City Weekend says

This trendy joint has the full range of Italian fare, an extensive wine list and some of the biggest pizzas in town. We especially like going for the quattro stagioni pie with their chocolate fondant (served in a teacup) to finish.

Nolita, on the re-gentrified Dagu Lu has, just like the street, a few good things to offer but also a couple off-balance dishes that lack that vital spark of energy. The restaurant is too bright, the music a little too clubby and the décor too chic to be a comfortable experience for everyone. Even the extensive menu is laced with a few over-egged quips in an endeavor to epitomize fine Italian cuisine. Our appetizers were also over-earnest. The eggplant rolls with Mortadella and mozzarella (RMB68) are a pleasant combination of the key elements, but it’s slightly too rich and peppery for well-executed Italian antipasto. Better was the clean, truffle-dressed beef carpaccio with Parmesan (RMB88). The heavy-flavors theme continues in the pastas. A pumpkin and caciocavallo cheese cappellacci with black truffle butter sauce (RMB78) is a creamy cacophony of cheesy and truffle flavours in which the delicate pumpkin ravioli struggles for a voice. The pizzas give their all and come through much better. Nolita’s 30cm quattro stagioni option (RMB98), featuring artichokes, parma ham, peppers and mushrooms, is among the best in town for value and quality. The base is superbly thin with a crisp crust. The slices do sag a little, but at this size we’re not complaining. Dessert offers a glimmer of ingenuity with a truly lip-smacking chocolate fondant (RMB48) served in a teacup à la mode. Why the cup? To ensure not a drop of the liquid chocolate oozes out and goes to waste. If you find yourself on Dagu Lu, Nolita offers a reasonably priced, or at least earnest, meal.[HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Reviewed in December, 2010.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Our rating: 3/5[HTML_REMOVED]

The lunch set will give you a chance to try the basics for under RMB100 per person. Decent service and quality. The upstairs seating was brighter than on the first floor.

I love the pizzas here. They are super thin and they do that minimalist topping thing which I love. Also, the service is fantastic. After the end of our meal there last Saturday they all gave us a round of limoncello. Superb.

A lot has changed since our last visit. Some re-decorating and shifting of tables to make more room; though, the effect is crampy and invasive, especially upstairs: too many tables too close to each other - to the point that neighbors can share food and dark secrets, and knock the drinks off tables as they are seating or unseating. New and tasty-sounding items on the menu.

The downstairs dining area was a cauldron - so hot that no one would sit there. Maybe that's why they have crammed so many tables upstairs, where it was just bearably hot.

The food was decent to good, but generally unremarkable - save for the massive salads that almost stopped us in our tracks. And the wet pizza. Fughettaboutit: the crust is so thin that it cooks and browns and crisps and fossilizes in moments, while the cheese never gets a chance. The outcome is soupgoop on crackers. Decent flavor, poorly matched textures, overcooked and undercooked.

Service was great, just like the last time. Same for desserts.

The music, still a big downside, was about as loud and sappy and cheezy as the last time.

Decent prices.

Nolita, a tipical Italian restautant, offer you south Italy cusines. The Pizza oven is huge and imported from Italy. The manager Domenico offered me a Prosecco. Right now downstairs just put some tables for wecloming guests who like to drink near the bar, but the scenery upstairs and outside is also cool. The price of food is decent. Good Nolita, wish you have a good future...

This place is definitely better than 3 stars. Had pasta, risotto, the cold cuts platter and two soups last night (RMB400 total). Thought it was some of the best casual Italian fare in town. Plus the interior is really comfortable, casual, the "hidden" level up top is great for a date. Only complaint was the music which went from Cyndi Lauper to Mandopop which was a little weird. Other than that, it's a really excellent resto.

Been there twice but no welcome proseccos on any of the visits. Attentive service staff and quality food made up for it. If you can, save room for desserts. They are delectable.

Nice " 2 glasses of prosecco welcome" from the boss as we arrived. The other highlights were the service from our waiter - attentive, friendly, responsive - the fresh and honest, though slightly undercooked pizza (the downside of arriving before the pizza oven was optimally heated?), the mushroom soup, the risotto, the affogato (vanilla ice cream drowned w/ espresso), which was beyond amazing, and a nice bottle of prosecco.

On the downside was the caesar salad, dominated by a nearly straight mayonnaise dressing and littered w/ olives (which is fine, but not caesarian). What is it about mayo dressings in Shanghai?! They are everywhere! An Italian restaurant boss would know better, though, huh? Speaking of, what's with the "Shanghai lasagna" - limp and wet as if steamed and lacking ricotta on the inside, mozzarella/parmesan on top, and tomato sauce everywhere. I keep asking myself "an Italian boss would......"

Another textbook Shanghai restaurant mistake was the spotty, erratic, and bizarre music selection and blaring volume - loud and louder (even when we were the only ones there). Pick a mood and stick with it! Not much fun being stuck upstairs, either. This is where the no-smoking section is and it feels sterile and far removed from the heart and soul of the restaurant. Some paintings up there would be nice, but it sure feels like punishment for not having an addiction.

Negatives aside, I want to believe in this place and, as the positives were sufficiently strong to give me confidence in Nolita, I will be back for sure - looking to see how far Nolita has come and to see if it has reached the potential I know is there.
