City Weekend says

This shack on famed crawdad street Shouning Lu dishes up fresh, garlicky crawfish by the kilo. Get a tub (literally a tub) of the poor man's lobster, shrimp and soda for way less than you'd pay for seafood anywhere else (except maybe Tongchuan Lu).

Chinese Bite | Crawfish Crawl

In America, summertime is hot dogs and baseball. In Shanghai, it’s crayfish and motorbike dodging. To celebrate the start of the season, we headed to the city’s crustacean epicenter–Shouning Lu. Dozens of crawdaddy shops line the street, but we’re partial to number 17, a slightly more modern outlet with milk cartons full of live, energetic crayfish and their pale cousins, squilla (_fugui xia_). We ordered half a kilo of each and donned our plastic bibs for a feast. The crayfish (¥28 for 500g) were fantastically fresh.

Unlike the chewier, lower-quality variety found at comparatively upscale restaurants like Fomo, these tails were melt-in-your-mouth tender, and gently infused with a mildly spicy broth. We were even conveniently able to order delectable grilled oysters and scallops (¥5 for each) in thick garlic sauce from a nearby stall without leaving our table.

Don’t let the summer pass by without feasting on these little lobsters, but given the mess, it’s not a first-date kind of meal. Jack Caylin
