100% agree about the decline in service. Ate there many times a week for the first two years in Shanghai, but the last year the staff has gotten rude and lazy, and the food is inconsistent at best.
Today I ordered a Cobb salad and they served me a ridiculously tiny amount of dressing. When I asked for some extra, they charged me 3 kuai. Is it really worth pissing off loyal customers just so you can nickel and dime them out of a few kuai?
A long time ago I read a bad review about munchies and the owner actually got on, apologized and offered the guy that complained a free burger. I was really impressed by his involvement and class. I'm not looking for a free meal, but I would like to hear the reaction from the owner to so many complaints... and what he plans to do about it! Until then, I'll definitely not be going there as much!

ooop's sorry it mean's you enjoyed the food...

I live in the block behind Munchies and the bad reviews where justified, I stopped in on several times and loved them, but over the last 6 month's the service crashed and the msg increased...
It could be a taste issue however if the guy's from CW thought it was rigged then pull them and explain, to pull the reviews and not say anything look's ike the owner has some pull and sorry 5 starring them based on what you posted mean's what?

Last time there were a number of bad reviews about Munchies was when Caliburger opened just a block away. This time they came in the closing days of the Readers' Choice awards. Strange that... Just back from lunch there. Place packed, food just good as it ever was.

Just had lunch at Munchies... my first time to the place. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon. First, I was sat to a dirty table. The service was pretty bad and slow. And the food itself was pretty blah. I think there are plenty of better food options in the area. But maybe the place is much better after a 420 experience.

I'm a new arrival to Shanghai, so I don't know how this place used to be, but I totally agree with the recent reviews -- bad food, worse service!

click37 you are right, the quality of the food and service has gone downhill over the past year or so. I did enjoy this place as it was good value for money but really the service here is now more a Chinese standard. Which means there is none, things just take too long and how hard is it to bring the orders to the table at the same time? Last time I went one milk shake arrived before our food and another after. So if you enjoy Chinese service then this is the place for you.

Earthmom, you were reading the "great" reviews because someone deleted all the recent post's that were slamming Munchies for bad food and crap service recently, why they were removed I have no idea but the whole point of the reviews is to tell people about great places and to warn them when a place like munchies goe's to bad.... which it has.
So yep what you found was exactly on par with what was posted and deleted, maybe City weekend will refund you, maybe not...

