City Weekend says

When you open the door to this discrete izakaya, you'll feel as if you're entering a world of good cheer. Specials are written on fluttering strips of paper covering the walls. It's legendary among locals and Japanese for succulent yakitori, sublime cold soba and ramen and cheap Kirin beer. It may be a bit hard to find (make sure to keep the restaurant's telephone number handy), but once you do, you'll never want to leave.

still, despite the decline, this is still the best yakitori in Shanghai ... BY FAR

Agree with other reviewers that there has been a major decline! Used to be one of my favorites but last few times i've been, i find myself wondering why i keep going back. Not sure what happened, but the ramen isn't the same and the quality of the yakitori has sunk to level of local chinese bbq establishments. Really sad to see....

hmm, I don't think the quality has decreased. This is still a great middle of the night spot - just grilled yakitori, potent sochus and cold sapporo. yum.

For a foreigner who does not Japanese cuisine or style. This place gives what I imagine a Japanese atmosphere should be like comparing to others Japanese places (and often I am seating near a few Japanese Business men eating there as well) I went in Shanghai. I like the barbecue and especially the fish and mushroom, the soup noodle too. I don't know if it is the right Japanese taste but it is good.

i'm talking about the zhongshan park location (the original), not shuicheng lu (haven't been there for a few months)

agree. this is one of my regular spots, but I do agree that there has been a decline. Totally agree about the ramen, it's not ramen.

agree with the other reviews - unfortunately, the food is in decline. the shuicheng lu branch used to be one of my favorite restaurants in the city - great food, great cozy atmosphere, funky music, authentic flavors, great selection of sake, ice cold asahi on tap, good service and the added amusement of the midget door that inevitably gets a tipsy or careless patron or two each night right on the forehead.

the ramen used to be awesome, but that was a long time ago when they made real pork ramen broth slow cooked for hours and hours. the cold soba is still nice. the tuna jaw is still one of my favorites as are the chicken wings (too bad the chickens are getting smaller!). the jumbo prawns are cooked to perfection and the heads are just crispy enough to be crunchy and succulent at the same time.

The owner, manager, cooks and staff are all nice and make you feel at home. unless the food really slips, i think i'll continue to be a loyal customer. as for the price, i've walked out of there stuffed for RMB160 and i've also walked out of there RMB2200 lighter depending on how much and what kind of sake i'm drinking. either way, it's good value for the money.

lots of hype on this place. i have no clue on what how to order and just point at what others are eating. the food is not bad but it aint cheap to eat here either. personally not good value. i guess if you factor in the atmosphere its ok as its very japanese. lack of space between diners and a very small door.

Downhill alert!

Toriyasu had a long run as our clan's go-to spot for yakitori. The place seemed to have better quality ingredients than its competition. Nowadays there's a discernible decline.

The fried chicken, while still tasty, has shrunk in size. When we commented on the diminution to the waitress she remarked, "the chickens have gotten smaller." Also, the sausage skewers used to be really tasty and served with mustard on the side. Seems like they replaced the smaller-sized wieners with ones akin to the "hot dogs" with rubbery consistency sold by sidewalk vendors here. And now served alongside ketchup and cheaper mustard.

It usually takes copious amounts of yakitori to be satisfactorily sated (don't bother trying to load up with the ramen, it's one of the more mediocre items here), so I would say expect to spend more than Y100-Y199 per couple as indicated above. Either my stomach has double the capacity of your average person, or else these price guidelines are usually off the mark.
