Dianshan Lake is the largest body of freshwater in Shanghai. Interlinked with Suzhou Creek, someday we may be taking our adventurers there via the waterways. Shaped like a calabash (gourd), it covers an area of 63 square kilometers (12 times the size of West Lake in Hangzhou) and has an average depth of 2 meters. Dianshan Lake gets its name from Dianshan Hill lying the in the middle of the lake. This lake is host to the international rowing (training and competition) venues. Quaint fishing villages dot the shores and make for interesting exploring.
Route Description:
In just under an hour from Shanghai, this area provides some fresh air with a mix of trails and road riding. The ride starts with a cruise through 2 local semi abandoned lake side parks with quiet paths, bamboo grooves, wooden huts and temples. After this quiet area we head south of the lake circling through some of the local fishing villages and farm fields - small bridges, fish farms and some single track await with us. After a lake edge stop for lunch, we hit the pavement for the last stretch.