I am re-reading all the great reviews above but still feel a need to share the very poor dining experience I had this afternoon at Munchies. I visited with my two sons, ordered their customary burgers, fries and shakes and waited. Waited and waited. My juice came after twenty minutes and the burgers arrived after 30. The french fries were cold and undercooked-I have never seen fries served white-they had obviously been pulled out the fryer way too early and then left to get cold. They were good for the garbage bin and nothing else. I cannot believe a waiter would even walk fries that looked like that. My wrap came after the boys had nearly finished their burgers. The chicken inside was dry and chewy and so salty I eventually picked it all out so I could eat the rest, which consisted of some lettuce, a few small chunks of mango and some runny sauce. The fruit served with it was cut yesterday or the day before and looked brown, old and unappetizing. We finally asked the waiter for the shakes after 45 minutes and were told there was a new staff so could we please wait five more minutes. The waiter then asked me to pay for our meal even though the shakes had not arrived. I refused, thinking once we paid we might never see the shakes. They eventually arrived, but the chocolate shake my youngest son ordered was instead a chocolate and peanut butter shake. He didn't like the taste and didn't drink it, but I am grateful at least that he does not have a peanut allergy. They then brought me a second juice, obviously not even remembering they had already made me one. This was our first time at Munchies and definitely our last. Crappy food, crappy service, overpriced like every other restaurant in Shanghai that caters to western tastes (or lack thereof) At least Johnny Moo's gets the food to the table in good time, gets the orders right and makes sure it is hot.
Breakfast: The Morning Dew is easily the best breakfast deal in Shanghai. Great sausages, bacon, two eggs AND pancakes, AND coffee or tea (again, the coffee is very good for a non-cafe). I can't remember exactly what it costs, but I think it's rmb38. Compare that to the really average fare they're serving down the street at Mr. Pancake House (which has terrible coffee).
On two or three occasions out of the hundreds of times I've ordered delivery, there have been minor mistakes in the order. That doesn't seem unusual to me at all. Regardless, the first time the delivery guy came back with the drinks they forgot (poor guy, I'm on the 6th floor with no elevator. I always tip though.). The second time was pretty funny because they really mixed up the order. Must have entered the wrong dishes in the computer. No problem though because everything is good anyway so I just took it. The restaurant called later to apologize and offered to fix the order. Mistakes will be made, but I was impressed that they actually followed up on it.
I live just around the corner from Munchies and I could probably take the crown for most munchies eaten in Shanghai in 2011. That's saying a lot, because I know some major Munchies eaters. I get delivery at least 3 or 4 times per week and eat in house at least once. With an honest review it's important to keep in mind the price relative to what you're reviewing. Munchies is pretty much Shanghai's most affordable Western fast-food. The quality of what they serve is out of proportion to how cheap it is. I can't figure out how they do it. They're far cheaper and far better than any other fast-food, or even medium fast place I've been to anywhere. Amazing. 1.The Food: I've tried everything on the menu at least twice, and for many items maybe 50 times. In terms of consistency, Munchies is almost on par with the big boys (McDonalds, KFC, etc.). That's very unusual for a small outfit like Munchies. I've heard occasional complaints about their consistency, I can't understand where that comes from. They're always spot-on. Soggy fries one time out of fifty? Perhaps, but that's sensational compared to any other place. The burgers and hot dogs are fantastic: fresh, consistent, unpretentious and delicious. This is the basic fare and they nail it every time. You can only get so creative with a hot dog, and Munchies dogs are the best in Shangers. The Reuben is the tastiest I've ever had. Could be a bit meatier but I'm not complaining. Where else can you get a Poboy in Shanghai? Even if Munchies' Po is only decent. It's still cheap and tasty. The BLT is okay, the Jerk is jerky and the Philly is cheesy. The soft taco is a legend. See other reviews below to confirm this. The Quesadilla is average, but this ain't Mexico so you won't be disappointed. The Cobb salad is hands down the best deal on a meal salad in Shanghai. Healthy, filling and fresh as I've ever seen. The milkshakes are the best I've had anywhere. Hands down. Again, super cheap. The coffee is pretty decent, pretty average but Munchies is the only place in town where you get a decent coffee for less than rmb10. To me, this is a major victory for Munchies. So many places in Shanghai serve poisonous swill for at least rmb25. Munchies proves the idiocy of this trend and for that I love her. The desserts? Holy shit! Try the brownie, you'll die. Only complaints on the food is my mom makes better coleslaw and the potato salad sucks big time. Otherwise Munchies is the king of Shanghai. You pay twice as much for food that's half as good at any other place in Shanghai. How does Munchies do it? The SERVICE: Okay, Munchies is a small place, kind of a mom and pop thing so don't expect manic American style server bees waiting for your every bullying command. It's advisable to grab a menu from the register and order straight there before you sit down if you want to get fast service. That's not a big deal for me considering the price. For delivery, they're extremely fast and usually accurate.

Maximus, you'll be pleased to hear that they've just introduced a breakfast menu, at the Wuding Lu branch anyway. I think it's available from 8 or 8.30am.

The food is good, and the value is great. Agree with another reviewer that some breakfast food on the menu would be a nice addition.

I was quite disappointed when i visit Munchies for the 1st time a week ago. The place was really small and empty, when we walked in, the staffs were having lunch, as soon as they see us, they ran away into the kitchen and left us standing in the middle of the place with nobody. When I asked if they were opened, a waitress came out and stood there staring at us!? Weird service!
The food is just okay, not as great as described here. At least the french fries were crispy =)

I used to be a regular there, but they let me down a couple of times lately! we had 1 beef quesadilla & 1 soft taco delivered tonight: the beef in the soft taco was really off! :( last time the fruit salad did not exactly look fresh too.
i guess i'll just for the regular beef patty next time

It's difficult to fault munchies, its a Shanghai stalwart and I'm a serial customer what with the reasonable prices and free delivery. But I do feel they could've added more to the menu in the recent revamp. It was always frustrating not to have a salad option; this was an all-too-obvious addition. Otherwise, what about new sandwiches? And a breakfast/brunch menu? That'd surely be a money spinner given the lack of convenient brunch spots north of jing'an temple - Mr pancake house down the road is always packed to the brim... Otherwise, the occasional bone and gristle in the burger patties is my only complaint.

