This elegant gold and red wood dining room houses a fantastic open kitchen that doesn't hold back any secrets. Chefs bustle about marinating tandoori and kneading naan. Your taste buds will worship a bite of their creamy spinach with homemade cheese. These busy chefs are clearly doing something right.

Wnt there last night with 6 friends, food was good, service was good.
We had 6 starters, 5 main course meat dishes plus 2 vegetable dishes, bowl of saffron rice, 3 naan breads plus a couple of beers each, 1400 rmb for 7 people which nobody grumbled at.
I have been there probably 6 times now, and it's always been consistently good.

After having researched the best Indian restaurants in the city of Shanghai, and read countless reviews, we set our hearts on Vedas, in anticipation of an authentic curry with disregard for its price. Upon arrival at the restaurant, we were welcomed by polite stuff and escorted to a table. The fact that dishes were prepared by a native Indian chef assured us that our dinner would satisfy our high expectations. However, we were ambushed by great disappointment. Despite it being a very quiet night, with only us and another table, it took a while for our food to arrive.
The first dish that we tasted was the lentil soup (35 RMB), which was extremely bland and tasteless, even lacking the basic ingridient of salt. Without placing our judgements on our first dish, we proceeded onto the vegetarian samosas, which were, in fact, delicious and left us with positive anticipation of our forthcoming main courses. When we were served our three main courses, we couldn't wait to try them. Unfortunately, we were met by another unpleasant surprise. The chicken biryani (65 RMB) was not what we had expected and tasted just horrid. The lamb shank which was acclaimed the chef's speciality, although very tender, had a peculiar taste and was not worth our 78 RMB at all, since we barely touched it. Before coming to the restaurant, we had thought that it was impossible to spoil a curry which is not an intricate dish to cook, but Vedas proved us wrong. Chicken tikka masala was far too sweet and lacked any spice, tasting anything but a standard masala. To make matters worse, the cheese and garlic naans were mediocre and rather flavourless, let alone the tiny portion sizes. By the end of our disastrous dinner, we were relunctant to pay a single kuai for our bill in the amount of 444 RMB.
To sum up, the restaurant Vedas leaves much to be desired with its riduculously overpriced minuscule dishes. We happily welcomed Vedas to our list of places to stay well away from.

Vedas is slightly overpriced, it's true, but you get what you pay for here: delicious, well-done Indian food, attentive service, and great ambiance. I'm not sure if I am going to have to sell anyone on this place as it is just that solid - I have been here tons of times and never had a bad experience!

Ate here with a large group of friends last night. The Indian management was attentive and polite which was nice. Place is really clean and has a nice ambiance suitable for a date or just to have a few drinks and some appetizers. Will definitely put this place on my list of favorite Indian restaurants in Shanghai.

Had the opportunity to finally eat at Vedas last week. The Indian food here is amazing. Love their open kitchen and the quiet and cozy atmosphere of the place. Will definately return.

Tasty but certainly not mind-blowing. The chaat papri was good, if over-priced. The shahi paneer was also pretty yummy, but not as flavorful as the baingan bharta. The curries didn't come with rice and ordering multiples of naan (which isn't amazing naan) gets pricey-- though the portions are decent-sized. Not very spicy, but this seems to be endemic to Shanghai.

Has long been some of the best Indian food in Shanghai - though a bit expensive. The dining experience is heightened by a beautiful interior and viewable kitchen. Getting take-out via Sherpa's is good if you can't be bothered to venture out.

The restaurant should update its website - Sunday brunch is neither a buffet, nor 125 RMB/person. It's150/person and I wasn't clear whether or not it was all you can eat based on the format, since they just sort of bring the plates to you. The earlier appetizers were good but the curries really needed more flavor. Full review and pictures at: http://blog.57575777.com/thediningsecretary/2010/03/07/vedas-brunch-verdict-needs-some-spice/
Still serving up some of the most authentic Indian fare in the city; went last night and every dish was spot on. Add the atmosphere and some cold Kingfishers - you can't go wrong.

Indian food is our favourite cuisine and we've eaten at tens of restaurants all over the globe. We've eaten out at Vedas a number of times and generally had tasty food for a semi-reasonable price. However delivery is another story..... the first time we'd ordered Vedas the food was mediocre - certainly not as tasty as when at the restaurant itself. But we recently ordered delivery again and had a horrible experience. We'd ordered the pindi channa, the bhindi okra, the palak paneer, roti's, garlic naan, and vegetable biryani. While the pindi channa and the rotis were okay I'm sorry I ever tasted the other dishes. Disgusting!! The bhindi okra was so saturated with oil, they were shriveled up little stubs that tasted like nothing except grease - completely indigestible. The palak paneer was an indistinguishable and unappetizing blob of goo, like a flavourless spinach and cream cheese dip, the few cubes of paneer not even well cooked. The naan was not light, flaky and tasty, but rather heavy, and the vegetable biryani, while tasty, was too greasy. Also generally not spicy enough. Almost instantly after this unappetizing meal (and WAY overpriced - almost 500RMB for such a mess) I was very sick..... we will never order delivery from here again and it even taints our in-restaurant experiences.

Over-rated. It's ok, not bad...that is all. There are much better Indian restaurants in Shanghai

Really good food. My colleague from India liked it a lot.
I've been a few times now and it's consistently good. Portions aren't huge, making it a bit expensive as mentioned by others.
Expensive but well worth it. Very nice atmosphere though a bit dark; the spiciest vindaloo I've had in China.
The tandoor chicken and lamb chops are incredibly tender - highly reccomended.
Oh, and if you order the garlic nan be prepared, I think they used about three heads of garlic when making ours.

I couldn't agree more. This place isn't cheap but it's definitely worth it. I don't find the tandoori spicy enough but it is very well spiced, not in the sense of quantity but in the balance of the spices. The black dal (dal makhani I think) was buttery and delicious, tamarind rice was very good, chaat papri to start was great and actually used black salt (a sort of sulpherous tasting seasoning that restaurants rarely dare use as it's a bit funky), I didn't find the samosas earth shattering but that's ok. Great nan too. This, and one of the most professional and charming waitresses in Shanghai (although one of the other girls was a bit, brisk).

I love restaurants that feature the kitchen. The decor, the wine and of course, the food was really spot on. Thanks to the CW Dish columnist who recommended this great Shanghai Indian restaurant. Keep winning awards!

Great food, good service, so far best indian food ive eaten in shanghai so far.
