DaMarco's is a staple for Italian food in Shanghai. It's not my first choice when hungry, but a pizza from them always puts me in a better mood and keeps me heading back.
We didn't go and will NOT! I called three times and finally some girl answers in English and I politely ask if they had room for two within the hour and if we can make a reservation...she said... "You Cannot!"...I asked why and she says all booked...then silence. I hung up and will never go there...with attitude like that....they better serve food for the Gods everyday or it will catch up to their arrogance soon enough! Bust!
Bad experience- mediocre food (except the pizza, I'll give the pizza full credit), terrible ambiance, bad, inattentive and ill-trained service, and something bordering on an attitude problem amongst the staff.
Won't return- ever.
Went last night with the wife to see what all the fuss is about after the CW Readers Choice Award.
First of all the restaurant was a bit hard to find given the location inside of a hotel no external signage that we could detect. That said the decor and atmosphere was extremely pleasant and the place was bustling on a Sunday night.
A bit of complimentary bruschetta and bread basket gave a very nice first impression. We started the meal proper with the cold eggplant (aubergine) parmigiana which was nicely presented and delicious; I particularly liked the cheesy tomato ragout covering the very gently fried aubergine. But perhaps this starter set our expectations a bit too high. The sea bass ravioli did not seem to be made from fresh pasta, as it was somewhat tough and bland, and the accompanying shrimps/prawns were extremely gritty due to insufficient cleaning (and probably frozen as well).
That said, the pizza (parma ham) was superb--the most wonderfully charcoal-blackened crust I have seen in Shanghai, nicely thin and crunchy, with a terrifically tasty tomato and cheese sauce that reminded me of the best pizzas found in Italy (and America). It was particularly brilliant when hot and sizzling though of course lost a bit of its initial zing as it cooled down.
The service was surprisingly attentive and reasonably friendly.
For us, the jury is still out and we'll probably make another visit for the superb pizza (we thought it better than The Kitchen or any we've had so far in Shanghai) and to give the pasta another chance.
I'm not an expert on Italian food and I have not been to every Italian restaurant in the city, but this place is my favorite. Recently, friends and I had the ragout, parma pizza and shrimp risotto - all were very good. The risotto particularly so and I consider this a good litmus test for Italian restaurants. The staff was friendly and accommodating towards our child.
I recently ate here for the first time with a large group, and was very impressed with the decor and authenticity of the food. Unfortunately, the waiter didn't pay much attention to serving us and took forever to respond to asking for the check. By the looks of things, I'm not the first!
Pudong Location: HORRIBLE!
Da Marco, Best Italian in Shanghai?? Don't think so! No ambiance whatsoever--dead quiet restaurant--(sound system was "broken"), appetizer of mussels and clams was horrific--parasitic crabs found in the tiny, freezer-burned mussles and the clams were unbelievable gritty. Just nasty.
Veal Marsala arrived as a goopy, over-floured purple mess--sent it back and requested from the chef, who surprisingly visited the table, another selection w/ white wine sauce, that also arrived as a goopy mess, accompanied by a hot, wilted salad that was supposedly the "green vegetable" side. (He never did stop by the table to ensure the second entree was ok, although he was downstairs for a considerable amount of time--probably b/c he KNEW it was also sub-par!) Husband's dish was basic spaghetti, when menu stated something different.
In the meantime, we watched the waiter in the black glasses pick his nose for 10 minutes behind the counter in full view of the diners, while the guy making bread was eating his own dinner from a big white bowl so loudly that people were staring.
Alas, thought we'd try dessert..the 3 selections we ordered weren't available and finally settling on a third, were told 20 minutes later that it was also unavailable. Made the server take the after-dinner drinks off the bill which was a positive thing to note.
Horrible experience and we won't return, obviously. Highly recommend you avoid this place, as well! (and wasn't there supposed to be a complimentary glass of prosecco offered, as well?!)
I approve - good quality, "real" recipes, and a very good pizza! Definitely one of the best Italian restaurants in town - almost an institution I'd say. The only problem is the wine selection, I personally didn't like it, but maybe I'm just picky :)
I really like it here. I've been 3 times, I like the food, the atmosphere and it's affordable. :)
good value. not the best italian but definitely when you consider the atmosphere, price and food - it should be the top choice.
I really really want to give it 4 stars but a few things did make my farewell dinner gone so wrong.
First of, the seats are too cramp in tiny space such that if I move my chair, it bumped to the lady sat behind me. There was no space between table whatsoever.
Second, attitude of the staff. I’m unsure if she is the manager but she is westerner, blonde hair. My Chinese friend asked if they have chopstick. (Sorry, I know it is funny). She just yelled out of surprised (I didn’t recall whether she yelled ‘what’ or ‘sorry’). But it was loud enough to embarrass my friends. I think that female manager could/should have replied nicely that she didn’t have chopsticks. (of course, it’s not the restaurant’s fault they don’t have the chopsticks. But it is their fault to embarrass the guesses like that). My Chinese doesn’t have much experience dining in Italian restaurant. I told him that I like da marco very much thus we went there. Going forward, I will probably spread the word to local people how they look down on Chinese.