I had lunch there last week. I found the place to have good simple food done right at a really great price. Since I live in Jing an area I will be going back there regularly.

Have only been here a handful of times and always seem to order the same things: burger, fries and milkshake. My friends like the Cincinnati Chili and tacos. Always hits the spot, and the reasonable prices makes this place a keeper!

Munchies is great. I've had their quesadilla, jamaican jerk chicken sandwich, and cuban sandwich. I've so often been disappointed by sandwiches in shanghai but this was a nice surprise. the baguette-style bread they use is fresh and crusty and the quesadilla beats cantina agave's floppy, poor excuse for the dish. like other reviewers have said, the milkshakes are great too. the cozy ambience and down-to-earth prices make this an easy go-to spot when im craving solid american food.

Let's be honest: the peanutbutter and chocolate shake is also sumptalicious. So you were still right.
Spread the Munchies love, people.

Opps, I meant to say the chocolate/banana shake...

I've only ordered it for delivery, so can't speak about service, or ambiance at the actual restaurant but I just have to say I LOVE the peanut/chocolate shake. So tasty!

Is it a sign that you order Munchies too much when ALL of the rota of delivery men know your name?

yummy burgers! i ate the munchies' burger with a side dish cole slaw. reasonable spread of patty, tomatoes, lettuce and onions. perhaps i was hungry but i wolfed it down in a couple of minutes. i think the price is rather reasonable. good food with food price for American food. it's all worthwhile! good place to bring your friends over. will be back for other burgers :)

Hmmm...been to Munchies about 50 times now. Really hit and miss with the food, and it's not the consistancy thats the problem, but the insipid recipies that they use for some of the items, like the sloppy quesedillas and and run of the mill fries. The burgers are good enough for the price, but won't blow you away, and the dogs are really well dressed, but at the end of the day they're just "good...for China". So - why the hell have I been there 50 times? Softshell beef tacos. This dish is a gem. Everything is prepared fresh: lettuce is fresh, tomato salsa fresh, ground beef hot and juicy, and they dont chintz out on the cheese either. Very nice surprise. The cuban sandwich is pretty good too, and the chicken ceasar was decent, but its all about the tacos, chico.

I like Munchies! Try the chicken wrap. They are very generous in serving the chicken. Plus, they deliver for free if you live somewhere around Xikang Lu, Wuding Lu or Jiaozhoulu. Never eat in at the resto though. I always order from home or take out. But, I would definitely recommend this place to my friends.

Whatever you do, do not order the Chili Cheese Fries from Munchies. The "Chili" is basically 1/3 ground beef with 2/3 oil. Disgusting.

I used to work in the area and ate here once a week on Monday nights as my "me" time: just myself, a good book, and American food. Had dinner there for the first time in a few months and it was PACKED. On a Wednesday night!!! Ended up sharing a table with another pair or ABC's, but food was still great. It's good to see that they are so popular and have rounded up a huge following after 2 years but still maintain their quality. I will agree with Beverly though, they give priority to their delivery orders so you end up waiting about twice as long for your food than it should really take...
I've ordered through their menu and the Jamaican Jerk Chicken sandwich is my favorite, although the caesar chicken wrap is quite good if you want something guilt free, their quesadilla's are stuffed with meat and their hot dogs are a great deal (26-30 rmb for a hot dog and a side, get the Chicago style with crinkle cut fries and i'm practically home). Their smoothies and juices are pretty good and milkshakes are what keep me coming back. They should consider opening a third location that delivers out to Xujiahui / Shanghai Stadium area...

