I’ve been ordering from Urban Soup KItchen for about a year now and have eaten at the restaurant a couple of times. Their quality and offerings have stayed consistent over time. When you are craving homemade soup - this hits the spot!

On chilly cold days, in my humble opinion, there’s nothing better than a nice hot bowl of soup. On a suggestion, I decided to try Urban Soup Kitchen, near Xintiandi.
The little restaurant, with only a couple of tables, does most of its business via take-out and delivery via Sherpas. Not only soups, Urban Soup Kitchen also features sandwiches and salads. One glance at the menu, it’ll seem if your at your favorite lunch place at home in the US.
Today, we decided on a Cauliflower Cheese Soup, Tomato Garlic Soup, the BLT, and a Roasted Chicken Salad. The pipping hot soups came out first, with the cheese on the side for the cauliflower one. The tomato soup look rich and appetizing with the bright orange color. It had a grainy look with the bits and pieces of the tomato and garlic. Wonderful in taste, it did not feel heavy. This was my favorite, that afternoon. The cauliflower soup with the cheese was an interesting mix. Though there was not a lot of flavor, the texture had some appeal. I didn’t think the cheese was needed much.
The BLT and the salad soon arrived. I like the simple sandwiches such as the BLT, but unfortunately, the I wouldn’t have chosen a large bread roll for the BLT. The large encompassing crust was almost overkill with just bacon, tomato, and some lettuce. Outside of the crust, I liked the BLT. The roast chicken salad was really nice. Miss Y had picked wisely. The abundant chicken with the fresh lettuce contrasted well. I liked how it didn’t have too much heavy dressing. But what else can you say about a chicken salad?
Look for Rick, the owner, making sure his soups, sandwiches, and salads reminiscent of the tastes back in the states. Though I was critical of the the cauliflower soup and BLT, I would definitely return to Urban Soup Kitchen.

Yes! Save my life. Nothing beats the cold like big bowl of soup from Urban Soup Kitchen. Sure, it's a small restaurant, but I make sure to hit it up on an off hour, and I usually get the place to myself. Honestly, I don't know why I didn't think of hitting this place up as soon as the cold weather came to Shanghai.

i love the rosemary focaccia here and that they offer whole wheat ciabatta. my favorite sandwich is the chicken breast and i highly recommend asking for cheese (no additional charge).

Great selection of soups and their wraps are tasty with crisp FRESH ingredients. However, compared to when I last went there a year ago, I feel their value-for-money has declined a tad. The mushroom beef soup didn't have the smooth creamy texture I recalled and prices have notched upward. They still have a combo special but not compelling enough to make me as much of a repeat customer as before.
It's a great place for a soup & sandwich lunch. For vegetarians, the grilled vegetable sandwich or wrap is a good choice; it's flavourful and made with decent bread (I chose whole wheat ciabatta). There's a few vegetarian soups to choose from, such as tomato garlic and ginger carrot. I found the tomato soup to be on the tart side but fresh tasting.
I also tried the chicken mulligatawny (there's also a veggie version), but it's less like the traditional mulligatawny with lentils and more like a curry-flavoured chicken rice soup. Not too bad in flavour and texture.

The place is very small (only 4-6 small tables), and get filled up quickly during lunch rush. So I usually called for delivery. Very good food (love their mulligatawny soup and chicken breast sandwich), and with their 'half-price soup combo', I bow down to USK. Thank you guys and please keep up the good work!! Good luck!

Good deal the combo , i had pastrami wrap and a mulligatwny soup, real homemade stuff!!! a must try.

I love a good soup but the name of this place is misleading. My (cold) grilled veggie sandwich is the only thing saving this place from getting 0/1 stars, but my "chicken noodle soup" came with 4 noodles, less than 1/8 cup of shredded chicken, and a few really sad mushrooms floating on top. Maybe I just chose wrong that day, but I don't understand what the fuss is...

Came across this little shop last week on my way to Xintiandi and grabbed a copy of the takeaway menu. And it came in handy when I wanted to stay home for lunch. Ordered a goulash, a Ham Mushroom Sandwich and some sides.
Loved the goulash and chicken wings, they were fantastic. Really felt like a home-cooked meal at home. Total bill was around RMB70 which is reasonable.
Delivery is free within 3km and minimum order is only RMB45. Great!!

