As we strode through the Puli Hotel’s bamboo-lined entrance, we knew we were in for something special. From the tantalizing menu to the elegant place settings, Jing'an's attention to detail is evident. We took advantage of the prix fixe lunch (¥188 for two courses, ¥220 for three) to try out their gourmet fare. Sliced pink salmon cured pastrami-style were topped with flecks of crunchy beetroot, bread crisps and drizzles of sweet, fresh beetroot purée.

The fish sat alongside a thick slice of duck liver parfait blended topped with a red-wine marinated poached egg. The ingredients came together in a wonderful balance of sweet, savory and fresh. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we sank our teeth into a Tasmanian beef burger on a fluffy brioche bun with Taleggio cheese, velvety foie gras, a tower of crunchy fries and a little pot of homemade ketchup with a hint of lemon juice. The quality extended all the way to dessert. We enjoyed a zesty, creamy lemon curd pie with a hazelnut biscuit crumb crust with browned meringue tips and matching lemon sorbet.

With a perfect mix of seasonal, local and international ingredients combined so creatively, we see exactly why people have been raving about this restaurant.

Beautiful place. Sleek, modern design. Dim light. Big windows. Great place for a date, a business meal, to impress someone. Food was really good and you must try their imported butter. Service was good as expected in a 5* hotel. Can't remember the dishes we ordered but we were all satisfied...that is until we got the check. Prices are definitely very high. Add the 15% service charge and boum ! Though the place and food is great there is no wow factor. Nothing really exciting though it makes for a really nice evening that could hardly go wrong

After reading plenty of rave reviews over the past few months about the unique and alternative dishes at Jing'an, I finally decided to try it out. Maybe it was the build up that left me disappointed, and maybe the time I went just had a menu much less exciting then normal, but immediately after walking into a completely empty restaurant on a Friday night I regretted my decision to go there to splurge. The food was vey good, no doubt about that, but the dining experience as a whole, lacked the excitement that I had expected. I expected unique and exciting dishes, but received expensive yet standard fancy food. Call me picky, but I went there because I wanted to try something different, not what I can get in every other 5-star hotel.

So the food, yes it was definitely great quality. Both of the salami boards were incredibly flavourful and juicy, and with a little lemon and salt it was quite a treat. The pasta also had a surprisingly powerful smoky flavour paired with tender shrimps and the turbot dish was also cooked perfectly, yet I actually forget what went with it. Guess it wasn't that memorable... The dessert was definitely the most exciting item. A five spiced panna cotta with dates and oranges, a little difference went a long way.

I left this place actually wondering if it was the same restaurant I had read about. Has it just gone downhill or something?

Wow, a lot of people with money to burn... 398 RMB plus service or 596 RMB plus service per person.

I'm going to give it a try, but I swear, if it's not up to par expect all the positive reviewers to pay for it.

Another fan of their fabulous Sunday brunch. After living in Shanghai for a few years, we start to get spoiled and Sunday brunch invites become a bit .. meh? Those champagne brunches all start to blend together. But Jing'an has re-awakened my love for the ultimate Sunday indulgence. The food is absolutely the best, not to mention the wonderful dignified service and for me, is one the best places to while away a sunday afternoon.

I think it wasn't so bad. Have not been there for quite sometime. But some months ago, had a wonderful dinner with my clients there. I tend to bring Chinese people to dine there... My guests are often impressed by the food and the atmosphere.

The Jing'an brunch has been on the top of my "things to do" list for over a year now and I finally got the chance to cross it off last Sunday. Straight up, this was one of the best brunches I have had in Shanghai. The brunch service in the restaurant is the perfect hybrid of buffet and a la carte dining. My two mains from the menu, the spinach eggs benedict and the pancakes, were near perfect. My only gripe was that I had to ask for more maple syrup, but I blame that on my sweet tooth. Along with the amazing food, the service was flawless, the restaurant is gorgeous and I never had to ask for a refill on my Champagne (which is crucial for Sunday brunching). I will definitely return for more.

Hmm... I also didn't have that great of an experience at Jing'An... at least our food was hot but our drinks also took way too long! We booked for Restaurant Week, so we could pick between 3 dishes for each of our 3 courses.... except they were out of the duck breast that we both had wanted. We ordered our drinks at least 10 minutes before we ordered our food. While my boyfriend was done with his salmon/beetroot 'sorbet' appetizer and I was halfway through the dense liver parfait that was wrongly paired with a buttery piece of garlic toast, our drinks arrived. Then we had to ask twice for some extra bread to go with the rich pate. The good thing was that we didn't have to wait long (or at all!) between courses because everything was prepared. Beautiful restaurant and hotel, I just hope that the regular menu is better than what was offered for Restaurant Week. But then again, why would I go back and pay full price + 15% when the first visit failed to impress??

Great place a business lunch. Took two clients here last week and both were impressed with the venue and fit-out. Prices while steep but do match the decorum. Set lunch allows the choice of 2 or three courses. Each course was small in proportion but perfect size for lunch when you don't want a food coma to follow. Simple dishes like Caesar salad had a nice upscale twist. Soups were rich and creamy. Gnocchi was fluffy and tender. Hot dishes were severed on hot plates; a key element in fine dining establishment.

