This German heavyweight is perpetually bustling with an easy-going crowd. Sit upstairs next to the cozy fireplace or plant yourself downstairs if the brew pub atmosphere is more to your liking. Imposing portions of gravy-soaked meats and potatoes, homemade breads, sausages and well-poured beers aim to please.

went there with two other friends on a monday night to celebrate oktoberfest this year and i was also craving for some good german beer and PORK KNUCKLE!! was hoping to relieve the time i had in munich.. so we went to this place and found a hidden gem.. we didnt expect this restaurant to be in a place filled with restaurants serving international cuisines! its called LAO WAI JIE.. how appropriate.. however it was rather inaccessible to get there..
enough said, on to the menu.. we ordered a serving of pork knuckle and a monday promo of free flow all you can eat beef set.. apparently they have specials from mon-fri and it so happens that the promo for pork knuckle was on a thursday.. the beef set that we ordered came with a house brewed beer which tasted quite alright for a german beer.. it costs us about 148rmb? and the pork knuckle set was about 128rmb.. on top of that we also ordered a jug of Weizenbier.. for the three of us.. it was meat OVERLOAD that night.. well the pork knuckle was not that awesome as the skin was not as crispy as i have expected but the meat was tender.. the mash potatoe side that came with it was average too.. i was expecting too much i guess.. the beef set that we ordered had some kind of vege stuffed in the middle and the taste was good at first.. but too much of it is just awful..
it was not as crowded as we would have expected it since it was oktoberfest but probably coz they do not have much celebration for it at that time.. the service was pretty awesome though as the staff made it a point to make u feel at home and create small talks.. overall i would rate my experience there 7/10. but if u are looking for authentic german food experience u might be a teeny bit disappointed..

My husband and I went to Papas once for dinner to try German food. We did not like the food there. It was heavy and did not taste very fresh. The main "positive" thing about the food is that the portions were large, German-size. The atmosphere at Papas was a bit like what we imagine from a place in Germany. It was not crowded when we were there, which we prefer. But I am not sure if not crowded means anything about the place. We noticed that Papas now makes beer. Two kinds were available when we were there. My husband tried it and said it doesn't taste great, quite bland like water. They told him the clumps on the bottom of the beer is normal for fresh, but we had never had clumps on the bottom of the beer at microbreweries back home.
My friends and I go to different restaurants for different purposes. And Papa's Bierstube has a very important one.
After a crazy night of clubbing, the next day, when we wake up at about 2-3 pm, we come here, whether to cure a hangover or not, we come here. The food here immediately cures a hangover, there's just something about it. It must be the massive portions and the amount of sauce and the really nice potatoes that give your a starch boost. And sometimes we have a beer. The beer here is noticeably cheaper than Blue Frog or Big Bamboo, and there are more varieties. And most of the time, we play pool, and because there usually aren't people there during our after party grub runs, we don't have to wait for the pool table to empty up.
I rarely come here at night, but from what I've heard and what I've seen so far, it can get really fun.

I have been reading quite some reviews about the Hongmei venues. As we live close by we are frequently in Hongmei Pedestrian Street. Not all the restaurants which are always full are always good as well, and vice versa. For Papas I have to admit that lots of people stand for good quality, friendly service and good value for money. We go there regularly and were basically always happy with food, drinks and service. They have a fairly huge menu and all of it is good! I am a really huge fan of their place even though there will always be people dissagreeing with me... there are just too many jerks on the streets these days :)

Hi guys, haven't been in Shanghai for quite a while, but now I'm back! We were at the Beerfestival in Papas too, but it was not on a monday. Usually they have it on Friday to Sunday, but as there were holidays this year they did it on Wednesday to Friday. When we were there on Thursday and Friday there were quite some people in Dirndl and Lederhosn and it was fun. They expanded their games this year and I heard that next year they are getting a traditional German band over. Anyhow, Geangoh might have been on another day, but then he might not have enjoyed the Beerfestival. As for their food, we are there very frequently and I also have to admit, that they are not always same good. Sometimes the potatoes ar a little salty, but over all they are still one of the most steady cooking restaurants on the street. I have to admit, that I can live with a little weaving food, because shit happens and everybody can make mistakes. That is why their stuff is authentic and home made. With their service it is the same. Sometimes you even see the waitress aproaching your table and you think "that must be a new girl" or "better wait for another waitress", but you can also ask. Anyhow we were always served nicely and the food was always good. The thing with food and service is also that you have a daily changing personal expectation which sometimes just cannot be fulfilled. When we are in a group and all are happy we are just much easier with mistakes, but when I come from work had a lot of trouble during the day, my patience is fairly low anyhow and then everything seems to be crap. So give it another try and check the others too. There is a lot of good food on Hongmei - not really so much the americans, but the traditional restaurants with the owners from the countries... :) Cheers, Camilla