After reading all the positive reviews, I gave them a try.. and I agree with them 100%... We ordered roasted pumpkin and carrot ginger soups - both thick and hearty, exactly the way I like it (and perfect for this insanely cold weather). Also had beef pastrami sandwich and roasted chicken breast sandwich, which were both great (portion of meat was very generous). I'm starting to love these small shops operated by expats in Shanghai, and it seems to be the trend now. It's obvious that their overheads are low enough, so that quality of food is maintained at such low price. Nice.

I had been a USK fan for a while, but only ordered delivery. I went there for pick-up yesterday, and found out they recently renovated their shop, and now there are a few small tables for dine-in customer... GREAT JOB! I love the new space, nice and cozy. Tried the new "mulligatawny" soup... wow... it was amazing, for those who didn't know, the soup was made famous cause of a Seinfeld episode, and it became a very fashionable soup once in NYC!! USK did a great job with the soup, it was as close as I can remember when I last had it at Soup Nazi in NYC. I'm sooo excited!!
Oh... they also have a new combo deal about 1/2 price soup when purchase any sandwiches, and salads. THANKS USK!

Read about its review (don't remember either that's shanghai or enjoy classifieds), was pretty excited about about it cause I LOVE soup. Finally ordered from them yesterday - big thumbs up! Was exactly what I expected and definitely reminded me of soups back home.
I ordered a roasted pumpkin with chickpeas soup, and roasted chicken sandwich on ciabatta bread (rmb 40 combo). It was delicious, the consistency and texture of the soup was rich and hearty. Loved it. The roasted chicken breast was nice and tender, ciabatta bread was great. For this price, I really don't know where else can I find quality at this level in Shanghai. Highly recommended.

USK is my No. 1 delivery choice. It's run by a very nice guy who's put a lot of effort into making the service and food of high quality. I'm a vegetarian and USK has two great choices; the grilled vegetable and pan-fried tofu. My husband really likes the curry chicken sandwich. The soups are always very tasty and I do think USK is good value for money. They often include a 20% discount when you order so a meal for 2 can come to just RM70+ which is very decent. Highly recommended.

ordered delivery from urban soup kitchen today. surprisingly the food is great and for that price, even better. delivery is free since i'm within their free delivery zone. the food arrived nicely packaged. i ordered a 3 bean soup, minestrone, and a roasted chicken wrap. 3 bean soup is thick & hearty and flavorful, really yummy. minestrone is the one I think it's a bit plain, but given it's a pure vegetarian soup, not bad after I add some salt myself. the chicken wrap is great, with a touch of red wine onion, and some bell pepper chutney, yum... but it's too big for my appetite. overall a great experience. now i know where to go this winter!!

Great deal! Go with the set A (soup and salad for 40rmb) I had the pumpkin and chick pea soup with a chicken caesar. Very well priced. My friend got the wrap and said it was a bit bready, but I was more than satisfied with my order. Very close to a NY soup place.

Soup's On | New Eats
After reading assertions of “fresh ingredients” and “gourmet soups” on their website, we arrived at Urban Soup Kitchen with high hopes.
True to the layout of the New York delivery soup places the restaurant is based, this tiny nook’s only seating is four bar stools set along a high narrow bar. Since the skies were sunny, we figured what better place to have soup and sandwiches than al fresco? Moreover, we noticed with satisfaction that generous portions of soups started at (¥28) and combos (soup and salad or sandwich) were fairly reasonable at ¥40-60. Nice!
We ordered two combos and took our food to Fuxing Park. As we bit into the bread provided for the soup, our mouths were filled with a material that had the consistency of dry cotton. The seafood bisque, while a lovely warm vermillion color and laced with a healthy portion of shrimp, tasted of canned tomato paste and fish.
The rest of the meal was tasty. Our wild mushroom bacon soup was rich and creamy, the massive chicken breast wrap (¥35) was nicely flavored with grilled red onions and mustard and the smoked duck breast salad (¥38) finished with a lovely citrus twang. It was more akin to a nice lunch you could probably make yourself if you had an hour to spare. We’d still go back though, since let’s face it, who has that hour to spare?