There's too much buildup to this restaurant. The hotel is beautiful, the decor is immaculate, but the food is not up to par. Sure, I enjoy quality pricey food, but this restaurant is just pricey. I do give props to a creative menu, and the modern minimalist style (aka portions are pretty small). 55 kuai vegetables were worth about 10 and were as good as my ayi's cooking. And the tuna belly came in a can.

I can add to all the positive comments about the food and the place itself, which provided a warm atmosphere. The food was excellent (scallops as an appetizer, wagyu beef with some side dishes as a main). Alone: for 5 stars I was missing a more attentive service. They were all always very friendly but pretty busy, you did not have the feeling, that they were serving YOU, contact was rare - in fact, I always refilled my glass of wine by myself (which is ok in a 3 star restaurant). They offered some more bread, which never arrived. Still: a good place to go.

We enjoyed our meal at Jing An Restaurant. The food was delicious. Very creative menu. It shows how good 'fusion' can be. The bowls and silverware and other touches are lovely. The only drawback is that several items on the menu were not available.

Jing 'An Restaurant, Puli Hotel

How was my 1,995.98RMB anniversary dinner (for two) last Saturday? The food was cold. Need I say more? Oh, but I will. The food was COLD! If it was really busy, I might be more forgiving, but the place was practically empty on a Saturday night. Yet my wife's dinner, my dinner, and the adjacent table's dinner (I overheard) was COLD. For some reason, the only other diners that I saw that night were seated at the table next to us, but there is a lot of space between tables.

I had high expectations from reading a few previous reviews, and the dinner started out nicely. The maitre d' was friendly and seemed competent. But it was down hill from there. The waitstaff pretty much vanished.

The worst part is, during our two plus hours there, no one came by and asked how the food was. The adjacent table was asked by the maitre 'd, and I over heard them saying that their food was tepid. At least they got to express themselves, and probably (rightfully) should have an item removed from the bill, or a complimentary dessert. But they did not ask me. I must live with the memory of Jing 'An Restaurant's expensive, COLD DINNER.

Service, you may have guessed by now, was not professional. Not bad for a casual jeans-t-shirt kind of place, but completely inexcusable for a 2000RMB meal! Again, the place was practically empty of guests, so there really is no excuse. Our servers did not even know how to serve from the left, remove from the right. The maitre d' made the same error. I asked one server where the white bowls are from (I really liked the little white bowls). She snorted and mumbled something. I said, "Sorry, what?", and she laughed again and said what sounded like 'I don't know'. Sorry, but when I'm paying 2 grand for dinner, I expect professional service. They also left our empty plates on the table for way too long. I also had to twist around several times when I wanted to order a bottle of water, for instance. For these prices in a 5 star hotel, I shouldn't have to work so hard, or be so disappointed.

Normally, I would wait until I was asked how the food was, and then I would politely mention that it was cold. But on my anniversary dinner, I just didn't want to get into it, as it seems the staff didn't seem to care either way. So I let it go.

Last negative comment, when I made reservations, I specifically said it was my anniversary. I don't expect anything special, but at every other serious fine dining restaurant, when I've mentioned a birthday or some kind of celebration, the dessert would come with a candle, or a complimentary glass of Champagne would be offered. I can't deduct points for failing to acknowledge this special day, but certainly Jing'An missed an opportunity for extra points. Especially considering the cold food and amateur service.

A far as the taste of the food, temperature notwithstanding, it was just so-so. Pretty on the eyes, obviously a lot of thought went into the prep and execution. The Foie gras with chocolate was interesting, light but rich. Salmon pastrami was... interesting. Cod fish fillet was so-so. Monk fish - rubbery, and reminded me why I rarely order Monk fish. Did I mention it was all cold? The only greens available as a side was sauteed broccoli (which was actually the only dish not cold).

Tasting plate of desserts was nice. One warm cider cocktail, two glasses of Taittinger Rose, Pellegrino, side of brocolli and french fries, complimentary dish of chocolates/sweets. Two grand. Cold food. Amateur service. No one there cared if we were enjoying ourselves or not. Oh, that 2000 includes a 15% service charge. I guess if I want hot food and better service, I need to pay extra?

As we made our way out, it was lonely. No one to bid us farewell, and thanks for coming. Maybe they were too embarrassed about serving cold food?

Which is all too bad, because the space is absolutely gorgeous. Modern yet warm, romantic, spacious. But decor hardly compensates. I guess my search for a really great fine dining restaurant in my 'hood will have to continue.

Jing'An Restaurant is definitely a must-try! From the simple bread paired with their special butter (salty or plain) to their selection of appetizers, main courses (hand chopped beef and duck yolk ravioli) and desserts; everything on the menu seems to be uniquely different from other restaurants. Great service, charming ambiance...This fine-dining is top notch!

The appetizer selection is not the ordinary choices you get... very different choice of ingredient and flavor pairing. Such as the black ravioli with crab and butterscoth. The dessert is also very unique, love the Chocolate parfait with balsamic and strawberry. Another plus point is that the location in JingAn area as as there's not many good western restaurant around the area.

Jing'An Restaurant is a place where you will enjoy a memorable meal through a multi-dimensional, emotional and sensorial experience, where the chefs are obsessive about every culinary detail and the fundamental technique that delivers a journey around the best products mother earth has to offer. Jing'An Restaurant will feature a quintessentially Western menu with selected Asian flavours at times, through an unusual modular menu where diners can combine individual components to tailor-make their own dish. Resolutely epicurean.
