This new American diner is in the same location as old Moon River Diner. Try the all-day breakfast items (homemade waffles, bacon, and eggs) or other comfort foods like meatloaf with mushroom gravy, macaroni and cheese, or apple pie and then work it off to jukebox tunes.

Hot food, cheap, lots of it... can't say fairer than that, right?
We had this battered steak thing, can't remember the name of it, but it comes with smashed spuds and seasonal vegetables, 'twas about 70RMB, just a steal.
Big let-down in the apple pie though: just a mushy horrible mess inside. One star off for that for sure. But the rest was faultless.

Best breakfast Ive had in Shanghai, impressive!

This is a great place to take the family for breakfast or dinner. The service is great, the staff are friendly, the food is good quality and tastes good.

This place has certainly improved in the "Getting Things To The Table Hot" stakes.
Bacon cheeseburger is simply one of the finest burgers in Shanghai - and it's enormous too!

great breakfasts for the price, friendly chinese and Filipino staff, hot coffee that isn't chinese watered down, nice outside eating area, just great! i recommend the omelets, well done!
I worship this restaurant. It brings a natural balance to the restaurants of Hong Mei Lou. It's authentic American Diner food! What's there not to love!? It's less than Big Bamboo or Blue Frog, but more than Johnny Moo's. The food here is so great, not only their Burgers, but also their All-Day-Breakfasts and amazing Blue-Plate-Specials. Nothing beat's their Country Fried Steak or their Meatloaf or the Steak and Eggs for breakfast.
Normally, I have different purposes for different restaurants. Big Bamboo is pre-clubbing food and beer, Papa's Bierstube is next-day-after-clubbing hangover cure. But for Faith's Diner, I'm making an exception, this is a multi-purpose restaurant, and it's amazing.

After much prodding I managed to get Mrs Narsf to try this place, and while we're glad we did, there's still a lot to sort out. Though there's no denying it was a great breakfast.
The positives: The servings were extremely generous, with the waffle taking up the whole plate and the steak taking up half of the dish. The steak was done well, and the waffle a little eggy but on the whole pretty tasty. The apple pie too was generous and had a great crust.
The negatives: The ownership by the couple next door at Bastiaan has certainly influenced things here. Service is kind of slow, but very polite. The food arrives warm, sometimes cold which is a massive turn off. Also, while the set meals offer good value, the lack of drinks with them really bump up the bill. Enough food to satisfy two people will set you back about 100RMB, but two juices will easily add 50 - 60RMB to that.
There's nothing particularly wrong with the food, there's nothing wrong with the service. The place, like next door, could do with some work.

Much to our surprise, we found that diner is located in the same space as the now-defunct Moon River Diner. Upon entering we were greeted with familiar strains of juke box music, a black and white tiled floor and décor reminiscent of a good old American diner, circa 1950's. The menu / place mat slipped in front of us noted an all day breakfast with tantalizing items like homemade waffles, bacon and eggs (YY45) and a bottomless cup of coffee for only YY20 in addition to the expected diner food like burgers and fries. However, nothing looks better on a damp winter Shanghai night than a slice of comforting meatloaf, so we chose meatloaf with mushroom gravy (YY60). The cream of broccoli soup looked appetizing but was cold and upon first tasting. It was necessary to beef up the bland taste with salt and pepper which greatly improved it. The serving was enormous, the succulent mushroom gravy was piping hot. Sadly the side of mashed potatoes was cold and the meatloaf a bit on the mushy side, though the accompanying mélange of vegetables were ample, fresh and tastily sautéed. Macaroni and cheese (YY60) was an improvement with a creamy cheddar and Parmesan sauce and a crunchy bread topping. The redeeming factor of this value packed meal would have been a slice of home-baked apple pie (YY25). Unfortunately, our friendly, aiming-to-please waitress said they were out of all the pies.Though somewhat disappointed, there is still potential here if the inherited recipes of old are followed and the kitchen has some quality control. A return visit is warranted if only for that elusive piece of apple pie. Peggy Rosen
