kuluska are best than most of the ones served in restaurants in Spain. We also had a botle of red wine because in not too many restaurants you can afford that and we must remark that the wine selection is really good, different from another Spanish restaurants that just serve the traditional/Classic/Old-fashiones wines, some of them never distributed in Spain and just sold for export... But, this is not the case in Kuluska where we had the wine that we usual had in our city in Spain. The price was right, it was more or less the price of Shanghai restaurants, I don't remember exactly the price so it is a good signal because I can remember that the day after in the French area we paid in an Italian restaurant 50 euros for two pizzas and two beers... crazy!!!!

TINYBIG...THE OWNER IS BASQUE (ION)SO IS THE CHEF, JUST THE COOK, AS WE ARE IN CHINA, IS CHINESE. THE OWNER, ION DOES SPEAK BASQUE, OF COURSE, AND IF YOU FIND A LACK OF BASQUE CULTURE IN KULUSKA, TRY LOOKING AT THE PICTURES, AND DECO, OR EVEN ASKING THE STAFF, THEY´LL TEACH YOU SOMETHING ABOUT THE BASQUE COUNTRY´s CULTURE. THANKS THOUGH FOR YOUR REVIEW.

Basque restaurant? The basque culture is so strong and alive- even in these globalization days- that i feel it deserves better, i was expecting something much more authentic. I spent a year in the spanish basque country and were hoping to feel back "at home", but it was not the case. Maybe my expectations were too high!

Was there last night for dinner after deciding to give the restuarant a second second chance. This past visit reaffirmed my conclusion that it is overpriced for what you get. The taste and overall general quality of the dishes were pretty low. We ordered the spinach salad with goat cheese, but mostly got a plate of spinach with tasteless dressing. The ham and cheese croquettes three tiny portions of what merely tasted like fried cheese. The clams came in a thick "green sauce" that did nothing much to compliment the taste of the clams themselves. Although the wine is cheap at 25RMB for a glass, our bill was close to 200RMB with two glasses of wine, a soda, and 4 small tapas. Although the atmosphere is inviting and defintely spanish, it doesn't make up for the food.

Place that I chose to have dinner with my estranged wife since our brief separation, I thought that I might choose somewhere that is out of the ordinary, not aware of that many Spanish restaurants around town albeit Willy's , and Kanding road is close to where she lives now anyway, so I decided to give them a try and see if it will impress her and may bring us back together. Unfortunately Spanish cuisine is not to her taste, but despite being the first time she's tried it, the Paella did raise her eyebrows and she even took the left overs home in a doggy bag!

(Aftermath: We're back together for good now, though still living separately.)

We never had a problem with no spaniard regarding the levels of salt of our food, never. Actually they love our food, spaniards, I mean. The reason why we have so many different restaurants in Shanghai is because we humans love to taste different things, different ways...maybe Northern Spanish Cuisine is just not your cup of tea. Therefore, I am so sorry that you just don;t seem to appreciate nor like our food. It is impossible to satisfy everybody.

Please recieve my very bests.

Kuluska team:"I have never tasted Spanish cuisine from a chinese as accurate as his ".

Well dear; this does not say anything about the quality of your food an the way it should be prepared, does it ? :)

I have eaten all over Europe, also in Spain; Kuluska food is always extremely oversalted and this has nothing to do with the way food is cooked in your homecountry. It takes away the taste and should be used in a moderate way and can be added extra afterwards durig dinner according someones taste.

It is always good to see that our costumers take their time to make reviews about us and of course, we are aware about them being sometimes nice and sometimes not that nice. Anyways, thanks. About our food being too salty...in SPAIN we eat like that, using much more quantity of salt than in any other countries, so if we decided not to use it as much as in Spain because we are in China, it just would NOT be Spanish food. Our head chef Ion has tought our second chef how to cook. He is a wonderful chinese, from Anhui province, extremely professional and he uses the salt as he learned to use it. I have never tasted Spanish cuisine from a chinese as accurate as his, therefore, I find no reason why I should kick his ass. Thanks again. Kuluska Team.

I had to be there this week and was wondering if something change after my last visit. It's not bad; staff is nice, setting is good, but again and again; all mains are oversalted, fish with clams and the beef. same as during my last visit. Please; hide the salt bowl for you chef.

This Spanish gem is a real find if you fancy some reasonably prices tapas, good wine and friendly service. Easy to reach and in the growing hub at Xikang Lu and Kangding Lu, the owners are exceptionally friendly and the atmosphere upbeat. It has a particularly good vibe on a Wednesdays, and regular DJs. The owners have also recently opened Kuluska Art Space to compliment the restaurant, which will feature local emerging artists.

I've tried Kuluska's Wednesday deal (RMB 50 for 4 items, pintxos or drinks) and I was not impressed by the average food and sangria. The wines are pretty good for that price and the atmosphere is awesome, so hit it as a regular bar and you'll love it. And don't forget your jacket ! :-)

to Kuluska Owners and the community here, KULUSKA has inexpensive wine on Wednesday. It's an fun hang-out place with friends. My point is NOT the loss of a jacket, but it's the attitude that I received from making the call inquiring about my it. If you don't want to be bothered during non-working hours, then do not list your cell phone number but a land line in these public directories (this is not the only website I checked). beside, it was a friend who also passed me your number praising your friendliness. coming from a extensive experiences in restaurant business, great food, good environment is equally important to customer's service.

Just forgot...I'm really sorry about your jacket...I do have a mapa mundi, and a couple of winter coats that s.o left here sometime...but no black jacket...blame it on me, I guess. I kindly invite you to come over again, so we can talk it over...the city weekend community has nothing to do with this... Thanks again.

FOR BENGOFILMS: Nobody has never said anything about me being rude, all the way round!!!. You know you called me more tha once and I offered you the 4 times you called me the same answer. I was not there, i could only find out what happened to your jacket whenever I was there. Anyways, just for you to know, we've been fighting for more than 3 years to build up Kuluska's concept and environmet and I just don't think your comments are fair to us, nor harmful to our business. Next time, please say the truth and tell everyone the complete story about your calls. Besides, our wine is cheap on wednesday for you to enjoy a cool place, a nice terrace, nice music and cheap prices. FAIR FOR EVERYONE. Could you really say that you were mistreated here? How come you write this to think you can harm our family business in such a way? Thanks anyways...

apparently this restaurant has no real phone number listed but only a cell phone number. last night I went there and left my jacket there. I called the only number listed. I kindly asked the person about my jacket and surprising the person on the other end was loud, impatient and blaming on me for calling the cell. If they want to have a good business in the future, they have learn to be nice and helpful.

Weds night is a good deal - rmb 15 for wine/beer/tapas. And the 50 rmb coupon is also good for 4 of the same. The beer is quite week but still refreshing on a warm spring evening. We weren't too impressed with the selection of tapas on offer - none of them stood out with any outstanding flavours. Will be back to try the a la carte menu.

PS Is a tavern supposed to be this bright?

Had lunch there, nice deal on a set lunch. Decor is nice and staff is willing but their food: 2 appetizers and 2 mains were over salted; all 4 of them, not just a bit but terrible. Seems like their cook likes a bite......As for the House wine; there are much more favourable wines than the Spanish Casa Solar in the same price range, but that's just my personal taste I guess :)
