City Weekend says

Shanghai's first Canadian eatery serves up hefty portions of classic Western and French-Canadian fare, using fresh ingredients and imported specialties like Atlantic salmon. For breakfast, enjoy a large crepe piled high with fresh fruit. Pour a fair amount of maple syrup on top (of everything) for good measure.

Cooking with Canucks

With every weekend comes the usual question of where to go to enjoy a tasty brunch on a Sunday morning. Finding ourselves stuck visiting the same regular spots again and again, the arrival of a new (and probably the only) Canadian restaurant specializing in brunch came as welcome news. From savory and sweet crepes, French toast, thick pancakes, and waffles to eggs, omelets, fresh fruit and yogurt, the menu features French-Canadian fare made with fresh, low-fat, healthy ingredients. All the dishes have a story behind them and are named after the owner's relatives, and there's even a children's menu for the kids to peruse. As far as we can tell, Canadian food is relatively indistinguishable from common Western fare apart from the use of a few homegrown ingredients, most notoriously real maple syrup which is happily present here and which we eagerly poured onto our chosen dishes. Don't expect creative plating and haute cuisine; do expect mounds of fruit heaped atop your plate in gargantuan rather than bite size portions. Our perfectly poached Eggs Benedict with asparagus and Swiss cheese (RMB76) was covered with a creamy, hollandaise sauce that nicely balanced the flavors of the dish. The Emperor's Breakfast (RMB68) was generously portioned and came with helpings of fruit, bacon, sausage, eggs and hash browns deliciously grilled with onions and basil. The portions are so large you won't have room for much else, though we were tempted to order everything we saw the server carry past us to other tables. Service was friendly and attentive--the staff even asked use if we'd prefer our bacon regular or well-done--and the Canadian chef even took the time to come out of the kitchen to chat with the customers. Although we strongly recommend spending a leisurely morning at Julie's, the restaurant also serves lunch and dinner which we're certainly looking forward to giving a try. --Kim-Tien Huynh

not impressed by this place. waitress was extremely rude. first rushed us twice to order, then tooke the menu and started walking away after we ordered the sandwiches, didn't bother to take drink orders. never even came close to see if we needed anything. guys in the kitchen came out and walked around, even served food, so we could see his stained uniform. food is less than decent so not sure why it deserved the good ratings. wouldn't recommend it.

The Hongmei Lu location is very pleasant. I was there for a lunch set burger. Fresh ingredients and great taste. Would definitely go back to try brunch.

Dear themessiah

We have a great breakfast/brunch, the best Canadian Breakfast in town, as well as dinner… we also provide party catering platters and our famous homemade pies and cakes, our Carrot Cake is a must, made fresh daily on site. HO! By the way you don’t have to spent 60rmb on cab fare, just take subway line 2 to Science & Technology Museum, exit #6 and we are just a few minute away walking. See our location on our website www.juliesfood.com.

From the picture it looks pretty classy. Do you only sell foods or do you have a little deli corner as well? After a review from Swiss Cook i'm tentative to spend 60 rmb on taxi rides there and back...maybe when I drop by the City Shop next time.

I would like to take a moment to say what a fabulous experience I recently had at this restaurant. I went with a very large group of people for a birthday party and they placed us upstairs in a more intimate setting for the evening. They provided free chocolate crepes for my young daughter upon arrival - and I thought this was a terrific and generous gesture. She was the only child present and obviously being parents themselves - they were very accommodating with her. I had to leave the party early but I heard NOTHING but praise about the food at this restaurant. The owners organised a set menu for the party and apparently the food flowed liberally all night and according to my well travelled and particular friends, it was superb. I wish your restaurant the very best of luck!

I should have know. The first time I heard about this place was in a newsblast by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The Headchef is a chef from Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Pictures on the Menu are obviously Photo shopped. Anyway, we went to give it a try this morning since we both craved a good Canadian Breakfast . We where greeted by the owner who took our order for coffee and then disappeared behind the bar to continue reading his book. The coffee that arrived was lukewarm and had a stale taste. After waiting a bit over 20 minutes in a empty restaurant for two plates of egg they finally arrived. The scrambled eggs on where a fried egg chopped up into small pieces served with home made hashbrowns and burned onion pieces. The fruit on the plate was hard and flavorless. The small glass of Orange Juice from the Tetra pack was 20CNY which did not help to make it taste any better. But what really made me laugh was the fact that they would photo shop Blueberry bushels and other fruit items on their Menu but yet managed to keep the split sauce on their Main course Pictures. Andy Denys in Canada does a better job than Julies Food Experience when it comes to Breakfast. And certainly cheaper.

The grand opening over the weekend at the Hongmei Lu walking street was great! Marcel and the team cooked up a great BBQ and 15 Kwai Tiger draft.

I liked the plush seating arrangements and the open, on display kitchen upstairs.

We went back the next day to enjoy the Emperor's Breakfast. As Kim-Tien promised, we got our Canadian Maple Syrup.

It was also fun to see a few of the guys that helped out at Hello Allo Canada! Remember, the key word is "Chef"
