This three-floor microbrewery has some of the best beers in Puxi. They’ve got good American pub grub, bar games and at least three of their micro-brews on tap at all times. Check out their patio in the summer when they get the barbecue going outdoors.

surprisingly bad experience - i made a reservation and we were sat on the 2nd floor. firstly, the door to the balcony for the smokers was broken so we were sitting in the cold. secondly, the service was appalling - the first server did not know if they had cider. then when we ordered the ribs (which was not cheap), we got a lump of fatty meat. when we complained about the food, the server shrugged her shoulder and said this was the standard. seriously sad experience :(

They also have a great selection for Brunch, just what we needed when we met friends here one Sunday

Went to dinner at the Fuxing road location just for some simple wind week's end wind down. Instead, I got a wind-up! Service is particularly bad since there is only one competent person managing the wait staff. It took 40mins for our food to arrive, then another 5 minutes for our drinks to arrive. When they messed up our order, three waitresses tried to persuade my friend to take something they didn't order. Finally when the one competent manager came, the waitress STILL insisted my friend should take the wrong order. With that said, the dining experience is pretty much ruined. Doesn't matter how good the steak salad or hamburger was, the waitstaff is horrendous. This is a place I will not go for a Friday night get-together. The Sinan mansion location is much better since all the competent foreign wait staff has been relocated there but please, invest some money in staff training!

Where are all these reviews coming from?? "Great food"? "Divine"? "Had a blast"? "Best buffalo wings in Shanghai"? I don't want to be rude but I know many people who have been to Boxing Cat and nobody would describe it like that. In fact I've heard more complaints about the food there than compliments. And also I find the food to be mediocre at best. "wicked hot wings" are barely even spicy and were soo average. A guy I know from Seattle even said that the KFC fried chicken is better than Boxing Cat's.
One of the reviews says that you can see the beer being brewed there. Where? I asked and they said there is no brewing there. Are the people making these reviews going somewhere else and thinking it's Boxing Cat? How could so many reviews be disconnected from reality?
The building that Boxing Cat is in is an attractive old building constructed of red bricks. I like that. But it is rather small and the place needs some maintanance. Boxing Cat want to be a sports bar by showing some sports no tv but you can't play pool without having to use a half length pool cue.

Great food and nice beers. I would suggest them to serve colder beers - either adjust the draft beer system or maybe put the glass in the freezer, as they do in Japan OR maybe do both because summer is hear now and all we need it cold beer. Cheers!

Boxing Cat gets the JIJ Rating of 4 stars. Quality, reliable, american food in good setting. Can't go wrong.

I love the Boxing Cat! I am never disappointed! Great beer, great food and friendly staff. I Have never had bad service at this bar. The patio is wicked and the atmosphere inside is nice and cozy.

Hadn't been there for over six months. Went this time on an early Sunday afternoon for brunch and the place was less crowded than usual. Had Eggs Benedito, poached eggs over chilli with hollandaise sauce which was fresh and delicious. Friends in the same party had gravy over biscuits which looked good also. The coffee was excellent. Waitress attentive. All together, it was a wonderful experience. Will go more often.

I came here for a drink with a friend even though I don't like beer and I was pleasantly surprised by the MASSIVE salads... they were HUGE and quite tasty. Of course I wouldn't recommend coming JUST for the food but it was a nice surprise... try it out.

Totally recommend this place. Went there last night with some friends and had a blast. Really nice to see some beer being brewed right on the premises. The staff was friendly and the food was heaping portions for the price. Will definately return!

Went last night because I was craving some good fried chicken and Boxing Cat did not disappoint. I lived in Mississippi for a while so I have pretty high brow opinions on what good fried chicken should taste like and I was more then satisfied by the Cat's offering. The chicken was accompanied by generous topping of gravy and a rosemary biscuit, the perfect additions. This meal was pretty much what I had been hoping for and I was very happy with my meal. Bear was great, can't remember the name but it was the darker of the beers on tap and I enjoyed it. Also the peanut butter crunch cake was really tasty so try it next time you stop by. A mix of reese's peanut buttercups and peanut butter cheesecake. yum.

