City Weekend says

Traditional French cuisine finds a home in the former French Concession. The menu harks back to the heyday of Shanghai, offering home-cooked favorites like bacon-wrapped codfish and fresh cheese fetucelle noodles in a congenial, Art Deco atmosphere. Enjoy a glass of wine while immersing yourself in the ambiance and cuisine of a bygone era.

Le Cygne is intended to be a fusion of Chinese and French cuisine. Ask the owner and he will tell you about a time when this kind of food was the height of foreign cuisine in Shanghai.

This is indeed a Chinese / Asian interpretation of French cuisine ^_^ However, the food is quite good. It actually reminds of the Hong Fangzi on Huai Hai Zhong Lu back in the years 2002 - 2003. Certainly worth paying a visit from time to time...

This is one local yokel masquerading on Jinxian Lu as a french restaurant. Entrees took a good part of an hour - were they hunting for the snails in the garden? Potato salad with chunks of spam? Disappointing is an understatement. Got to agree with the above - too many great new restaurants in Shanghai to try to ever go back!

Very good cuisine. Perfect presentation, excellent value and what a good meal !! Lobster bisque is delicious and the chocolate hazelnut cake is marvelous - looks like a picture in a magazine! Highly recommended for special occasion for people with limited budget!

I went there 2 weeks ago...the place was quite nice and retro but the food was really nothing to write home about, totally unmemorable...actually my apetizer was particularly bad (cheese farfelle turned out to be spagetti a la carbonara...). This is a French restaurant catering to the Chinese....or probably what some Chinese may consider to be french food....it's not that it's bad....it's just very boring! The worst part was the music...they were playing Julien Clerc and although I have nothing against 'Le Chevre", they did play the same cd 4 times in a row...there are too many good restaurants in Shanghai to give this one a second try.

Cuisine a la Maison

This newest entry in the French food market references Shanghai's time-honored infatuation with French cuisine. But instead of harkening back to the heady days of colonial yore, Le Cygne points to the decades after Liberation when Tian E Ge, a restaurant on Huaihai Lu, gave many older Shanghailanders their introduction to Western cuisine. Le Cygne's menu, helmed by chef Serge Alain Gros, borrows from its (now departed) namesake a passion for French-inspired home cooking. For starters, try the rillette (RMB48), a pork paté that is fantastic when paired with the sweet onion marmalade, then go for the mushroom soup (RMB58). Though not on the menu, this simple purée of mushrooms and cream accented with an inventive drizzle of chocolate will have you unabashedly licking the bowl. Mains run the gamut, but we loved the bacon-wrapped codfish (RMB237)–succulence incarnate. The light and flaky fish works wonders with the savory goodness of marinated pork. Unfortunately, it's also not on the menu, so you'll have to ask for it. Nostalgia buffs should try the cheese fettucelle (RMB78), flat Italian noodles smothered in cream and topped with cheese baked till golden brown. A staple of the old Tian E Ge, it was once one of the most popular Western dishes in Shanghai. The only misstep was the Delice du Cygne dessert (RMB58). The sugary sweetness of the cake overpowers the raspberry pairing, and the raspberries on ours were more frozen than not. Le Cygne isn't out to awe diners with elegance. Service is attentive but discreet; the interior is casual but stylish. The dining space is open, the ceilings are partially unfinished and the round, leather-backed booths come with plenty of colorful cushions. All in all, it works towards a welcome informality–which makes haute cuisine here that much more enjoyable. Lee Mack
