- Contributor Description:
“Elegant Chinese Music of Shanghai” refers to neither a particular music ensemble nor a special form of Chinese music. Accurately speaking, it is in the first place a musical brand of good reputation in China.
Wang Long, the leader and organizer of the Outstanding Women Orchestra of the East, initiated the said musical art form. Graduating from the Beijing Central Conservatory in 1997 and serving in the Shanghai National Music Ensemble from 1997 to 2005, Wang Long is a young but reputable “Guqin” player (a sort of ancient Chinese stringed musical instrument similar to zither) and “Yangqin” performer (a dulcimer-like stringed musical instrument). Traveling widely, over the past dozen of years, with the Shanghai National Music Ensemble to more than 10 overseas countries and regions, she has either performed as a chief player in the Vienna Golden Music Hall, or been invited as an individual player to perform in the New York Carnegie Music Hall. In addition, she has given marvelous performances on many other occasions as well, including the Shanghai International Art Festival, the Shanghai Spring Art Festival, the opening ceremony of Beijing APEC Wealth Forum and the opening ceremony of Shanghai Television Festival. In 2005 when the Chinese premier visited India and Bhutan, the Ensemble was invited by the State Council to perform in these two countries, thus disseminating the traditional Chinese culture.