Nice American food: Excellent chicken wings, good chili cheese fries. Surely always good for a simple dinner. Service was not too attentive, but for such category of restaurant ok. I'll come back for the Chicken Wings.

I had a great experience here the other night. Food proportions are more than generous and I loved my beer. Not so sure I would like their other beers, but mine (the Helles Lager one) was great. Service was beyond great.

Double disappointment. It can happen, even when visiting a place you like – I have strongly recommended the Cat for their beer and it was still good. This visit, however, was marred by two problems. First: a friendly manager promoted the “day’s special”, in this case, a beef brisket. My antenna should have gone up when she said “I had it YESTERDAY and really liked it” but I ordered it anyway. Second missed clue: when I ordered it the server said “oh, you got one of the last two portions!” – this was before 7 PM on a very slow night, indeed the slowest I’ve seen there. Result: tough “dog tongue” type meat that was obviously a left-over from YESTERDAY’S special. Second: my wife ordered shrimp pasta, and asked for parmesan cheese. When we got the bill, saw we were charged 10 RMB for it!! On this second offense, I went ballistic. The manager apologized profusely – several times – and took it off the bill, but the damage to our evening was done. Did not, repeat not, go to the third floor to shoot pool over more beer as had planned. I recalled that on a prior visit I had complained about this same issue (more politely), but since it prints out on the bill as “Cheese, 10.00” it’s obviously management policy to sucker the suckers who don’t check. Bottom line: even from a place I generally enjoy, I won’t tolerate what I consider to be “sharp practices” (just try to imagine what the world would be like with ten top Wall St bankers in jail cells instead of on yachts!). A “day’s special” is defined as THAT DAY’s freshly-made food, not yesterday’s. And charging 10 RMB for a tiny bit of grated cheese (which the server dutifully recovered as soon as we were done eating!) is just reprehensible. Bottom line: will I stop going to the Cat over this? No – but I won’t likely consider eating their “specials” any more, learned my lesson that it’s better to stick to the simple stuff like the chili and pulled pork which has never gone wrong. I am looking forward to try their new location opening near Fuxing Park in October, and hope they’ll deal with these bad practices before they open.

I've posted before on the hot dogs here, which are tops. On Sunday I was schvitzing, as always, and ordered a black and white milkshake. It was divine.

Food is good but a bit pricey. Beer is mediocre. Ambiance and music is great though. Very cozy spot. Be warned...lot's of mosquitos if you are sitting outside.

