The brainchild of a New Jersey-bred ABC who's out to fix Shanghai's bagel deficit, this Jing'an spot deserves hearty praise. Their bagels - including cinnamon raisin, sesame and everything - are delicious and cream cheese (bacon-flavored!) as well as lox and capers means this dough is worth getting up for. Dine-in ends at 7:30pm, but you can order to go until 8:30pm.

Horrible bagels. Yes, I am a Jew from Jersey, but I feel like even without my expert knowledge, I would be turned off by the tough, dense texture of these puppies. I realize this place probably does mostly delivery business, but the 15 minute time lag between when I got my bagel and when my friend got his sandwich was pretty lame, especially since the place was pretty empty. You know a bagel takes one minute to cut open and toast- why not wait until the sandwich is done before making the bagel? Anyway, my friend ordered an eggplant parm, and the bread was nice and toasty, the eggplant was hot from the stove, but the marinara sauce was ice cold-- like they poured it on directly from the fridge. Yuck. The waitstaff was nice about heating up some sauce for him, though. One final word about pricing: so a bagel with cream cheese and a side of lox costs 36rmb but the lox bagel sandwich costs 60? I would love to hear how a piece of onion, a piece of tomato, and a sprinkling of capers is worth that extra 24rmb.

Visited again and had to write a review :) Great service (the waitresses, and who I assume to be the manager) are all very welcoming and warm, always giving me a smile. The breakfast bagels are awesome, and I had another sesame one with cream cheese again too. I read some of the reviews below...seriously, if these nice people cursed at your wife, it was her fault. I can't imagine any of them being anything less than super pleasant and polite.

the service is great! depending on the time of the day, it can take a bit longer, but the food is always good and the service is far more friendly than most places. if some lady got told to F OFF, she probably had it coming to her.

Not the perfect bagel, but I'm not a stickler for getting things perfect. Satisfies my bagel craving, although I'm no bagel connoisseur. Had the sesame bagel with cream cheese - simple fare, but it's delicious. Chewy, fresh bread and a big ol' generous serving of creamy goodness.
Oups I didn't realise there was passionate debate about this place. This is near my work area and I went for a take away for lunch today and went a few time in the past with my friends. Let's say it from the beginning I never eaten Bagels before so I can't compare with what it would be like but I think it is good and generous for the filling as well, the owner is always very nice and up for a conversation and it feels comfortable and relax to sit there for coffee and food. It is a big expensive (like so many expat place in Shanghai) that is the less of my review.

Howdy folks!
Been following your little debate, and felt it was becoming rather unfair towards the staff of Egghead. I cannot vouch for the bagels as I am not that familiar with what a “real/proper/true/original-tasting bagel” should be like. And in my opinion the prices have much to be desired for. But I visited the place a few times now and the service was always ok – not exceeding, not bad, but ok. I would also have to disagree with the statement that the customer is always right, especially in Shanghai where you see so many people expecting to be treated like royalty, it was to be expected that sooner or later someone would lose it. Ok, harsh words were not necessary, but sh…happens, maybe we should all just move on?

Well, I never write reviews on Cityweekend, but I totally agreed that the service at Egghead bagel sucks. Besides its so slow (just like everybody's been saying), I somehow feel like the owner treated us with less respect just because we look Asian. Also agree that the price is such a rip off for such a mediocre breakfast menu. I guess they are still doing OK as there not that many places serving bagels (yet) around the area.

Haters have to stop hating on Egghead, as a person who wakes up with strange girls in his bed and baijou hangover on a consistent basis I can say these guys hook a lao wei up. I love the egghead breakfast, for something like 45 RMB I get coffee and a bagel and omelette's. I set my alarm for 9am call it in and go back to sleep to wake up with breakfast in bed. My only point of contention is that even though every time I call I specifically ask them to toast my bagels they never do, with that said, I thank you egghead bagels as do the nameless girls who I've fed via your delicious morning deliveries.

Wow. Had my little diatribe censored by City Weekend. Let's try a less vulgar, more condensed version. The guest was visibly upset by the thirty minute wait time (diners kindly recall how an empty stomach can play a number on the nerves), and made animated complaints at the restauranteur, one Egghead. The restauranteur, Egghead, told the guests, to F#$@ off. Hmm. Egghead, huh. Very professional. A tip: read a book on conflict resolution strategy and service recovery. Just when you thought the service in Shanghai couldnt get any worse... off blow the doors!

Had the bagels. Never seen a bagel with what appeared to be an egg glaze before.... too thick, wrong consistency (but still chewier than an Ontarian bread donut, which is good). Too expensive for what you get, and not a real bagel in my opinion. Adequate bread product, but still a fair bit away from a real bagel- either Montreal or NYC.

Good bagels for Shanghai, but still off a bit. Can't help but still convert the RMB price I'm paying back to USD and realize how much of a rip off it is. Service is above average, but I really hope they improve the wait time, I mean it's just a bagel sandwich......

I came in this place many times. I found the service attitude excellent and the food up to my expectations and served reasonably fast. Never I had a single issue with food brought there, nor with the staff which was serving me.
The environment is simple and basic, and that's why I enjoyed being there and chill out on a Sunday afternoon. Shanghai is full of pretentious places where people could enjoy to be ripped off. This is not one of this, and I absolutely find a lot of value in the menu.
I feel sorry for this accident because these guys really don't deserve such publicity. I can't imagine what this moron frustrated spouse was saying, but surely the manager shouldn't have offended as well.
30 minutes is way too long (in Shanghai) to be served, communication was not done from the beginning to set time expectation on the order. This does not give any right to make an "Expat show". You can leave, you can write a bad review, you cannot behave like that.
Thankfully, the guys will not be sued for millions of dollars and I will keep enjoy my bagels, rejoicing that one less chance to find idiots in that place.

