This casual and crowded Shanghai eatery is a good lunchtime bet with its cheap prices and stewed duck vermicelli with cilantro and tofu. Crispy eggrolls, mixed noodles and above average pork xiaolongbao all at single digit prices makes up for the limited ambience and sometimes surly service.

Duck, Duck and more Duck
Tucked away on the corner of Guangdong lu and Zhejiang lu is this delightfully cheap shop specializing in duck vermicelli soup. Gigantic metal pots of bubbling soup with floating duck oil atop pays homage to this spot's reputation as an authentic, no-fuss Chinese eatery while a convenient location and single digit prices lure in a steady lunch time crowd. There's always someone wolfing down a generous bowl of the vibrant, almost milky vermicelli soup (RMB9). Topped liberally with cilantro, mini fried tofu halves and canard kidneys, drinking the soup will trigger an intense, duck flavored flood in the mouth--the type of flavor you'd only end up with after boiling a whole duck for a day. Top your vermicelli with a lion head meatball (RMB4), a super-sized all-pork ball with a soft, juicy interior. Those with an ambitious appetite should try the homestyle pork, leek and mushroom eggrolls, a steal at 4 for RMB5, that stay mysteriously crispy even after a rainy day delivery. Joanne Yao
