City Weekend says

This scrupulously clean hole-in-the-wall offers generous portions of home-style Cantonese food, so don't come here expecting dainty dim sum. Instead, try the rather hearty specialties, including a delicious rendition of fish flavor eggplant (made with real bites of salted fish), tempura fried frog and a rotating array of nourishing, slow-cooked soups.

Went to the 2nd branch of this restaurant on Fuxing Lu and Huaihai Lu. Small but buzzing with customers. The highlights are the really tender bbq pork, the fish, and the fried frog dish, and the yunnan melon. they also served a very nice mango pudding too, and we tried out the chestnut drink which was a first for me.

Escape into Pleasantville

This venue dishes up home-style Cantonese, and has qualities of the typical Chinese eatery–it's small and crowded. But push through the glass doors and you'll be greeted by waitresses who beam with genuine smiles like Chinese aunties, forgiving us for being unable to make up our minds. Our dishes were just as comforting. The enoki mushroom (RMB16) came in two bountiful stacks of mildly savory steamed mushrooms, which we enjoyed with a plate of char siu barbecue (RMB36), redolent in sweet pork juices. The standout dish however, is the humble fish-flavored eggplant (RMB18). Buduo's interpretation of this dish is the best we've ever had–the ceramic pot of creamy eggplant sat in a rich sauce with small morsels of salted fish. The generous serving of sauce-infused eggplant tasted terrific with rice. We ended our home-cooked meal with another quintessential Cantonese treat– a creamy, mango pudding (RMB6) topped with condensed milk. And then we got two more servings to go. Tabitha Alcott