The Lowdown: There are a million reasons why this place could be good, but, aside from the location and outdoor/sidewalk bar, The Boxing Cat doesn't know a single one of them. Here's why: We booked a reservation for 4. When we arrived, they had no record. No worries, though, as the place was sparsely taken. Like most pubs, the TBC menu is stocked w/ good-sounding comfort food/pub grub. But, instead of comfort, only guilt comes from consumption of TBC fare. The delivered product falls way short of reasonable expectation and is not even as advertised on their menu. How bad is the food? Think a few notches below cafeteria. And, the beer? 3 choices: "light lager" (how creative), "red lager" (WTF!) and "dark beer" (not that it tasted like a dark, but it's friggin' August in Shanghai!). Yes, we were warned, but for grins, we tried them. Bland, indistinct, unworthy of consumption and nothing remotely hinting at the veracity of an American microbrew. TBC should just stop brewing altogether (and stop pretending they are up to the task in this area) and just shoot for a good bottled selection. In fact, TBC is leading the uninitiated woefully astray and doing the Chinese a disservice and westerners (especially Americans) an injustice by fronting itself as "down home," "American," and a "brewpub." Bottom line: Don't come here for the beer or the food. Except for the friendly service, this place hemorrhages w/ disappointment (and guilt). The gory details: The cheese fries arrived first to the table: Sparsely topped with bland (a theme here) cheese and further topped w/ what we believed to be sour cream, except, whatever it was, it was way too sweet (another theme here) to be strictly sour cream. The fries were wet and soggy and fused together to form a mound of one and not much more than mashed potato strips encased by a thin, un-browned skin. These were just horrid, as if they were dropped in a clump from a frozen pouch and boiled. Plain mashed potats would have been preferrable. Anyway, no need for ketchup. And good thing, as the innards of the bottle at our table looked hours away from growing fur. Next to arrive - the bowl of chili. Oily and, again, bland. Somewhere between cafeteria and Hormel tin. The beer: 3 choices: Irredeemably bland, bland, and bland. The wings - which were advertised as "nuclear hot" were browned and decent, but seemingly devoid of spice. They were mild and underwhelming - neutral, really. The accompanying "blue cheese" for dipping was thin and watery and would just run off the wings. In a blind taste test, only a guess would have produced the answer of "blue cheese." Next up: The "Southern-style" pulled pork sandwich with salad and cole slaw. The sandwich came with a Titanic-sized kaiseresque roll; the meat was overtly sweet and lacking the essential "pulled" texture and vinegar tang - and any other nuance. Having lived in North Carolina, I know a few things about what this particular item (and cole slaw) should be like. The salad and cole slaw (singularly sweet) were uneventful. The Reuben sandwich arrived next, not with grilled pumpernickel or rye bread, but with huge, thick slabs of grilled and buttered white bread! Insult to injury was the dull "Swiss" cheese and the paltry presence of sauerkraut - neither of which were detectable without subsequent visual inspection. Further insult was the presence of seed mustard (why?) and no "Russian dressing" as a proper Reuben would have and as was listed on the menu! We substituted "sweet potato fries" for the regular fries that came with the plate. We were flummoxed by the appearance and flavor of these "fries." They lacked the color of sweet potato and appeared to be sugar-encrusted. We bit and, lo and behold, they were actually SWEETENED potato fries! They looked and tasted like (barely cooked) french toast sticks! Please pass the maple syrup, hon. These people are amateurs. Won't get fooled again.

Exterior demands attention, however the interior is quite small and cramped. The seating on the second floor feels like cafeteria style. The beer was fun to try. Quite delicious house blends. The food was ok. My GOLDEN RULE: PRESENTATION IS 9/10ths of the Law.... and if I can't unwind and completely relax, i'm not coming back.

Beer! Yes, real brewed beer! The entrees here are pricey, but the atmosphere is fun, and it's great for drinks with yummy appetizers to snack on. A plate of nachos from Boxing Cat will feed at least two people. It's great with beer :)

You don’t have to hail from the USA to feel at home in this all-American brewery in a French Concession lane house. Enjoy hearty portions of authentic BBQ and grandma’s almond pie outside on the sunny patio. With at least three in-house brews always on tap, you can taste some of the best beer in Shanghai while shooting pool or watching the game.

Outstanding Pulled Pork Sandwich.. and a very decent portion too. I love the fluffy soft bun that's about 8" long and stuffed full of tender pulled pork with lashings of sauce. Beware though - there is a lot of gravy and sauce so the whole meal is a pretty messy one - good to eat it caveman style ;)
Dont' forget to finish it off with their Velvet Cake - a luscious buttery cake with lots of cream. Mmmm...!
Oh, and I should also point out, the young chef there is mighty good looking................

I'm sorry to say but this is just not what it was a year ago...maybe I grew out of it. The drinks are good, but last year's was better (possibly due to the fact that one of my best friends worked there and bartended for us), the 4th of july party's still pretty awesome.
The food definitely satisfies me on the rare occasion that I miss american food.

had a group dinner during the world cup round robin play...these places are what i have come to feel is the strongest offerings in shanghai - restaurants that offer a good combination of comfort, service, food and price points around 150rmb! and we saw our home country win!
we had the sliders which were great, the wings are probably the best i've had in Shanghai thus far if u like buffalo wings, and the pulled pork was ok...for mains, i'd say that for a casual restaurant the fried chicken was fantastic, and my bf's burger was great - for salads we shared the steak salad and it was not bad...didn't have the sandwiches others had but they all seemed to like the taste but beware, portions are definitely huge
as a group i think we decided the microbrew beers were a hit, especially the helles, and the desserts are hugely sinful but sooo tasty - personal fav was the chocolate crunch with peanut butter! for ambiance we're on the 2nd floor so non smoking is a nice change of pace with the rampant smoking in China...all in all good value for my money, which is quite refreshing in Shanghai

