Brought to you by the same people behind Monkey Lounge, this eatery is a welcome addition to Donghu Lu. This French bar and bistro is a comfortable spot for lunch with a good selection of beers and cocktails (try their Bloody Mary), although the food is slightly on the pricier side. It's a great spot for brunch, but if you're in for dinner, be sure to finish with the molten chocolate cake.

Dakota is a casual, energetic, affordable neighborhood bistro on the edge of the old French Concession in downtown Shanghai. Serving soul-satisfying riffs on American and French cooking, sophisticated cocktails by our award-winning mixologist, irresistible fresh breads and desserts from our on-site bakery, and a great selection of music by our in-house DJ; it's an easy-going, comfortable place open from brunch to late night supper.
Claim a spot on the patio for an espresso, meet friends for a cocktail or one of our Belgian beers at our generous, convivial bar; or settle into the banquets and kick back with a leisurely dinner, perhaps with a bottle of wine from our reasonably priced wine list.

Had dinner there recently and thought the place was nice. The food might be slightly over price but considering the location, it's expected. Service was nice and efficient. Although...the french onion soup was disappointing. Some broth with a piece of bread floating in it and a sage on top....

Had a good dinner there, had 4 appetizers and 1 mains to share between the 2 of us. I felt the escargot was a little too cheesy for my taste but otherwise food was good. For the mains, had the hamburger, meat was excellent although the bread type was not the type that I preferred. Overall, I love the ambience and the service, and the food - good classic american dishes. I'm definitely coming back.

Had brunch here on Saturday and thought it was a little meh and overpriced. The eggs benedict - which are tiny and come with no sides - are RMB55 and a cup of coffee was RMB30 - average. The eggs were fine - the english muffins were nice, and I substituted sauteed spinach for ham at no extra cost - but too small a portion for the price. Service is very good here, and the atmosphere is nice.

I stopped by with friends there for the first time today for dinner. I ordered Pork Chops with sides of Spinach and Asparagus - was hungry. The Pork Chops were awesome - tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. I almost couldn't finish it, but was too good to waste. The only thing I didn't like was the orange juice - was freshly squeezed but they must have had a bad patch as it wasn't as sweet as I would have liked. But overall a thumbs up and I'm going back!

Went to the Berkeley alumni last Thursday for Happy Hour. Caught up with alot of old friends, some I didn't even know was living in Shanghai. Good deal - had alot of different selections for 2 for 1, including wine and beer. Had a great time...

Never good to have RATS running around a restaurant. Had a nice dinner with my gf at Dakota this week. Food good, service pretty good. That was before my gf saw something move near the ceiling. I looked and saw a huge RAT scurrying along one of the beams above the tables. The manager said he knew about the problem, but that they are hard to get rid of. They are working on it and trying to use traps. Perhaps they should close until the problem is fixed? Wouldn't that show more concern for their customers' well-being?

Haven't been to Donghu Lu in ages and was surprised to stumble across this great bar with a terrific beer selection, wonderful decor, plus friendly and smartly-dressed staff. Leffe Dark on tap - what a shocking and fantastic find. I'm looking for an excuse to go back to this place.

Went through when I walked by and decided to give it try. No expectations, but was surprised by the great food. It's near my office so stopped by for the brisket sandwich for lunch - awesome. Later I went back with friends for happy hour and had their sirloin - think it's one of the best in Shanghai. Definitely worth the trip there...

[HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]European | Dakota[HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED][HTML_REMOVED]July 2010[HTML_REMOVED] [HTML_REMOVED]Newly opened by the owners of Monkey Bar, Dakota serves up a French-tinged, European menu. After enjoying a stunning brunch during the restaurant’s soft opening that came complete with one of the best Bloody Marys (¥80) this side of the Pacific, we went back for an evening encore with high hopes that, unfortunately, were not realized during our three-course dinner. Despite the high-grade ingredients, almost every dish has a fatal flaw–usually in the seasoning department. The onion soup gratinée (¥40) has a deep, beefy broth but is completely bland. The charcuterie board (¥120) contains a very tasty pork rillette and good cuts of salty prosciutto and salami but the rabbit and fois gras terrine are all texture and no taste. The steak tartare (¥95) is spot on and deliciously tangy but was nearly ruined by the stale bread with which it was served. Our salmon main (¥120) was lovely in the middle but overcooked on the ends. The lobster risotto (¥90) was flecked with generous shavings of truffle and had an aromatic savory flavor but the lobster itself was rubbery and the dish was so dry that its appearance resembled a platter of confetti fried rice. The biggest disappointment was our truffled mac and cheese (¥40) which was a flavorless bowl of saucy noodles. The desserts (¥60 each) were also hit-and-miss. The banana crème brûlée is too dense and unappetizingly lukewarm but the molten chocolate cake is heavenly. Served piping hot and quivering on the side, dark chocolate oozed out instantly when our forks touched the surface. It was the only dish where we picked the plate clean. [HTML_REMOVED]■ Dan Ouyang
