This restaurant specializes in Peruvian-style rotisserie-cooked chicken. Pretty much everything on the menu features poultry: you can get roasted chicken, chicken sandwiches, chicken salads and even chicken soup. They specialize in delivery but you can dine in as well.

unfortunately I am writing this review. I have enjoyed brasa for a long time. I went away for a while last year but came back hoping to continue to enjoy. Today I received my second bad experience and now I must state it.
today was only a small thing, but it is indicative of happens at brasa chicken these days. Today I ordered quater chicken combo with garlic fries. Those of you who had it when the shaanxi branch was open know that the garlic fries are delicious. Today the fries came as plain fries in 2 cups (usually used by shops to make it appear they are providing more fries than they are - i know, i used to own a chain of chicken shops in oz). the only thing that separated these fries from the normal ones is that someone had dumped a clump of raw to the side (which I didnt even notice until i had eaten half the cup).
These are not garlic fries...or at least how they were once served.
Alone, this is not a huge issue. It is what happens when you ring the store that lead to this bad review. I rang and advised them that there was just a clump of cold garlic and questioned why they no longer served with parsely and COOKED garlic - to which i was told "did it come with garlic?" "Well, this is how we serve it now."
2 months ago I ordered a meal with a large chips NO salt for my girlfriends health concerns. They came with salt - after about an hour and 10 minutes. Again, on its own not a big deal. Upon ringing I spoke the girl on the phone (this time on the normally polite filipino lady who answers) who said "ok, what do you want me to do about it?" I just hung up.
And so, I will just hang up on brasa chicken altogether. Not because their chicken is bad, but because they dont care enough to correct things or even prepare their food as advertised. Service is bad and I'm sorry, but pre-cooked chips with a spoon of RAW garlic does not constitute good food.

Despite reading the recent bad reviews i decided to give it a go (ordered once before about 6 months ago and it was good) since brasa had taken the time to respond to the bad reviews and said they working to improve things and i'm pleased to say we had a very good experience. They said it would take 45mins-1hour which is what sherpas would take to deliver to us, and it came in 40mins and was reasonably hot and very tasty.

@trufflley, Jinqiao Brasa is closed!

I used to be a regular but the whole place has dropped since openening. The fries I ordered last month were obviously cooked in old oil and after one bite I threw them in the bin. The half chicken was ok but I opted to make a stock out of it for some chicken n veg soup...so not a total waste. I often dine in and this has also put me off the food. In the small dining area they have delivery boys, reception staff and chip man running back n forwards with bowls of fries cooked out back. They are all yelling into the kitchen and combine this with a riginging phone, creates a place where you DO NOT want to be. The yelling sounds like a chicken hatchery on steroids. I also notice their other ventures are now closed as I wanted a nice spacious place to eat my chicken. Maybe Eduardo Vargas is taking his eye of the ball as he did with his grill. Costly for investors?

you should change this - the website says last order is at 10:30pm, and the Jinqiao branch is not open.

I signed up to Cityweekend just to complain about the absolutely terrible delivery service for Brasa. After waiting 1 hour 38 minutes (exact) for my sandwich to arrive, I called them only to be told it will take another 30 minutes, even though their closest branch is a 10 minute walk away. I guess their chickens had flown the coop, time for me to bail out from them too

Unrealiable delivery service! I made my order online at around 4.30pm and gave specific instructions for them to deliver between 6.30-7.30pm. I called around 6pm to make sure they received my order and see what time I should expect them. The lady on the other end didn't even check where I'm calling from and just said they're on their way. After 7.30 and I still don't have my order, I called and the lady said she'll check. They ended up coming at 8 and offered a 20% discount. I was very upset as money is obviously not the issue here. Is the quality of the chicken worth all this stress? No! I'd rather go to City Shop for some stress-free rotisseri chicken.

terrible delivery service!!!! more than 2 hours waiting! i havent seen something similar in my life! just not worth it. do not order from this place!!!!

Two hours to deliver 1 cold chicken, way to go Brasa!

Dear Brasa Staff and Owners,
Please stop giving yourselves 5-stars every time you make a comment following a customer complaint.
Thanks.