I recently visited the Boxing Cate for the first time, and it was a good experience overall. They had some quality service, and the food was great. If you're planning on going for dinner, I recommend the reuben or the pulled pork. I'm originally from pennsylvania, so I've been to a few microbreweries back home. This place was a good combination of brewery and restaurant, and the atmosphere was real nice. If you sit outside, be prepared for the heat, we had to move inside, this Shanghai summer is tough. For beers, definitely get the IPA if they have it on tap. -DS

Why Boxing Cat is BAD… Last weekend, over 20 people went to celebrate a couple of birthdays. We were told that the restaurant would be too busy to serve the normal menu so we were forced to have a buffet style dinner. (but the restaurant was pretty empty the whole time we were there-- 7 to 10pm on a Saturday night). The main course included only chicken and beef—with 3 sides: vegetables, macaroni & cheese, and mashed potatoes. The taste was ok, but not worth 200RMB per person. People were still hungry, but they said no more food will be served. So much for offering a buffet! 2 drinks were included, but their wine taste like vinegar. Beer is ok though. I’ll give them that. To make matters worse, the manager tried to charge us for people who didn’t show up! First, not enough food for those that WERE there, then they charge for people who didn’t come! He had a horrible attitude and obviously doesn’t know the benefits of having repeat customers.

VERY BAD service. The manager should be fired. He doesn't know how to do business. Food is BAD. I guess the beer is ok. Wine is BAD. I DO NOT recommend this place, especially if you have a large place. There are too many good places in Shanghai to waste your time here.

Boxing Cat, what can I say: I really love your hot dogs.

At 45 RMB for a four beer sampler, the Boxing Cat makes it into my good book based on price alone. As I went on a Monday, I can't vouch for the Cat's weekend scene, but two friends and I got a table on the patio immediately. I will vouch for the quesadillas, twice over. Service was quick but not pushy; we just wanted drinks and appetizers, and our waiter left us to consume both. I liked the Right Hook Helles and TKO Pale Ale, wasn't sure about the Wild Mild, and did not like the Brewer's Choice. But with a sampler, that's what you would expect. Basically, a good outdoor bar with some good beer, and I'll return to try the Smokey Porter.

Excellent Beer and great ambiance, great for summer drinks.

I'm a huge fan of their beers — the stout takes some getting used to, but the selection is on point. I skip the restaurant and head for the third floor every time I visit Boxing Cat. The bar area with pool table and dart board is way more appealing.

All this place has going for it was the atmosphere. We sat at a table outside, only to be 'rained' on by seeds from the tree above us. A manager/owner came over after we complained and put up a large sunshade to stop the problem, then about 20 mins later, another manager came over and removed the shade as he said it was blocking the TV that nobody was watching - even after we explained the seed problem. So our beer and food again got rained on with seeds so the manager could watch the basketball game, yet this alone did not in fact ruin the food as it was horrible to begin with, Fish and Chips (with clam?) were a far far cry from anything resembling real fish and chips - basically a 2x0.5 inch piece of fish surrounded by a one inch coat of "pogo" batter that couldn't be passed off as fish and chips from a carnival stand, Hamburger was ok but made with grade c meat, full of bone and cartilage. Nacho's were average at best, and I mean average in comparison to Shanghai's restos only. Ok for a place to get a few beers and hang out with friends, but fill up before you go and give the food a miss.

Sooooo looking forward to this!

