City Weekend says

Decked in velvet and featuring a comfortable outdoor patio, this classic hole-in-the-wall pizzeria boasts 30+ varieties of hand-tossed pies. The pizzas are some of the best and thinnest in town, but the mains are worth trying as well.

Normally when a restaurant owner bellows “everything’s good!” it isn’t. Bella Mia’s big surprise is that it actually is.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]

It’s a surprise because all the forboding clues are there: a gaudy Venetian theme, a waitress who explains pasta varieties through charades, a dastardly no-free-water policy and timing that brings everything out together like dim sum.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]

But from the simple yet loaded menu we could only pick winners. The [HTML_REMOVED]whole grilled sea bass with baby new potatoes [HTML_REMOVED](RMB138) is understated, succulent and meaty. In the absence of ravioli we gave the hand gesture for[HTML_REMOVED] cavatelli [HTML_REMOVED](RMB88) a try. The robust, curled slices of pasta fit a self-supporting shrimp and cherry tomato sauce to a tee.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]

All these serve as fitting warm-ups for what is in contention for the best pizza in town. There’s only one way to do this: incredibly fresh dough, a wafer-thin base and a blisteringly hot oven. Bella Mia has all three as the[HTML_REMOVED] capricciosa[HTML_REMOVED] (RMB88), with parma ham, artichokes, mushrooms and mozzarella is heaven-blessed with a perfectly thin and crisp crust. It alone is worth returning for. There are another 20-plus topping options.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]

Desserts are far away from the unimaginative sorbet-in-a-lemon offered in other flashier Italian spots. The [HTML_REMOVED]mango Bavarian topped with chocolate[HTML_REMOVED] (RMB32) is well executed, light and full of flavor.[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]

Bella Mia, in the no man’s land between Hengshan Lu and Huaihai Lu, is a new go-to for good, affordable Italian. As owner, Varesano, struts around the courtyard chirping at diners he knows it: you’ll be back for more. Took a date to Bella Mia last night... very quiet as there weren't many guests, which I actually liked. I had the seabass carpaccio and parma ham pizza, both were excellent. My date had the ceasar salad, which was a no thrills salad. Service was great and attentive. Not sure it's the best pizza in Shanghai, but it was very good. I would certainly go back.

Great pizza indeed. I had a white pizza with ham, mushrooms, arugula and parmesan (called sfizioso I think) - light and delicious. Loved it. The dining room was somewhat chilly, but it was a particularly cold evening... Reservations are recommended as the place was at capacity on my Saturday night visit.

We went on a Saturday night and were initially a little apprehensive since the restaurant wasn't anywhere close to capacity. But the food turned out to be outstanding. Really high quality ingredients and high cooking standards made for an amazing evening out. The melon with San Daniele was generously draped with proscuitto, and the spaghetti alle vongole was perfectly cooked, studded with tiny clams and spiked just the right amount with garlic and hot pepper. Our thin crust pizza was also delicious. This is easily the best Italian we've had in China and is going on our regular rotation!

Lovely ambience whether you are dining inside or out. The service was one of the best that I had experience in Shanghai. While the pizza was definitely one of the thinnest I had in Shanghai, it didn't come out pipping hot. There was also lack of cheese when I start tearing out each piece and I cannot find the effect of strings of mozzerella clinging onto the pizza. The deep fried calamari were perfectly fried but a tad pricey for an appetizer at RMB118. Nevertheless, Bella Mia is still a perfect date place but I will still continue to find the perfect pizza place.

for pizza purists: easily some of the best in town! a clear case of simple is best - when u 've got the oven, the ingredients, the skill and the charm plus a great venue in a convenient location what more is there to say?

What a great restaurant. Excellent service from the staffs and owners. The owners are especially friendly which make the dining experience feels like eating at a local restaurant. The pizza was fantastic and at a great price. I can't help but RAVE about this place. Can't wait to come back.

This is a great restaurant at a fantastic location. Prices are very reasonable and you really get value for money. They use good ingredients and taste is wonderful. We had their lunch deal priced at RMB 88 - perfect. We spoke to the owners and their are very friendly people - served ud a dessert for free. This place beats Da Marco and Bella Napoli - far better value for money. I have been 10 years in Shanghai and I have never been happy with the Italian selection of restaurants but this one is a WINNER!