With customers like these it's amazing anyone bothers to open business to Expats. Never has there been a group (within a group) of people with their expectations more out of whack than the sort that feel the need to remind everyone about "how things work in America". "You could be sued..."!? So in your world there's nothing a customer can do that a business owner might find unreasonable or unacceptable? By virtue of handing over 45RMB that business (and the owner) become your slave and must submit to your abuse, no matter what? What country are you from again?
There's a chance this business owner did nothing wrong. Or that in this case the customer is actually right. Either way, they both have rights and deserve to have their voices heard.

This place has been around longer than I expected. Tried it just before they opened it and I didn't gave it a month. 45 Kuai for a tuna bagel! Respect please! , that's a major rip off considering that the place is aside Element Fresh delivery center and looks like a Denny's. LOL, unbelievable the comment from the manager she/he still dares to say that wasn't unprovoked..... The customer is always right.. Technically back in America you could be sued for asking a patron to leave your premises.

I remember one time I had to wait 30 minuets somewhere... at first I quite enjoyed the music, but after a while, I just wanted to throw something at the harpsichordist.

To JohnDonne We were very busy and we were doing the best we could do. Understand that not all items can be brought out instantaneously. When I asked your wife what I could do to make the experience more pleasant she decided that causing a scene, screaming and finger pointing were the best way to get what she wanted. I tried to reason with her but was subjected to more verbal abuse, at which point I lost my cool and reacted and asked your family to leave. I apologize for my actions and rudeness, however would not say it was unprovoked.
We attempt to treat all of our customers with respect and in return we expect to be treated the same way.
Horrible place. Waited 30 minuets and food never arrived our table. Wife tried to reason with the owner and the owner asked my wife to "xxxk off" in front of my baby daugther. Ruined my weekend. I have been to many local / foreign restaurant in Shanghai with unfriendly service but the level of unpleasant experience was redefined after this.

Still love this place and have been totally spoiled by the delivery - every weekend my daughter is always begging for Egghead Bagels! Overtime they have remained consistently good.

Totally satisfies that American bagel crav ing. We have gone multiple times and the food is always as good as the first time we went. Went tonight for dinner so instead of having coffee with a bagel I opted for a beer and bagel. I have no doubt we'll be back!

Definitely the place to get your bagel fix. Free wifi, good food, and a overall good vibe.
Will be back again and definitely a great addition to Shanghai's business lunch scene. For those of you who work in the area, take note.

Well I went and had a garlic bagel. I didn't see any garlic on the bagel, I could tatse it but no toasted garlic on the outside. It's close to a New York city bagel. It tatse better than the lady that makes bagels in Beijing. She has been making bagels for at least 7 years.

i came in and waited for my friend at abt 6 pm. rushed from work. they told me they're carrying out some renovation works in 15 mins inside the shop. i dont know if the bagels are good or not. but that was annoying.

I agree with lucipher, except her characterisation of a bad bagel as a 'California Bagel'-- you can get great bagels in Cali, sweetie, you just need to know where to look! The sad think about these bread-bagels is that they look absolutely GORGEOUS. They remind me of the big bagels on Brick Lane in London, which rival any in NY. I'm guessing this is a problem of ingredients. The cheapest eggs and flour here are just as bad as the cheapest eggs and flour back home. I'm not going to rate this place because I have hopes they'll upgrade their ingredients and it will become the temple of bagels it has the potential to be. More egg per bagel would be a good start!

Good service, clean environment and a busy street to people watch, Sunday mornings are sorted for a few weeks :-).
Have the Bagel and chilli Omelette breakfast set which was good value at 50 RMB, omelette was well cooked and full of flavour and the Bagel was a nice change as was the cream cheese which topped it off, Sherpa’s were in and out like flies so lot's of people chillin at home with bagels as well, go and enjoy.

I was definitely excited when I finally heard there's a bagel shop now in Shanghai. If there's one thing I miss from America, it is the good old new york bagels.
However, to my disappointment, the bagels here are nothing more than californian bagels, which are nothing more than bread shaped as a bagel. It's still good bread, but just not bagel...

Our visit here on Sunday made me very happy. The Omelet-Bagel Sandwiches are not too expensive and with a bottomless cup of coffee I can imagine a few people will start to be bench warming regulars here.
There is one piece of really interesting art on the walls but otherwise for now the decor is a little minimal - I'd like to see it warm up nicely to match the cool tunes played.
Very satisfied!

Just a few blocks from home, I've had opportunity to visit a few times. Bagels are fresh and delicious, toppings are generous and wait staff courteous, attentive. Freshly squeezed juice and flavorful coffee top it all off. Everything you'd want in a bagel shop and then some.

New Jersey-bred Henry Chang set out to fix Shanghai’s bagel deficit and has done so admirably. Evocative of a classic New York bagel joint, this spot’s got big windows for people-watching, Wi-Fi and strong coffee. We tucked into a lox cream cheese and capers bagelwich on an everything bagel (¥50) and a sesame bagel with bacon, egg and cheese (¥25). Each scrumptious, chewy bagel came with a baby spinach side salad with sautéed mushrooms and red and yellow tomatoes. We washed down our carbolicious meal with fresh squeezed orange juice (¥15) and a refreshing iced latté (¥22). After the city’s best bagels, we managed to polish off one of the toothsome black n’ white C’est Cupcake cupcakes (¥16) that they also have on offer. ■ Sophie Friedman Issue 11, May 20-June 2