Best beer in Shanghai!! That is not such an easy claim to justify, since there are outlets of the renowned German Paulaner and Hofbrauhaus dotted around Shanghai. However, for me (and my belly speaks to my credentials as a beer connoisseur), the difference lies in the soul – while the Paulaner products are technically perfect, like a top-of-the-line black Mercedes saloon, Boxing Cat’s beers have that quirkiness and excitement of a red Ford Mustang, circa 1975 – each one is different, and each of them is made with an individual character such that someone will think they are too (light, heavy, bitter, sweet) etc. The Cat offers a range of 10 of them, with typically American-brewpub names like “Right Hook Helles”, and usually three of them plus a “Brewer’s Choice” or experimental beer are available any given evening. Even better, they’re only 35 RMB the pint during Happy Hour – a great deal as compared to laying out 75 RMB or so at Paulaner. As for the food, some reviewers have noted it’s uneven so that’s probably true. I have never been disappointed by the Cat’s interpretations of classic American pub favorites like the cheeseburger sliders (65 RMB) and pulled-pork sandwiches (a rarity in the Hai!) as well as their free (on request) potato chips. Atmosphere is very laid back with a pleasant – but too small for fine-weather demand – outdoor patio, and there is also a wonky pool table fighting for space with a dartboard on the third floor. Service is friendly but rushed… they don’t follow the American model of a fixed server for your table but grab-who-goes-by which accounts for some bloopers. All in all, the Cat is a welcome oasis for those wishing to relax and imbibe a little American culture along with some great beers, for which the rating is given. Two can eat and drink for 300 RMB or less.

this place is a pretty sure bet. best atmosphere for a burger and beer joint...hands down. just give me more pool tables....that ain't missin' the 9 ball!! :)

Loooooove that Heine!

Took my little siblings there tonight, here is the run-down:
Drinks came fsat, so did the house beer, I had the india pale ale, much better than what I was expecting. My brother had somthing lighter, did not complain then again he knows nothing about beer. Beef goulash came first along with my wife's bbq chicken salad. Beef was tender but MAYBE it should arrive as an entre and not a starter? The salad was overseasoned with dressing for my taste, the chicken breast tasted ok. The slow roasted ribs with chickpeas were good, the meat practically fell off the bones, this I know takes time and effort. The chic peas for also good but the sauce was too "expected" perhaps if the chef has just a stock reduction with some butter chives and garlic it would have fared better. The cajun chicken sandwich was my favorite as it was something completely explained as is in the menu. Chicken a bit on the dry side and only served with ranch dressing (mayo and sour cream is NOT blue cheese dressing) a side tomatillo salsa would have brightened up an arleady likable sandwich. Finally, the chilli cheese fries. WRONG type of fries used. the wide surface area on these fries GUARANTEES the bottom mess will be a sloppy goo even before you get down to it. You want to use skinny fries (3/8 in), fried twice if can to have a shell to cope with the chili, this was the letdown of the night. I had a scampi pasta to go, looked ok in the box, and we finished a apple pie. Can someone tell me why the crust of the pie is soft like a cake ad not crusty? It was strange but enjoyable nevetheless. This being a generally a spots bar and me being a foodie, I give this place 3.5 Stars (worth coming back to, if you're in the area already)
the street where the restaurant locates is pretty and quiet. and the big beer brewery tuns at the entrance gate are very eye-catching....and i like the red-bricks building....
i went there for brunch, ordered an " egg benedito" . It is very creamy, maybe due to the hollandaise sause, and is served with sauteed potatoes and arugula which i like.
Pleasantly suprised by the food, attention to detail was duly noted. House brewed beer was meh however; lacked a nice bite or finish, justed tasted soft and bit watered down for how amber/dark they appeared. Overall I'd go back for the food itself, but order bottles until the house brew sorts itself out.

Love this place... has a Cheers vibe... everyone knows each other. The owners are always around and keep a keen eye on service and atmosphere. Food is amazing... friend chicken and sliders might be the best in Shanghai. And they brew their own beer... I met the brew master Gary... from TX... been brewing beer for decades.
Enjoy.

Fried chicken is pretty tasty. Deserts are good too. The hamburger is not good at all...filled with tendons and using cheap meat (since it's filled with tendons). Things on the menu are hits or misses..just be careful how you choose. Loud atmosphere too.

