City Weekend says

This sophisticated Hunan restaurant has become somewhat of an institution among foreigners thanks to its exquisitely prepared dishes. Electrify your tongue with the chili-sprinkled ribs and open-faced fish. Finish with sweet, sticky banana balls. Milder eaters gravitate toward the equally delicious non-spicy menu offerings.

I love spicy Hunan food. And Gu Yi is the place to get it. Two thumbs way up for this place, except for the long lines to get in.

No matter how many other restaurants i get to know and try in Shanghai, I always go back to Guyi, it is the best restaurant in town, the food is incredible, the taste unforgetable and after the first visit you will always go back for more. I have been living for 5 years in Shanghai, I have been uncountable times to Guyi and I never had anything to complain about, love it!!

Well, it was my favorite Hunan restaurant, that was until three weeks ago. I took a bunch of buddies and ordered my usual spread from array of cold dishes to ever so favorite spicy ribs and skewered shrimps. One bite into the first cold dish (can't remember the name), I knew it tasted different than it used to be. It was pretty much the same pseudo spicy food one after the other from that point on.. A few of my buddies still liked the place..but as a long time Guyi lover, I knew it was missing what separates the great food from just another food. Very disappointed.. I know there's another location opened recently near Jing'an Temple area.. I will give it just one more try at the new location, hoping that the chef from the original location moved over to the new one.

this is more a place for those that care more for the atmosphere more than the food. dont get me wrong, the food isnt bad but for the price and wait there are better options out there.

Good Food, but more expensive than the 99rmb per couple if you order those ribs (22rmb per rib?!) or any of the appetizing main dishes. many of them range around 50rmb, which for hunan food is very expensive. even di shui dong (also pricey for what it is) is cheaper.

went to the one on Nanjing lu.... which for some reason City weekend has not updated yet.

This place is always packed full of people. Before to make reservations.

Service was typical Chinese and the food was pretty good Hunan food.

This places food is no longer worth the wait! How can I put it. Its WESTERNIZED. The la ji ding, (fried spicy chicken with peppers), has no bones anymore! Its like a McNugget now! The ribs I use to order all the time have become dryer and dryer. The tiger beer girl was truely annoying. I've been going to this place for 4 yrs and never again.

Usually if you go on the weekday, it's not too crowded and you'll be seated super quick. I went on a Tuesday night and had no wait at all.

Ordered the ribs, spicy chicken and bamboo shoot hot pot/grill, and some greens and for dessert the glazed banana balls. Everything was good. The ribs here are juicier than Di Shui Dong, a must try as well.

Prices are kind of steep, like... 200RMB/couple basically, for 3 dishes and dessert. WAY MORE if you order seafood. (Add another 100RMB+)

Nothing to say about this restaurant except for the long queue, but that's make our appetite more and more excited. Gu Yi has a nice food , nice environment and it's cheap according to the taste and the position of this restaurant at the city. It's worth it.

This Fumin Lu favorite serves up a mean chicken and bamboo shoot hot pot, spicy and delicious. You don't have to devour the hot peppers like we do, but you'll definitely be devouring the rest.

good food. Not as spicy as I expected. Ribs and the spicy chicken rocks!!! The only bad experience is the tables were set too close to each other and there was no non-smoking section. 2 tables on both sides of mine contained many big smokers. So had to leave the poor last piece of rib and left the restaurant as soon as possible. Guess it just happent everywhere in China

the stars: ribs, that open-faced fish with lots of green chili, and those decadent banana balls.

Worth the Wait I have been told many times in China that the way to judge whether or not a restaurant is good is by how many people are waiting to get in. At Gu Yi, I'm one of the ones with my nose to the glass waiting to get a spot and am never disappointed. This restaurant is a great choice if you're looking for an authentically spicy experience.