Third, we ordered anchovy pizza. It was wayyyyy too salty. Anyone who has health problem must be warned. They should have pulled of anchovy in small streak so that it wasn’t too salty in one bite. Maybe the chef didn’t taste it at all?
The appetizer looked like TRASH. It was the first item on the list, assorted appetizer, something like meat plate. But it’s like they scrape leftover meat into the plate, topped sloppily with cheese.
The other 3 pizza topping that we order were all soggy. Taste wise was okayish.
Seafood risotto was nice. The other fresh pasta dishes were too soft/over cooked.
Last but not least, while we were having the meal half way through, the waiter slid the bill on our table. Um, we didn’t ask for the check. I understand they need high turnover. But hey, we were having 2 pans of pizza , 2 half –finished pasta plates and a risotto. We didn’t expect to check very soon. WE ARE NOT PIGS that we could slurp their soggy pizzas in one go.
Anyone who want to have a unique dining experience, you are welcome to go there.

Went there twice. Good prices for the food.Unfortunately first time I was really disappointed with the Pizza which should be according to some reviews one of the best in Shanghai.Second time we got more luck but it was still not perfect.But the food for the prices is very good.One big minus for me non smoking section does not exist.
just a fair restaurant. food is so so but the value for money is high. if you're looking for some casual italian dining option, this could be one. but not a date - as there is bright lights everywhere!
Great pizzas, but not as amazing as everybody said. It's cool if you want to be in a crowdy atmosphere, and eat good food. The wine was cool 198 rmb for a bottle of red wine. But the pizza, number 10 was was just OK. But my girlfriend took the pizza parma ham and was reall happy. Go there to make your opinion.
hmmmm... always liked this place. Especially before they changed their menu.
So last night: Apps carpaccio: nice portion, fresh roquette underneath, generally good. salad caprese: the mozza was ok, the tomatoes were complete and utter crap, flavourless mush. Basil was equally flavourless. (a dousing of olive oil and a sprinkle of flaky salt over both apps would have been very welcome) Mains pizza: good crust, decent toppings. meat tortellini in 4 cheese sauce: this used to be a favourite. This time the meat filling was unpleasantly granular and had a strange flavour. The pasta exterior was tough, as if it had been cooked a long long time ago and then insufficiently reheated. They screamed poorly treated frozen industrial tortellini. The cheese sauce that used to be so uncutous was, well, not unctuous any more and significantly less cheesy. Dissapointing.
I don't know where City Weekend gets it's price estimates from, but I've just eaten at De Marco and the price was more than Y400 per couple, without including the wine (which was another y200 per bottle). Having said all that, I don't consider this restaurant expensive. Complimentary bruscetta and assorted breads and olive oil were served whilst we considered the menu. We shared 2 appetisers, Insalato Misto and a veal with tuna sauce, 2 mains, Sea Bass ravioli with prawns and fresh (cherry) tomato sauce (tasty) and Osso Bucco with saffron rissotto (very cheesy and salty but not much saffron flavour), plus a side of mixed grilled vegetables. Followed by 2 desserts, pear tart with ice cream and Tiramasu (yum, yum!). All washed down with a bottle of Riparosso Montepuluciano d' Abruzzo. The flavours were generally authentic, the service was mostly good ( I could see a black pepper mill at the service point, but none was offered when my meal was served). Unfortunately, as a late booking we were placed on a table in an area which strongly resembled a corridor, so I can't really comment on the atmosphere, ambiance etc. other than to say it seems like a popular place.
Both times I've eaten here, this place has been packed. And I'm always surprised to see so many Italians dining at DaMarcos. It seems it may be more authentic than we all thought. Even the Chinese hostess speaks Italian. A friend recommended steamed mussels and clams as an appetizer. Delicious. We split a large salad of endives and mixed greens and had a couple draft beers while gorging on sea bass ravioli and baked lasagna bolognese. The whole meal came in under 300 RMB. Not bad. I'd go back again in a heartbeat.
This is the benchmark of all Italian food in Shanghai. You can't beat the prices and portions combined with the consistent quality here. There is an excellent spread of items and there is something for everybody. The service is good and the wine prices are very reasonable. Clearly this is a place where the boss wants you to enjoy wine and dine without breaking the bank.
I went there with my foreign students.Good Italian food with reasonable price although it was crowded. I think i will recommend to my other students if they like Italian food.
Great restaurant!! Good italian food, affordable prices!! By the way the subway station near the restaurant is Jiang su road, not Zhongshan park.
The food here was pretty good. Ordered a salad, pasta, pizza and Ice cream for dessert. The pasta tasted the best out of all the dishes. The pizza wasn't terrible but nothing special. It was pretty packed downstairs but luckily they had seats upstairs although it was the smoking section. The service could have been a bit better but not bad. Nice, comfortable environment. The prices seemed about right except for the drinks. 330RMB for 3 people but 32RMB for a fairly small glass of orange juice seemed a bit much.