Celebrated my birthday here last Saturday... It was TERRIBLE! I ordered my food (a hamburger) and after 1.5 hours it never arrived to I decided to cancel it, when the bill arrived they charged it so I told the waiter to take it off the bill as I never received it, after a while she said that it was ok that but that she would pay for the hamburger out of her own money... i felt bad and still gave her the hamburger money, after a while, as we were a large group we decided to pay as we ordered, I ordered a beer and instantly paid, and my change never came back, when i asked the waiter about my change, (same as the hamburger problem) she said she had already given it to somebody else, i asked around nobody got it, so of course i still demanded for my change, and then again after a while she said she would have to give it out of her own pocket, being the second time i didn't believe it and still demanded my change
There is one possibility out of 3:
Management charges their waiters for problems they had in the kitchen (hamburger situation)
The waiter was stealing the money
The waiter is rich and can pay for the hamburger that never came, and the change that she "gave" to someone else...

A cool place with great beers and delicious foods! Casual and cozy villa, nice and warm services with reasonable price.

- Food is great.
- Beer is good.
- Service is excellent.
Well done guys!

Cheese grits. I haven't had cheese grits in ten years. Served with short ribs, this was one of the best western meals I've had in China. Sharp, hoppy glass of IPA to wash it down with sure didn't hurt either. I had the pulled pork sandwich the time before and it nearly brought tears to my eyes. I really did cry on the way back to Pudong, though...

Free pneumonia with every glass! This was a nice place in the summer, but thanks to cheap construction and inadequate heat, most patrons who arrive in the winter have to keep their coats and hats on. Are the owners so poor that they have to treat customers like this?

Great locally brewed beer for rmb45, I wouldn't ask for more in Shanghai. Enjoyed every time we hang out there. Very good nachos too!! The only thing I don't like about them is choices for beer is getting less and less each time I go. Please keep up the good work!

We went there for the 3rd time last weekend, and always enjoyed it. I know I shouldn't compare to the quality back home, but I still hope they offer most of the choices on the menu daily, and making the beer even more flavorful (is it because of the water here?). Nachos was great, and went very nicely with beer. Price is very reasonable.
the place is too crowded for me, me and my mum hard to get through in such a noisy place.

Love the Burger! Unfortanately my friends were not so lucky with their meals. But excellent customer service, which is rare to find. Wish they had the pale ales available more often. Pulled Pork mini sandwiches are great too.

I went to Boxing Cat Brewery last week night, I had their special smoked beef and my friend got braised short ribs that was recommended by Ellaine. After we finished dinner,I went downstairs to smoke, here's other staff named Mark that was so friendly and hospitable,he grab a chair for me and we had a sensible chat. The two staff are the best!!and I highly recommend them for higher position! They are the best asset in the restaurant,I never had the most wonderful night out here in Shanghai before I only experienced here in Boxing Cat!Great service, good food and one of the Best Beer! Can't wait to see a new branch Boxing cat in the city!

Nice beer, which is a bit pricey considering they don't have the "excuse" of saying it's imported. Food is average - fills a hole, but not much else.

We are closed for Lunch for the Winter Season. Open Schedule starting Dec 14th is: Mon - Thurs 5pm - 2am, Fri 3pm - 2am, Sat & Sun 11am - 2am. Thank you!

I am a big fan of this place - proper beers, big portions of food at a reasonable price, great location and setting - a group of us got cheeseburger sliders, warm lentil and artichoke salad, country fried chicken - all were great! And the desserts we got - Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch and Red Velvet cake are really really awesome. Their staff are nice people as always, and i am glad to have a great place to make it into a restaurant for great fun, food and beer!

Beer tasted like it was brewed last year, stale. Food was decent, music was retro 90's which is OK with me except lose the Goo Goo Dolls...
Crowd seemed like they were obligated to be there, was a bit uncomfortable. Pay attention to whats on TV too please, German football instead of Champions League at same time?

