Shanghai's first Swiss restaurant offers up a wide range of traditional favorites from the alpine nation. Drop by for some fine meats from their charcuterie board or indulge in some of the city's best fondue or raclettes--either way you'll be sure to get you fill on cheese.

Serious cheese! The spicy fondue was delicious- perfect for a wet Shanghai winter. The mushroom truffle roesti (like a giant latke) was also yummy, if a bit intense. I would've loved a salad but the garden salad seemed a little sad and possibly not dressed. Service was outstanding- attentive but not smothering. Prices are a bit high, but good cheese is so worth it.

Claire, "I had one of the best bowels of muesli I've had in Shanghai so far. It was grainy, fruity and came covered in a natural yogurt." I think that you might have given us just a smidge too much info about the effect of the muesli on your system :D

I stopped by the restaurant on Sunday for the first time and was very impressed. The food was incredible and I had one of the best bowels of muesli I've had in Shanghai so far. It was grainy, fruity and came covered in a natural yogurt. The yogurt was slightly tart but it came topped with slices of apple which sweetened the dish - it was amazing. I really liked the decor of the restaurant as well. It's very modern but still felt really cozy somehow. They also had great beats playing as well. I will definitely be back during winter...

Hmm was going to go tonight, but I guess you guys are closed for till ~ 17th of August? Good thing I called ahead.

Nice restaurant with good cheese fondue - both bread and potatoes could be better quality. We tested both versions, the normal one and the spicy. My companion preferred the normal version, while I liked the spicy very much. Our conclusion was: sharing both versions like we did, is probably the best ;-) The appetizers, foie gras and radish salad, were excellent. Definitely a nice place, if you want to have a different food than normally. I'll guess, I'll come back during the FIFA championship, when they will provide football matches on TV.

Chalet Suisse is open and running as it has always been since Feb 1st 2010! We close every mondays, but open every other nights from 5.30pm till 11pm. Lunch is only served on Saturdays and Sundays, 11am to 2.30pm.

Walked by here twice last week, both times shut for business at 8pm. RIP
great place! and the cheese fondue is gorgeous!

New Eats | Super Swiss?
After the success of his converted-villa restaurant Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen, Philippe Huser has created the rustic Chalet Suisse. For a taste of the Alps in Jing’an, this restaurant hits the spot, though there are creases to be ironed.
The décor is straight from the mountains–all untreated pine and cozy lighting. It’s a bit more sauna than chalet, but still fun. With decent cheese, it’s hard to get a fondue wrong. Trouble is, decent cheese in China is expensive and so prices here are a touch high–the Gruyère and Tête de Moine fondue is ¥175 and only comes with bread for dipping. The all-you-can-eat raclette (¥198) comes with the standard boiled potatoes, pickled onions and gherkins, and the welcome additions of pickled broccoli and chili. Sadly, there are no tabletop griddles so you don’t get the pleasure of cooking it yourself. For a break from the cheese, try the veal sausage with roesti (¥95). The meat is light and the roesti crispy yet creamy, with a mustard sauce that doesn’t overpower.
Frustratingly, many dishes listed are not yet available, including the meat fondue. A delayed freezer delivery is the cause, apparently, but why leave them on the menu? The service, while friendly, was not perfect, with plates arriving piecemeal and one not arriving at all. But judging by the level of service offered at Napa, Huser knows a thing or three about running a restaurant, and with a new Swiss manager starting soon, these problems should be limited.
Fondue is a sociable dish and this is a sociable restaurant. The wine is good and the cozy setting lends itself to convivial meals lasting late into the evening.