To our last reviewer
Thank you for your email and comment. Our food is fresh and healthy. We have never had a case of food poisoning since we open in November. We do the cleaning at the begining and closing time of everything, and touch ups during the day, i will go to the store again today and show your review to my staff so we refresh procedures. Again BRASA food is 100% fresh and healthy.

I order from Brasa Chicken delivery on a regular basis and have always thought the food was quite decent for how much it cost. Over the weekend, while I was in the neighborhood, I decided that I will go to Brasa to get dinner instead of order delivery; which I regret in doing so as soon as I arrived at Brasa.
Decor and staffs were all alright, as I never expected anything fancy or big for this type of operations. However, what was shocking and really troubled me was the hygiene of its 'kitchen'. While I was waiting for my food, I sat right next to the kitchen door (which was left open) and in full view was: disgusting dirty kitchen floor, glass door refrigerator showing digits of 13 on its upper right hand corner (temperature) and with quite a few items in the fridge were not stored in sealed containers. I believe these conditions violate the hygiene regulations. And there was no sign of the hygiene indication board (the one with the faces) anywhere in the restaurant.
Also, one of the kitchen staffs dropped a sheet of Brasa logo stickers (which you find on top of all Brasa's food containers when you receive your delivery) on the floor, picked it up and continued to peel off the stickers and placed them on the lids of containers that stored my dinner, WITHOUT washing her hand or simply to use a clean sheet of stickers.
At this point, not only I'm glad that I didn't order the side salad; I was on the verge to cancel my order and walk out. But I didn't and ended up throwing over RMB 100 worth of Brasa food into the dumpster after I got home, told my dinner partners about it and us staring at the Brasa containers for a good 20 minutes and decided we simply can't eat that after seeing the poor hygiene of where the food was prepared.
This is my first review, and unfortunately is for a venue which I WAS a frequent patron (delivery) for the value of its product. I had no expectation to Brasa's decor and staff service (which they were all quit friendly and helpful), but hygiene is something that should never be compromised or neglected no matter how small the establishment is or cheap its products are; especially when it's created and backed by one of Shanghai's most well known restaurateur Eduardo Vargas!

Please Brasa Chicken, STOP DELIVERING SOGGY FRENCH FRIES!!!!!!
I love this place, the chicken is really good and so is the Peruvian flan, and I can't complain about the price. But please please PLEASE figure out another way to package your french fries for delivery. They are incredibly soggy and almost inedible after being packed in an airtight plastic container. You need to let the steam escape!! Luckily, I have a toaster oven so I just toasted the soggy potato pieces back into fries, but for someone who doesn't have an oven, that's no fun.
I've eaten in the restaurant before and I ordered delivery for the first time this week. After reading the previous posts from other customers complaining about soggy french fries, I decided to order garlic potatoes. But the Xuhui branch was out of garlic potatoes. Sure, I ordered around 9:30pm on a Wednesday night, but for a place that claims on their delivery menu to be open until 4AM, running out of garlic potatoes at 9pm isn't especially good for business.
And lastly, the delivery fee.... What can I say. The menu claims there is free delivery within 1.5 km. Great! But I don't live so close, but the menu claims that for delivery farther than 1.5km is 10 rmb. So.... why did the woman who took my order say delivery was 20 rmb? I argued with her, it's clearly printed on the menu that the delivery fee is 10rmb. If it isn't, then you might want to your re-word that sentence to "Above 1.5 km 'starts' at 10 rmb." That would really help avoid confusion, thanks!
Don't get me wrong, the food here is quite good. But eventually, after I get over that high, I probably won't bother ordering from this place if it is still so inconvenient...
Dear unhappy customer. Thank you for your comment.
We agree with your comment. That manager has been let go.
Margaret and Lisa are the duty managers at Brasa Xuhui and Fred and Helena at Brasa Jinqiao.
Chef Kim is back from his overseas training and back in the Brasa head kitchen.
Also free delivery will become available from May 1st to all our customers.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused for our mistakes. Sometimes the biggest problems are people problems. We are on top of things and we are in the business of feeding people.
Try our all you can eat for 58rmb with free flow soft drinks.