The red velvet cake is good when it's moist. Maybe they should try this recpie instead: http://www.delish.com/recipes/cooking-recipes/baked-red-hot-velvet-cake-cinnamon-buttercream-recipe

Nice beer, but selection always seem limited. Went there for lunch, only 3 types of beer available. Food is average at best. Nice to have a kids' menu, so my kids ordered the fried chicken. Not bad, a little soggy. My husband and I tried the pulled port sandwich. The pulled pork was not warm, and the bun was the soft chewy type. Service is acceptable.
Probably won't go back for the food, but beer is okay. Happy Hour specials is ok, not the usual Buy 1 get 1, but the beer is 35RMB instead of the usual 45RMB.
I like beer, a lot, but wouldn't come back to BCB for it. I might however be willing to check out the other location, to see if something is lost in transport, as I do like the idea of brew pubs growing in Shanghai. On the positive side, the food was good, except not willing to budge on some extra sauce. Com'n, it's just sauce, I promise not to tell anyone. Owner understands the definition of service, just needs to work on being more genuine about it and teaching the rest of the team. Although assume its only a temporary job for him. Bottom-line: Won't be back unless someone else is paying.

Disappointing

Beer was good. Only three choices but good taste. Service was fantastic! We got the Ruben sadwich and the pulled Pork.. Very generous portions and very delicious. Wings and grits were also good. Will go again.

New Eats | Hop Hop Hooray
This Minhang-area restaurant and microbrewery opened a second branch on Fuxing Lu, offering a good selection of American South inspired fare alongside a rotation of artisan beers. So we ordered two of the three beers on tap that day, ¥100 pitchers of the Brewer’s Choice beer (the light but flavorful Hopzilla) and Boxing Cat’s chocolaty stout to accompany a couple of starters.
We shared a plate of the chili fries (¥45), mildly spicy but generously topped with chili and cheese, while we played a quick game of pool, and then further upped our beer intake with a warm loaf of perfectly seasoned beer bread (¥25). We soon sat down for our entrées, beginning with a juicy Californian chicken club sandwich (¥80), served with steak fries and a heaping side of tangy coleslaw, before moving on to the diablo shrimp pasta (¥78). Topped with a Parmesan white wine sauce, clams and scallops, it’s a great dish that manages to stay light despite a touch of peppery chili.
Our favorite, however, was the barbecued pulled pork sandwich (¥75). Tender, succulent and altogether delicious, it was one of the most satisfyingly messy dishes we’ve had in a long while.

Family friendly - kids menu (coloring placemat), great beers and good adult food. We've eaten here 3 times (breakfest too) since they opened and seen a huge improvement with the staff - I think at first they were a bit overwhelmed by the response/need for a great brewery in Puxi, but they open to suggestions. Can't wait to go back!

Its Lee From The Boxing Cat here ~ just wanted to clarify that the Boxing Cat aims to offer 4 beers at any given time, while switching in a new beer every 2-3 weeks for our patrons to try. As the beers are brewed in limited batches and kegged over from our min hang location, we do occasionally sell out of one of the beers and we appreciate the support from our customers in allowing that to happen! Furthermore we try to brew each beer true to its original style and we're always going to provide beers that will be much more flavorful than the commercially water down versions available at your local supermarkets and taps. Its for this reason that we hope everyone can keep enjoying the beer and food we do at the Cat! Thanks for everyone's continued love and support and we'll try to continue to work hard to make every experience a better one.
Jury is still out on this place:
Beer: 10 beers listed but only 4 available and they were down to 3 by 9pm - sounds really dodgy? The Pilsner was really yeasty and we were not impressed with the overpowering Sucker Punch. Is this really the best beer selection in Shanghai? Give me a dry Asahi anytime.
Crowd: Not a place for hot dates. There were rowdy drinking parties, rowdy dice games, rowdy beer-guzzling locals. The staff were seriously-overworked and almost overlooked the leaky ceilings near the LCD TV. Not good.
Food: As good as it can get for pub food. The pulled pork tasted more like honey than pork. The 'slaw was more like stringy rabbit food. And the carrot soup had more broccoli than carrots. Nice beef stew tho.
Hoping it was just a bad night? Would like to give this place and the friendly ABC manager another try if they get their beer selection sorted.

