The second venture from the folks who brought you New York Style Pizza concentrates on bringing hefty burgers and real American-style steaks to the 'Hai. Their tasty steaks are quite affordable.

Eat Heavy! Because sometimes a carnal need arises in all of us (and although you probably look quite nice in a loin cloth with a knife clutched between your teeth; you can’t very well go crawling through the trees in Jing’An Park looking to capture prey. Even if you could –Pomeranian isn’t the most flavorful meat.) New York Style Steak & Burger is here to satisfy your primal needs! Serving imported Black Angus Beef, we cut all of our steaks to order and grind our burgers fresh every day. Come sink your teeth into a 20oz (570g) T-bone or a one-pound Ribeye (450g). We offer smaller cuts for the more delicate eaters. We also have a selection of non-beef main dishes for your less carnivorous dining companions. You’re hungry, you want meat, we want to feed you! And for a price that won’t break the bank.
And since you are a warrior hunter-gatherer type, you’ll love the challenge of finding us! We are located in the winding labyrinth of Tianzi Fang (Taikang Lu area). If you arrive from Taikang Lu enter on lane 274 follow the lane past Origin Restaurant and turn left at Q’s Coffee walk to the end of the lane, it’ll be on your left next to Bacaro Italian Restaurant. If you arrive from Jianguo Lu enter on lane 155 walk down and turn right at Q’s Coffee. And if you still can’t find us….well, we’ll come and get you! 5465-1676

After reading on City Weekend that NY Style Steak & Burger had won the Best Burger`s and quite rightly kicked Bubbas out of the comp into a losing second place (and rightly so) thought it would be time to check out the place again Its small and hard to find (insert joke here)let me tell you from the off-set but once you find it, trust me, your in for a good meal. All the starters were below Rmb60. My wife had the Butter and Garlic Escargot which made my artery's harden when i saw the plate loaded with butter making the escargot swim to safety. I had the Warm Steak & Blue Cheese Rocket Salad.(Rmb58) It came with 3 chunky slices of rare sirloin above a rocket and tomato salad with crumbled blue cheese. Big plate, very filling, very tasty. For main course she had the double lamb chop which comes with mashed potato and Chefs veg (Rmb145), I had the one pound NY Strip (Rmb260)with Jacket Potato and Bearnaise Sauce and Chefs Veg. The Steak was cooked "bloody as hell" the way i like it. The Lamb was 6 chops meat-wise although it only came out on two bones and was probably not far off a pound of meat too. I had the meat sweats and was glad i wore my baggy stretchy trousers. There are a lot of Steak Houses in town and you can go high end and pay Rmb700+ for a 10oz Filet etc, but what NY Style Steak does, is they cut out all the crap. Its a simple small restaurant, only a couple of servers, in the open kitchen just a couple of Chefs, the bar is the size of postage stamp and they put all their focus into giving you a good meal for a decent price. Tell me, Where else in Shanghai can you get a ONE POUND NY Strip for Rmb260 ?? The Drinks list was more than adequate, some nice wines for less than Rmb300. Long Beer list too with some hard to find beers. Had real Dr Peppers soft drink too. On the downside, the service was a bit lackluster, and a little hap-hazard and our drinks were forgotten twice. We arrived at 7.30pm and it was half full, It was full when we left at 8.45pm and it was all reservations (so that tells you something). Total Bill with drinks was Rmb600 Well worth a visit to feed your meat frenzy. A definite 8.5 out of 10

Great burgers ! And try the steak and blue salad, it is also great ! The only deception is the service : really bad and when you are more than 8, they charge you 10% more ... stupid.

I won't be able to review the actual food, but the service was pretty disappointing; called them twice to make and confirm a reservation, 2 days and 1 day before, and ended up being told they never heard of me. No apology or real investigation of what could have gone wrong; just a simple "we don't have a reservation and probably don't have room" and we were shown the door in less than 5 mn.
I will probably never show up there ever again; fail!

Have been a fan since they first opened. I love their big bleu burger and at RMB 55 it is a great deal. Always nice to go somewhere predictably good!

Easily one of the best steak and burger joints in town. It's a small restaurant hidden in an already maze-like Tianzifang, which only adds to the enjoyment. If I grab and Brooklyn BBQ burger and beer from New York Style, it's going to be a good day.
Finally found a place that do a decent Caesar Salad. Crispy croutons & generous amount of fresh bacon, not store bought bacon bits. Love the escargots. Burger was good, value for money. Cosy ambience and good service. Will definitely be back for dinner and steak.
.. Had a burger there the other day. , have to say , it was excellent !

Well...The Chef dude is a showman....he comes out hoisting the steaks and tells everyone he is the Master of Steaks and the US Gov't hired him to train people in steaks and cooks for NBA, Rolling Stones, etc when they come to China.....nice act but seriously, REALLY!
The streaks get burned in the fiery grill and loose the needed juice for tenderness and the black spots tastes acrid...My European gal friend could not eat it as it was unmanageable large and burned. They were out of like every side dish and the only really good thing was the Burger....pretty darn good.
For the prices, I cannot complain...whether it is US beef or not....fun place but eat the Burger...and their NY Style Pizza nearby IS the BEST in town!

best burgers around! especially for its price. the bleu cheese beef salad is amazing, the potato stacks are interesting in texture, and the burgers are top notch. never got around to trying their steak though...

a little piece of home!
I can rave on for days about this place! Great prices, unique location, great burgers & steaks!
I wish there is a location near my house! Honestly one of the better burgers I've had in Shanghai. The service is not 100% but not the worst as well. Burgers range from 55-65 rmb...... steaks are very very reasonable price as well.
Well recommended!