I was a loyal customer of brasa but last few times I was disappointed. Specially last week went to the shop in shangxi rd. and was dirty, the delivery guys were arguing with the manager very loudly(obviously I didn’t understand what they were talking about)., we were the only two customers and the service was pretty bad I’m sorry brasa is going down, I used to like it a lot. Bye bye brasa
Dear Shanghai customers
Brasa Chicken Jinqiao (Pudong) is now officially opened. We look forward to seeing you there.
This location is much bigger and comfortable than the Xuhui store. Come and check it out at Life Hub @ Jinqiao (www.jinqiaojinqiao.com)
www.brasachicken.com.cn

While I am still disappointed with how long my meal took, it just arrived and it was delicious. A very good wrap, chicken noodle soup had great flavor, and they even threw in a delicious flan for the long wait (good policy). If Brasa can get their delivery mechanism under control, this place will be a hit.

I don't understand how a restaurant who's philosophy pivots on good service and delivery is so poor at delivering food on time. I ordered chicken 1 hour 40 minutes ago and it has yet to arrive. It's not as if the menu is all that complicated. Put chicken in oven. Cook chicken. Deliver chicken on time. Pull it together, Brasa.

3rd time ordering and service gets better each time. Delivery was on time, Chicken was larger than expect and plump. Garlic fries were tasty (i think baked). Green Sauce (chimichurri?) was great, but the red sauce is a little boring and I think needs some heat. I will continue to order, eat and be happy.

Having read the reviews in the last 2 weeks, we were a little concerned about whether the chicken would be undercooked, as we are pregnant.
Called at 4pm today for 6pm delivery, and specifically asked for it to be well-baked. Added Garlic Rice, because we cant resist Garlic.
Have to say, the best Chicken in Shanghai. Absolutely delighted by the subtle herbs and spices and flavour. Fries werent super Garlic but combined with the meal, they were perfect.
Will definitely be ordering this Sunday evening treat again soon !

Dear Customers
Yes, Brasa Chicken is simple casual comfort food. In Peru it is eaten as a replacement meal on a weekly basis by 90% of the population. It is just chicken + fries + a garden salad. Simple and healthy food.

Not impressed. Its just chicken, garlic fries could have been better, but the chicken just didn't do nothing for me. flan, just a flan. presentation was nice though.

The bad part: My roommate and I ordered from Brasa this evening. The chicken that we got in the delivery was not just underdone, it actually had blood seeping out of it when we bit into it and the flesh close to the bone on some of the pieces of meat was completely pink and raw. This is not only unpleasant but also a great big health hazard and I can’t understand, for all Brasa’s promotion about roasting the chickens for an hour, how that happened. Perhaps an hour is not long enough?
The good part: We were pretty annoyed with this and we rang up to ask for our money back. The lady we spoke to, to be fair to her, was very polite and apologetic, and she offered to redo the order for us. We declined the offer because we’d been put off the whole chicken experience.
So, great customer service, I cannot fault the way our complaint was handled.
But really disappointed by the quality of the food. We won’t be ordering from there again.Dear Customers and Friends
Brasa Chicken will be closed for the CNY from the 13th to 16th inclusive. We wish you a great holidays. www.brasachicken.com.cn Delivery 4005202172

Thank you in advance
Maggie Jin - Duty Manager

Brasa's staff does act well on some public comments on several expat sites, BUT: never reply any personal mail and their attitude on the phone hndling complaints is arrogant and hilarious.....
Standard local service; keeping up public appearances and treat your customers as fools as they do not exist.....a mess....

thanks for reply, but I posted my comment on Tuesday afternoon, this morning I checked my email again to see if I had a reply from my Friday email, but still no reply.
so could you please advise what is your delivery charge
when will the new website be up an running ?
Our apologies for the lack of communication sir. The office is closed during the weekends.
A new website with online ordering is being made and with more clear information.
For further inquiries please kindly contact Fred - Brasa Operations Manager on 13361876739 or Brasa Xuhui Duty Manager on 13127621640