If you are into authentic Texas B-B-Q, this is the place to be! The BBQ Pulled-Pork sandwich is so tender and juicy that it melts right into your mouth, result of patient cooking no doubt. The coleslaw has this original mustard flavor, which, if you like it hot, is a side you must have. Then they have a hamburger slider, which consists of four fresh bite-sized hamburgers, great for sharing among friends. On the evening we were there, the chef had us try out two new kinds of chicken wings, BBQ and Buffalo. The BBQ wings were to die for and I would order off the menu next time I go. The Buffalo wings were so hot that my taste buds went numb for couple hours. If you can't find food hot enough, the Boxing Cat has several menu items that present a fair challenge. And the non-spicy BBQ items are great as well.
Overall, we had a great hearty American meal for about 100RMB per person. And I can't wait to go back.

this place is beautiful. just like cantina it has a good and unpretentious vibe. we have been four times since they are open. love their rubens and the fried maccaroni and cheese are so yum. brunch on sunday was a bit of a letdown. one dish never arrived while the chef was hanging out on the terrace. the fried chorizo dish sounded fab but was not. the jalapenos killed the flavors of the chorizo and the cheap cheese had no taste at all. dishes did not arrive together. fruit platter was lame. maybe that was a one off. i would not mind paying a couple of extra rmb if they would use better bread. service was soso and not even close to their staff in their location out west. two home brewed beers on offer for a brewery??? i guess i'm just being a bitch because i like this place and do not want it to be like so many other mediocre spots - and the other location is just too far away.

50RMB entry fee on 4th July with one plastic cup of beer was not so appealing........... but Carlton J Smith and his crew made up for it all!!!!!!!!! He rocks!

Just went on July 1st to celebrate Canada Day with my staff. The food is absolutely amazing. Try the Diablo Shrimp Pasta and Southern Gumbo. Portions are generous so expect some leftover to take back - gumbo is actually better the day after!!!
I'm not a big beer fan but the home brewed Pilsner was really refreshing. Take advantage of the opening Happy Hour. It's really worth it!!!

I went by on sat for a birthday party. Great quite location with a beautiful lay out. There are 3 stories to this house. Reminds me of a few places back home.
The home brewed brew was actually pretty good. And for 50rmb a pitcher, I was not complaining at all. The finger food they had were pretty tasty as well.
I will be going back for sure.

Boxing Cat Brewery - Fuxing Xi Lu Three levels of wooden floors, comfy seating, casual tunes and some of the best (and only) micro-brewed beer in Shanghai. There’s also a menu of southern American dishes such as pulled pork sandwiches (RMB75) and chicken with biscuits (RMB80) to soak up the brews. Super-attentive staff, led by manager Lee Tseng, make it a place hard to leave.

Come on down to the Boxing Cat. We're a locally brewed American Microbrewery & Restaurant offering Modern American cuisine with Southern Creole influences. Whether it's hanging out on our outdoor patio, having dinner inside or playing pool in our 3rd floor bar, there's something for everyone! We're conveniently located in the French Concession in an old brick house. Come see what everyone is talking about!

Believe it or not, there is more to beer than Tsingtao and, in Shanghai, we have Boxing Cat Brewery to thank for that. This popular brewery, which is now soft opening its second location on Fuxing Lu, brews its own beer on the premises. If you can’t decide between the four beers on tap, opt for the sampler (¥45), which is as generously portioned as the food on their down-home Southern menu. While the Wild Mild Ale thrilled and the Ol’ Smoky Porter made us fantasize about barbecued ribs, their Right Hook Helles Lager won us over. Master Brewer Gary Heyne has crafted an über-drinkable thirst quencher that even your umbrella-drink-loving girlfriend will like. This light, refreshing lager is malty and golden, with just the perfect amount of carbonation to keep it fresh. Manager Lee Tseng recommends pairing it with a plate of their Fists of Fury chicken wings. There’s no aftertaste, just pure, uncomplicated pleasure, which is more than most can say about their other summer dalliances. Lingbo Li