Munchies was much, much smaller than I'd anticipated. A very little space with perhaps 6-8 small tables. It's a little dark and very slightly dingy - considering it was bright daylight outside, I was expecting a well-lit, airy, spankin' clean American diner. I actually wasn't sure if we were at the right place, if I hadn't seen the massive sign or the foreigners inside. The staff wear strange tie-dye shirts and are significantly understaffed. We waited AGES for our food and drinks, until I lost it and started griping at them. It was pretty clear there was one (struggling) chef in the kitchen, and they gave importance to delivery orders to their dine-in customers. One tip for Munchies - if you're going to make your customers wait 45 minutes for their food (!!!!!), give them complimentary fries to snack on whilst they wait.
Well, at least the food was freakin' brilliant. I zeroed in on the Chilli Cheese Dog and french fries. There's no way I would resist a hot dog smothered in cheese... mmmm... Munchies really lived up to it - the hot dog bun was soft and not soggy (it was the ones you buy in a bag at the supermarket, not a fresh roll, but I like it that way!), and the sausage was very tasty (it wasn't a gourmet-style German sausage or anything, but it was nice and fat and juicy). I loved the generous helping of cheese on top, and best of all, the scoop of chilli meat sauce that was encased in the bun. Ahhhhhh it was luscious! It made the whole hot dog really moist and juicy, and so tasty. It was an average size, and didn't fill me, but at least it came with crinkle cut fries (my favourite kind) that I adored. Plus, they gave a pot of tomato sauce with my meal, without me even having to ask.
My drink of choice was the Chocolate banana smoothie. I didn't expect much since the place looked so small and pokey, but was so impressed with it. Served in a decent-sized glass (can't stand it when restaurants serve milkshakes in small little glasses), the chocolate and banana mix was creamy and luscious. Best of all, I tasted lots of vanilla ice cream whipped in, and it wasn't icy at all. So so so creamy and satisfying!
Overall, apart from the ridiculous wait, the food at Munchies really hit the spot. Their menu is downright unhealthy, but it's an awesome place for non-dieting foodies to pig out and chow down on American diner-style food. Will definitely be back!

Get your Munchies all holiday long. Munchies is open and will be open throughout this May Festival. Delivery to your door. www.munchies.cn

not to big on eating in the restaurant, but love the burgers, potato salad and shakes. You know a place is good when the manager of I Love Shanghai has a stack of Munchies menus on the bar and calls in the order for you to your bar stool. Awesome!

This happens to be my sons fav restaurant in SH. It is a part of his reward chart that if he gets enough stickers for doing his chores and good things, his reward is going to munchies. So far everything I have had there is delish...Love the Cuban sandwich and the georgia peach smoothie!

Exactly! Cheese is a vegetable, right?

Hey goat, the sauerkraut on the hot dogs is salad enough for me!
had a chance to finally try. stuff is decent, is well priced, and is delivered for free if you happen to live nearby.
all in all, good stuff!
would be great if they added some salads and some healthy stuff. i know it's munchies, but even when i'm under the influence, i like to delude myself that my meal has some semblance of nutritional value.
narsf, lol @ the typos. hope you don't bring that sense of humor with you too the classroom!
well if half the reviews here are half true, we're a quarter way to a decent restaurant. and with those prices, i'm sure i'll check it out at some point anyway.

Goat, you and I could spend all day sniffing out the shenanigan-ners on City Weekend. But frankly, we have better things to...
... well, actually right now I'm at a loose end, so I don't have much else to do and I guess I could but, y'know...
Anyway, Munchies is genuionely good. I have definitaely been too Muchies Cafe on Wuding Lu and taste the good flavour and friendly staffs! Give it a great four starts!
hmmm where are the shenanigans police? clicking on a couple of the reviewers here, I'm finding a lot of people with 1 or 2 sole reviews.
case in point, jakehurley has 2 reviews, and misspells "to" as "too", just like the contributor does up top.
but with all the good reviews and the cheap prices, who cares right?
wow great reviews, i am going there TONIGHT!
would it be dangerous to the structural integrity of my abdominal walls if I went on a "substance-induced urge" though?

I come back time and again. The only quibble, if it is a quibble, there's not enough steak in the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. But as far as value for money is a question, it's better than Element Fresh and the pretentious tw*t-to-table ratio is lower too.