My wife rang on friday night to place an order for the 1st time. We live in gubei, the lady on phone said delivery charge was 35rmb, we explained that we had a leaflet saying del charge was 10rmb over 1.5km, she said check the website. We did, no mention of del charge on website at all, we cancelled the order.
I sent an email to brasa on friday night asking them to clarify their delivery charge and explained the above, no reply.
So:
- No reply to email
- No del charge on wesbite
- Incorrect del charge on leaflet if lady on phone was correct
- 35rmb is ridiculous, sherpas and many other places charge a fraction of that.
Sort it out brasa !
Ate in-store last night. Everything was pretty good, though the house salad was dripping with dressing. Go for the garlic fries. I had a half chicken set, but the 1/4 will do you up just fine. I wish they could get the skin crispier though. That's where the joy is.

Chicken is phenomenal, sides are tasty and portions are very generous.
Only downside is that they're stumbling on the little things. The delivery guy doesn't bring correct change and cutlery/napkins are left in the bike...so close to perfection!

The website still has a trojan, so it's impossible to locate the menu to order over the phone!
Hello, it has been fixed. www.brasachicken.com.cn
Business as usual now. Xuhui. Soon Jinqiao, Expo 2010, Jing'an and Honqiao

Braza guys, your chicken is great! Juicy to perfection.
But don't go thinking this comment is all wonders about you! You guys seem to have a big problem with your website.
Apparently - and in case you guys didn't know - your website is infected with a trojan virus! Well, at least that's what the shanghai expat forum is saying.
http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/MDForum-viewtopic-t-104773.phtml
So watch out you pc fellas!
Thank you for your comment Jeanpaolo, we are changing the boxes for foil bags to avoid this type of problems and to keep the chicken warmer. The bags are being made as we speak. Please is not fare to compare Brasa with carrefour as it is a totally different product. Firstly you have to go there, park the car, spend 200 rmb more in other things you don't need just because you are in there, secondly the chicken is half the size (700grams) instead of 1.5kilos (brasa), therefore half the price. thirdly is cooked with gas, Brasa is roasted with charcoal.
I do thank you for your comments but word of mouth is a killer so i would have to say, Brasa is better than Carrefour any time any day.
BTW we are opening a new store in Life Hub Jinqiao, with 50 seats for our Pudong customers, www.jinqiaojinqiao.com Before May 2010, twor bigger Brasa stores will be opening in Jing'an and Honqiao to serve your and your community better. We encourage you to come to our restaurants and eat-in.
With love. The Brasa Team :)

I ordered from Brasa Chicken. And I was quite disappointed, even though I am someone who likes to eat chicken (I used to go to Kenny Rogers Roasters).
It took less than an hour for the chicken to arrive, so I didn't have the same problem as some of the other reviews. But the box (which looked nice) was dripping a lot. When the delivery guy took the box out of his bag, it dripped all over the floor outside my front door, andall over the mat/carpet. I had to take it into the kitchen and it dripped everywhere! I quickly cleaned up the floor so that no time would be wasted before my girlfriend and I ate the chicken.
The chicken was not bad, but not great. Maybe it would have been better if it was still warm? The sauces: there was a tomato-based sauce, which was ok. And a green sauce - it was hard to get that on the chicken, as it is slides off everytime I dipped into it. In the end I realized that the green sauce did not taste so good anyway.
I'd recommend that you get grilled chicken from Carrefour. It's much cheaper. Then put it in your fridge and microwave it when you want to eat chicken (keep the microwave setting low and cook for a longer time). It tastes almost as good as Brasa, and you can choose any sauce you like to dip it in and keep that in your fridge, too. That way: the chicken will not drip all over your floor, you will have warm/ heated chicken, you can choose whatever sauce you want and you will save money.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2010
Warm wishes
The Brasa Family

Brasa's clearly dominated the market in freshly roasted chicken - plump and tender and moist.. with browned skin rubbed with spices and herb.
It's reasonably priced for the large portion (compared to other local-sized chickens) and you can select from Red sauce (a tasty mild tomato salsa) or Green sauce (a tantalising blend of herbs)
The chicken is paired perfectly with the garlic & herb fries, and a fresh garden salad. But it's best topped off with their Peruvian Flan - a creamy custard wonder of a dessert. Delicioso!