I had lunch here with a few of my friends last week. Meal was ok, but when the check came, I noticed an extra 3% Tianzifang Restoration Fee. Unsure what the fee was for I asked the waiting staff. Annoyed, she couldn’t tell me what the charge was for or how it would be used and directly got the chef/manager. When I asked him about the fee, he also jumped to the offensive. All I got from his angry rant was that they pay for “all of this”. Without me pressing the issue, he elected to remove the fee. He ended his rant by calling me a cheap person and an asshole and asked us to leave and never return.
I respect New York Style Steak and Burger’s efforts to help out the local community, but if you are going to tack on charges, no matter big or small, you need to train your staff, and yourself, how to explain these charges. And never call a paying customer an asshole…

finally you can find a good piece of steak at reasonable prices in shanghai!! the ribeye for 168rmb is a very reasonable price, as well as the striploin...had great experiences with both...the desserts are nothing to really write home about, just pretty standard fare
i think shanghai needs more of these joints so people don't feel the need to splurge on places like the Strip or Roosevelt which in my personal opinion is not much better, but costs me twice to 3 times as much...i've heard USDA meat will soon be readily available in the market, so lets hope more people try to do the quality of meats NY Steak has achieved at such prices!

Ate here yesterday, May 2. The reviews above are correct ... great steak, great price. All-in-all, a very great addition to our city Shanghai. To the owners: Please keep it up! Please maintain your greatness. We need you.

You're kidding me with the vegetarian option thing, right?
For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three.

This place needs a vegetarian option like those fake-meat Buddhist gaffs need a rib-eye steak on the menu.

Vegetarians going to steakhouses and giving them bad reviews...aya.

Nice atmosphere, good location, im sure the steak is good...but seriously needs a vegetarian option.

we drive to Shanghai for business meetings 3-4 times a month. Each time when we think of food that is reasonable and good, we end up in Taicang Lu at the New York Steak & Burger. Mostly very consistent in quality and their Ribeye is cooked almost perfect to our requirement everytime. Staffing is really lean and you must be patient when it is busy. Top choice for us when we visit. The Classic Reubens is a must if you missed it from back home.

When you get together with your friends I think its only natural to compare notes on who has the best what in town. This more often than not spirals into a competition of "best burger," "best pizza," etc. Not surprisingly this restaurant comes to mind in any burger competition.
I have to say I have scoured the city for the best burger and I have to say this venue takes the cake. The Manhattan Monster is piled high with fried onion strings, chili, cheese, and even a fried egg. Its so good I have not tried anything else!
So if you're looking for a good burger there's not a place in town that can top New York Burger & Steak.

What happened?! My wife and I recently returned from our two month break in the US and re-visited, what was once our favorite steakhouse in Shanghai, to come away severely disappointed! Our steaks were not nearly the quality they were when we left just before Xmas (and the many times before that). They even looked like they had freezer burned edges and you could tell they had been thawed and refrozen a few times. PLEASE tell me this was because of the remodeling or the long holiday or something....they use to be so good. We are going to try one more time and I hope they are in the pre-holiday condition so we can continue our steak and wine dinner nights! We are begging you!

the reviews from my friends in Shanghai was great and they have all decided that if they every need to have a great meal at a great price, they will pick this new Taikang Lu Steak House as their destination of choice.

Had a very pleasant Sunday night dinner at New York Style Steak and Burger yesterday.
I ordered a 12 oz. tenderloin, medium rare, and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked, with a nicely flavored crust on the outside but soft and juicy inside. Probably the best steak I have had so far in Shanghai at a pretty reasonable price!
Their appetizers and soups were great as well. The fried onion rings were addicting, and the mushroom bisque was VERY flavorful.
The weakest part of the dinner was the caesar salad, which was competent, but lacked a little kick in my opinion.
Service was great with very attentive waiters, who spoke good English and were helpful in suggesting things to order.
Overall, a great experience for me, and I'm definitely going back to try their burgers (which look really reasonably priced) next!

Great tasting steaks at reasonable prices...they are doing something right!

This restaurant has a sinister business plan: offer all steaks (which might be from the U.S., the chef adds) for under ¥298 and a tempting wine list of 15 bottles, each bottle at less than ¥350, to draw diners like bees to honey.
We were surprised when a deconstructed mushroom (¥30)–a deep bowl with a scoop of thyme scented minced mushroom–was brought to our table. Our waiter poured a flavorful mushroom consommé from a porcelain teapot, swirling the mixture to create an earthy soup with a rim of extra virgin olive oil. The seafood bisque (¥30), however, failed to impress. The dark orange soup had a texture like watery cream-of-wheat and the seafood flavor was further downplayed by lack of salt, although the chef promptly replaced it.
A spinach salad (¥35) with fresh, dark leaves, spiced baby walnuts, mild bleu cheese and an olive oil and balsamic dressing opened our appetites and went perfectly with our tart and fruity 2006 Nero d’Avola red (¥189). Then we lunged into meat mania, ordering the bleu cheese burger (¥55, 8 ounces of meat), a medium-rare grilled ribeye (¥198, 16 ounces) and a cajun-spiced pork tenderloin. All that protein came with roasted vegetables and a choice of creamy mashed potatoes or thick-cut fries. The pork was smoky with flavor and cooked without sacrificing the tender texture.
But it was a toddler-sized portion. The burger, so big we had to mash each bite into our mouths, had a subtle taste of stinky cheese infused into the meat and authentic buns. The best came last–a juicy, buttery steak of Flintstonian proportions with just the right amount of chargrill and pools of steak sauce. From the first bite, it was deliciously tender, with a subtle grilled taste and a fat to meat ratio befitting a juicy rib-eye. We'd go back just for that steak, especially when it's half the price of the only other "maybe American" steak place in town.