The Cincinnati chili was spicy and more-ish, though we thought it odd that by default it only includes minced beef--no kidney beans unless you order it "five ways". The chili fries were absolutely fantastic--thick, wet and irresistable--though the chili covering them wasn't nearly as tasty as the Cincinatti chili, more like plain ground beef. Best chocolate milkshake we've had (so far) in Shanghai, reasonably thick and creamy though still not quite as strong a taste of chocolate as I would like. And the hot dog with sauerkraut, ketchup and mustard was a good match for a real New York dog. The chicken tacos were fine but paled in comparison to the rest. Thanks Munchies!

One of the best value for money, comfort food places in the city. Firm favourites for me are the BBQ burger and the Chicken Quesadilla. A couple of inconsistencies with the delivery service stop this being a 5*

Best bang for your buck I've ever seen in China for classic American food/ tex mex / hot dogs / chilli.
Owner is from Detroit and knows the real deal.

love their double cheeseburger so so so so much! and the chili fries are the best in town for sure! such value for money. why eat mcD's when u can order munchies too?

Nice, but staff seemed too busy preparing takeaway orders to attend to the sit-in customers. Dirty plates left on our table right through dessert and second drinks.

Best value in town for the burgers. I love the tex mex, especially the amount of cheese given on the enchiladas and tacos. Delivery service is always fast and fresh.

food tastes good, nice English speaking staff, prices are reasonable.
BUT:
I also suffered a bad case of gastrointestinal issues afterwards. Similar to the poster above: severe stomach cramps and diarrhea / stomach pains for 1 week after having a cheeseburger and fries. thanks!

munchies now has a new location? 563 Shunchang Lu. yesterday i recieved a menu delivered to my door, by the way. Great Design! and after reading some reviews here, i tried their double cheese burger with fries, and a strawberry banana milkshake. Delivered in around 30 minutes, let me say, just a good burger. tasty meat, fresh veggies. the french fries are addictive. so crisp and hot. and a milkshake, and a good one for only 18 rmb. good munchies. cheap prices.

While the food is not extraordinary Munchies can't be beat when it comes to western food at a low price. Always a good option when I want quick cheap delivery.

good fun. good music. good food. before going out bar and club hopping last night. our party of 8 headed over to munchies to fill up our empty stomachs. tasty burgers, tacos, enchiladas, my favorite chicken caesar wrap and cheap beer 8rmb qing dao makes this a perfect and cheap start to any saturday night out on the town. GREAT VALUE.

good food, good service, no hassle. try the carolina hotdog with hot fries. smoothies are all fruit and well done. their prices that cannot be beat.
A hidden gem along Jiao zhou and Wuding Lu. The Carolina Dog with the meat paste, coleslaw and shredded onions was interesting. The best thing was the free side that they offer! I opted for fruit salad and was pleased with the apples, pear and fresh orange.
Had wanted to give their soy chocolate and banana milk a try too, but was told that it was not thick and frothy, so I had to end up gulping water. :(

I love their tacos! Fast service to my work and home!

American-style Diners in Shanghai are simply terrible, this one is decent rather than amazing but manages to be the best of a sorry bunch. Never had Cincinnati Chili before and although I have no idea if it was authentic I thought it was interesting. All the food (except the odd Cal-Mex food) manages to be pretty good and authentic and the price is just a little bit more than going to Burger King.
On the downside, I've had to wait forever to get my food. Also, considering the portions are somewhat small, a better selection of desserts would be appreciated - basically it's just cake & ice cream, pie is conspicuously missing.

enjoying a french toast plate this morning. fresh cup of orange juice, all for under 50 rmb. free wireless and good music to start the day. very nice:)

I went there for lunch today. Ordered chicken guesadilla. It was very nice with crispy wrap and loads of tasty pulled chicken meat stuffed inside. They fell short of cheese but I'm not a big fan of chesse so it's okay for me. The portion is big consider they aren't frugal on meat.

Hot Dogs, Fried hot dogs but no Corn Dog? What gives, give the people what they want.
Food is OK but Good for the price.