I have ordered from Brasa about 4 times now. The first couple of times delivery times were long, but I have to admit the food at least arrived warm. The last two orders have been more timely but still on the 45-50 minute mark. The chicken is the best I have had in Shanghai hands down. Its juicy, tasty and the skin is nicely spiced. The sides are all ok with the roasted potatoes being the most inspirational of the bunch. Overall its a solid option for dinner especially when you are tired of the normal places.. and for the price it's a nice alternative..

I've ordered from there twice. Both times the food has arrived well under 1 hour, and that's despite the fact that I live pretty far from the restaurant. The chicken is probably some of the best food I've had here, and is a really great treat for yourself when you feel like a meat feast. The sauces are ok, nothing too special, the salad is simple, and the fries are average. The roasted potatoes were excellent though, and so I recommend them. Do what I do and go for broke; order a full chicken set meal - it's supposed to be for 4 people, but 2 of us managed to wolf it down. Highly recommended!!!

i have ordered form them now two times both times took them almost two hours, and my place is near their restaurant. the food was already cold, not worth the waiting time. i went to the restaurant with some friends thought was going to be different, the place is hard to find, the kitchen doesnt look clean, the food was ok though.

So Brasa is an complicated story. My colleagues and I decided to give it a go one slow lunch day.
First of all, Brasa's location is pretty funny. It is BURIED deep, deep in some random local apartment complex. It has no street frontage and you can't see it from the gate. Picture going to see a friend at one of these 17 tower complexes, and having to walk all over the place looking for a restaurant on the ground floor of one of the buildings. On top of all this, its not even on the first floor; its sortof sunken in the basement. Good thing we were in a good mood. But seriously, the location is terrible. Simply awful. Now I should add, that it appears Brasa was designed to be a take-out / delivery joint, in which case the crappy location becomes less relevant. Bottom line - DON'T go on foot to this place...you'll never find it.
Ok, so on to the more important stuff - food. The chicken was very tasty; I will give Brasa that. That's the chicken ONLY. The sides (and we tried them all within our party) were average at best. The "garlic fries" are normal fries with diced raw cold garlic put on top - - THAT'S IT. Pretty funny. So - the chicken is good, the sides suck, and the location is a joke.
So, this is a take-out place where the only thing you want to order is the chicken. The weird thing is, I can only ever see the take-out working for dinner. I can't imagine sitting at my desk and clawing through a wet piece of chicken at lunchtime.
I'm not sure what these guys were thinking here. Brasa is destined for failure in my mind, since the dine-in option is terrible, the lunch take-out business must be bad, and how many people are ordering in chicken for dinner!? Anyway, all the same, its pretty tasty chicken if you're in the mood.

I ordered the "chicken sandwich" because it's more substantial (let's face it, a "quarter chicken meal" fills no one up unless you're a little girl!). Even though it was soggy, it was REALLY GOOD. The bread was excellent and tasty and it was loaded with chunks of chicken - which was tender and moist and tasty.
The sandwich was bigger than I though (think large panini size) so I'm very pleased and my belly is sated.
Here's a pic of it --> http://tweetphoto.com/6514023
I also got the "peruvian flan" for dessert.Thumbs up!
http://tweetphoto.com/6520076 <-- pic of it
Not too syrupy sweet, but really creamy and actually quite solid. Great flavour and makes a fab dessert. Decent size too - 1 is enough for 1 person.
Will definitely order it again. Just would prefer faster delivery and non-soggy food next time.

I was told it took one hour to deliver, it did take 90 minutes to leave me eating a cold meal, which I partly did not order.......the chicken is good, even cold! but cold fries, instead of the ordered baked potatoes, and delivered with green instead of red sauce, were horrible. Some work to be done I suppose.
Dear NIcci
We are very sorry for the delay on delivery. Normally we deliver it between 30 to 50 minutes depends on the distance. We have just added 3 extra delivery motorcycles to minimise further delays. I ordered a family package 2 hours and 30 minutes ago and it still hasn't arrived. No courtesy call to say it would be late. I called them and it seems as if they didnt know until the found it on some type of scribble paper.
I will absolutely never order from them again due to being absolutely incompetent....
