Shanghai's ever popular street vendor has practically become an institution, serving fried pork and sage filled shengjian (fried soup dumplings) to eager patrons who queue up round the block for these treats. Though a bit tricky, your best bet is to puncture a sizable hole in the firm dough, suck up the delicious soup, dip it in sweet vinegar and devour the rest.

FYI the Wujiang Lu restaurant is still open, it's on the second floor of the same mall Costa Coffee is in. Delicious food!

Walking distance in my 'hood' decided to give it a whirl. The long line around the mall block, was a good sign. The large window where you get to see them cooking the dumplings was quite a treat. Be aware that you have to pay first at the cashier before you get in line, as that is the pick up line whether you dine in or take out. Lucky for us, the guy in front of us in line informed us before it was too late, lol. The restaurant did not receive an excellent review rating on their wall. And I noticed as I watched the cooking prep, that the staff is not really keeping their hair completely under cap. The caps are too small. I think they should require all hair to be underneath the cap to avoid hair getting in the food. We ordered 2 boxes of dumplings, which were taken from the same large batch, all of which the bottoms were burned. the flavor was awesome however.

From time to time, you stumble upon a restaurant so mind-bendingly good you feel compelled to tell your friends, treat your folks and start a Facebook group extolling the virtues of this sanctum of culinary gold. Xiao Yang’s Fried Dumplings is exactly this type of establishment.
I urge you to head here immediately and grab a plate of the infamous pork dumplings. The dumpling shell is both chewy and crispy and contains a mouth-watering pork and sage filling. Watch the locals for a lesson in how to eat them, add some vinegar and chilli and enjoy the taste explosion. You can thank me later.
The best dumplings EVER!!! I love the dumplings here. I found this place accidently on my first day in Shanghai, using my rule that if its busy and people are willing to wait then whats getting served at the front of the que, must be worth the wait. On this first visit i was a bit confused because you pay first and then you que again to give your receipt to the cook before taking a seat on one of the crowded and dumpling 'juice' covered tables. When the dumplings arrived being then a very inexperienced dumpling eater I picked 1 up and took an eager bite. What followed this first bite was a combination of pleasure, pain and pure joy, the scaulding soup squirted up all over my nose and all over the guy sitting next to me much to his amusement and to the horror of my poor nose. This soup as misdirected as it was, tasted incredible and the meat inside tender and perfectly seasoned. The soiled guy next to me after he cleaned up his shirt then showed me the proper way to eat these dumplings. The next one was devoured as follows, 1. wait 5 mins after the dumpings have arrived at your table. 2. nibble a small corner off the side 3. gently suck out the delicous soup 4. stuff the rest in your mouth. 5. repeat steps 1-4 untill full and do it often.
Price: 5 yuan for 4 dumplings

Not much to say here. Best 生煎 in shanghai, probably. Locals and Laowai agree.

Sorry to say we gotta kiss it goodbye, Zach. The Gummymint here don't want ugly traditional Shanghainese things messing up that thing that's happening next year.

I literally stumbled into this place and now basically refuse to get my dumplings from anywhere else. It's one of the best meals I can get in Shanghai.

I live on Qinghai Lu right next to Wujiang Lu where they have two Yang's Fried Dumpling places right next to eachother. Yang's is amazing and I eat it at least twice a week. People eat Yang's for breakfast, lunch, dinner, second dinner, late night snack....all hours of the day, there will be lines at Yang's.

Who doesn't know about Yang's Dumpling? Every person i knwo that comes to visit Shanghai, I always take them here for these dumplings.
at 4.5 rmb for 4 dumplings, how can you go wrong?
Helpful hint: 1. Be prepared to wait in line. 2. make sure you have tissue with you 3. suck before you chow ;)

It is truly amzing dumplings! I called it the 'squirting' dumplings coz it squirts out deliciously yummy broth with each bite...it's the cousin of the xiaolongbao..bigger in size, twice the amount of filling & a thicker dumpling skin that is both chewy & crispy!
Have been told that the 'old' Wujiang Street would be closed down a few months ago for future development but it's still there and business is good!
They have also opened a shop just above Costa Coffee on the Wujiang Leisure Street. So check it out too when that craving pops up again!
This is the best street-food in Shanghai! Go line up patiently for the dumplings and douse them with the vinegar in the teapot + the chilli from the pot. After you finish it, go line up at the same store 5 meters away....

Beyond amazing. It actually has a generous amount of hot delicious soup inside (can't stand it when dumplings only have a pathetic little amount). The meat is tasty and soft, and the 'bao' itself is finely textured and absolutely divine!
And at only RMB4.5 for 4 big dumplings, it was a bargain.
I'll be back.

I've never managed to eat at either the old or new Wujiang Lu locations, because the lines are so long and congested with old ladies that need 50 shengjian for some reason. There is this other Yang's right off the Nanjing Dong Lu walking street, corner of Guizhou Lu, way in the back of the big snack shop that's visible from the street. Lines are much shorter at that one.