Welcome me back to shanghai. No longer in Jing an but glad to see Munchies is still there. Food is still very good, service and style is relaxed. I had the cheeseburger and fries. Yummy. Chocolate, peanut butter milkshake, just too good. To bad i am too far away now for delivery. Be back soon.
Great value and good food.
Dogs, burgers and tacos are right.
Delivery can get a bit helter skelter but aside from that no complaints.
Back to Munchies again this weekend for lunch with some friends. Again, the food, service, and price were great! When we arrived we were the only ones there. By the time we left there were people waiting for a table. That is always a good sign. Isis and her staff do a great job of making you feel welcome. It is a regular stop for us.

It's G.R.E.A.T
The food is really good and for the first time you can enjoy Western food with chinese prices.
I'll be back Munchies
This place was great! Great lcoation, great prices, great service.
I had two 5 ways in a single sitting and like 4 beers. My personal hangover remedy. Try is sometime.
It's on the north side of wuding, just east of jiaozhou, across the street from the Nokia, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson service centers.

Munchies. there are some restaurants my family likes to go too. some we just try from time to time. but then there is Munchies that seems to be everything just simple and right about western food in shanghai. when we can go inside and enjoy a good snack, meal together, as our family is 5. and finish satisfied not only with the food, service but especially the honesty. value. its great. trying everything and so far so good.

The food was just okay, but the Chicago-style hot dog and the Three Way Special were totally not worth it considering how sick they made me. I ate at Munchies on a Tuesday night around 20:00 and about eight hours later, woke up at 4:00 with severe stomach cramps. What ensued for the next ten days (yeah, ten days) was the worst case of diarrhea I've ever experienced. After a doctor's visit and a three day course of meds I was nearly back to normal. Thanks Munchies.

I stumbled into this place two weeks ago and returned three times since. I don't understand why it's not packed, as it's really some of the best and most affordable food in Shanghai. Milkshakes live up to the hype, especially the peanut butter chocolate. Perhaps the owner was a kitchen-roadie for some jam band before coming to Shanghai.

I've only been in Shanghai a few months now, but one of the first things i noticed was the lack of good western restaurants here. Especially American food. Munchies is the exception. Had the Carolina hot dog as was recommended to me by their waitress. It was served with some good hot, crispy fries, only (30rmb) and a strawberry milkshake for only (18rmb). It was perfect and i will be back
We had lunch there this week and thought it was great. Very small, but quaint. The food was good, as was the service, as was the price. Very reasonable I had the 4 way chili dish and being from Cincinnati I know what it is supposed to taste like...close enough for me especially being 7500 miles from the real thing. My wife had the hot dog which was grilled just right. We will definetely go back

What a lucky find near my house. Thanks for the review and listing here. I was searching for somewhere new near my place in Jing An. I did not know there was this tasty little diner so close by. Wuding Lu and Jiao Zhou Lu. So i ended up finding it last night. The food was terrific. Absolutely. True american food done right, and I have to tell you, i've missed it. The milkshakes were great as well. But the best thing about Munchies is their prices. As a couple, we paid right around 100rmb. Which I did not think that was possible here in Shanghai. Great western food for a fair price. Thanks again and I recommend this place to all looking for good business.

High Praise
When you name a restaurant after the substance-induced urge to eat everything that isn't nailed down, you set the bar pretty high. As is customary before entering any Western-style restaurant in Shanghai, we said a prayer and braced for disappointment. Shuffling past the tie-dyed wait staff and doing our best to tune out the jam band music, our eyes were immediately drawn to the menu's Cincinnati-style chili. A rare site in America, downright odd in China, the cocoa chili served was surprisingly authentic and packed a nice kick. We went for the five-way special (YY32) with cheese, beans and onions. Eat it with mustard (trust us). The chicken soft tacos (YY34) were another winner. Nothing fancy: a little seasoned meat, some salsa, sour cream, shredded lettuce and grated cheese. Just simple well-made tacos, much appreciated and something of a rarity in the local culinary world. For the hell of it, we ordered a side of potato salad (YY12), which though good, was still potato salad. Add a Cosmic Charlie fruit smoothie (YY18) and you've got a delicious meal for about YY50 per person. We can't wait to come back to try the hot dogs (YY26-30) and the Cajun Po'boy (YY42). Munchies has taken the bar and raised it "higher." --Derek Sandhaus
