City Weekend says

This glorified hole-in-wall is a perfect place to grab a midnight meal of xiaolongbao. You won't be the only one--this place is filled with local patrons from 6:30 in the morning. Their signature soup dumplings are cheap and fresh, but if you're not in the mood, you can always try the exceptional vegetable porridge and mala tofu.

Good spot for a more local version of XLB. It can be packed at lunch, so I would recommend trying it early in the week after work.

Fu Chun at lunch time (AKA rush hour) is not for the faint of heart but if you can master the names of a few great dishes and beat out Shanghainese people for a table, it is worth it. The Fu Chun Xiaolong are delicious and brought piping hot to your table. I have yet to try the crab roe version but I am sure they are delicious too. The huntun soups are also yummy and the fried noodles taste just like greasy lo mein from home (if you are craving American Chinese food). Do yourself a favor and make sure to get at least one portion of the pork ribs (zhu pai) - breaded and deep fried and delicious for only 7 RMB!

read alot of reviews on this as it is dubbed one of the best xlb in shanghai... ordered almost all the flavors in the menu , i find the crab meat one is the best.. the portion is big and i think we ordered too much..couldnt finish the supposedlyy popular pork cutlet and some other dim sums... it was near my place and was too convenient.. definately worth a try.. first thing i'd do is to visit it once i get back to sh but for now.. jiao zhi's from harbin!!:) overall experience 8.5/10!!

Ooh. I've been there. It's good. City Weekend listing here. One of these weeks, I'll go to jia jia and fu chun and do a blow-by-blow review/comparison.

it used to be on Henan Nan Lu, and seems quite well known by many local folks. I've only heard of it before and couldn't find it the when i tried to look for it in the past. I think it's called Jia Jia (佳家汤包). From my search today I found out they moved to Huanghe Rd. 河南南路638号(文庙路口)

b10m4n, you should try this place. It's pretty good--not Din Tai Fung status (though to be fair, it's not priced at DTF level either...), but more like the Shanghainese equivalent of the 24 hour taco stand that everyone likes, with less drunk people. It's a block from where i live, so I'm always there after work, like at 11pm. What is this other hole in the wall xiaolong place you speak of? Share!

This is the 2nd time in a day I read random reviews of Fu Chun, seems like I need to try it. Though I've lived in SH for more than 4 years, its the first time I heard of Fu Chun. And not many reviews around either unlike that one "hole in the wall" on Henan Lu and Wenmiao Lu

Even after three years in Shanghai, it can still be hard to enjoy Chinese opera, stinky tofu and raw crab. But in the case of Fu Chun, consider us converted. This excellent restaurant has delicious dishes that are accessible to foreigners as well as specialties the typical expat hasn’t tried.

Fu Chun is particularly famous for their xiaolongbao (¥4 for 6), considered by some to be the best in town. On our last visit, we tried the mixed pork and shrimp pork varieties, though admittedly had a preference for the straight pork version.

Other musts are the fried pork cutlet, the broiled eel, and gan shao chang yu (¥8.54 for 50g) a flavorful, spicy fish head cooked in sesame oil and Chinese pepper. There’s also a classic Shanghainese dish called cai pao fan (¥10), a mild, soupy rice with minced bok choy, ideal for lunch on a pleasant day. And for all you laowai out there who always appreciate a safe choice, the mala tofu (¥15) is particularly good.Lisa Weir
