Beneath the colorful rainbow of peppers and chilis, these Sichuan dishes exude a myriad of flavors that add depth to what would otherwise be a run-of-the-mill experience elsewhere. From piquant shrimp to mouthwatering shuizhu niurou (water-boiled beef laden with huaojiao), there is a spicy adventure here just waiting to be had.

More than Spicy

Even though Shanghai has plenty of Sichuan restaurants to choose from, Deng Jia Chuan Cai stands out from standard Sichuan joints for its variety of dishes and depth of flavor. While Deng Jia Chuan Cai serves up the food nice and spicy, you will find hearty and intricate flavors laced into the mala. Excellent renditions of traditional fare like suanni bairou (YY26), easily the best sliced lean pork with garlic in Shanghai, and shuizhu niurou (YY38), beef cooked in water with a serious mala kick, really got us started and we were eager to try some dishes we hadn't tried before. Particularly of note were a dish of piquant fried shrimp, yuxiang xiaqiu (YY88), and zhutong kourou (YY38), sticky rice and pork baked in a bamboo shaft. By far the most delectable part of the meal was a flavorful crab soup, laotanzi rouxie (price contingent on the size of the crab). After we had devoured the crab, the staff added vermicelli noodles to the broth. It was the perfect end to an entirely delicious meal. --Lisa Weir

Been eating out in Shanghai nearly every day for almost 4 years. This place is right at the top of my list for Chinese food. Great menu, great price, great location right next to Kaiba. Go, go, go!!! You will be happy you did.

Great restaurant - great food, great service. Not all of the dishes are Sichuan dishes - they have some traditional Shanghai foods, but the flavor of all of the Sichuan dishes are great. The zhe er gen (折耳根), fish flavored leafy veggie salad is very authentic, the kungpao chicken (宫爆鸡丁 is slightly sweet with a spicy kick (although do watch for skin on the chicken) and the dandan noodles (担担面),liangfen(凉粉)and spicy sour potato noodles(酸辣粉) all are delicious. In Shanghai, finding so many different flavors of spicyness is difficult, but this restaurant has variety of spicyness, flavors, and ingredients. Finally, the duck blood in hot oil with vegetables dish (毛血旺), although not my personal favorite, is very authentic to Sichuan flavors.

To add another correction - i belive the name is Deng Ji Chuan Cai (邓记川菜) Not Deng Jia Chuan Cai.

By far the best Chinese restuarant in Shanghai. Don't equate this with your run-of-the mill oil infested over spiced sichuan place.

The flavors here are amazing, a great ranging menu, everything is appropriately spiced and not greasy whatsoever. I've been here at least 5 times and ever single time I'm impressed. And I live on the complete other side of town. Stewed frog, sweet and sour pork, shrimp dishes, eel...it's all superb. (there's only one thing I didn't like and that was the crab tofu)

Great place to take people, especially visitors. One correction though. The address is 737 DingXi (not 373). ENJOY!
