I think absolutely the most essential item for a picnic basket is your cold alcoholic drink such as wine cooler or champagne because without this your whole mood is just not set right from the beginning. Once you are in the mood.. well it hard to figure out which is more important next, beautifully roasted chicken drumsticks or caviar or finely salted crackers. You want food that is 'ready' to be consumed, you don't want be making up food or cooking food as in a barbecue. You got much more important things to do on a picnic like talk to your girlfriend, watch the day go by etc..
It depends on the occassion. For a Pride Week picnic, you have to pack fairy bread.
The most important to me is fresh food like juices, bread or meat and to read the newest issue of Cityweekend in the summer sun. Nothing makes a picnic more enjoyable!
to me, nothing says "picnic" (or 'pikkunikku,' as they pronounce it in Japanese) more than the onigiri you pull out from the basket! those rice balls wrapped in seaweed with surprise fillings -- pickled plum, salmon, roe, etc. -- mmMMmmm!
The most important item is Nacho Cheesier Doritos. After finishing the whole bag, just whipe your hands in the grass to clean them off.
The most important thing in the picnic basket is deviled eggs or some other easily devoured finger food i.e. carrots and dip. For my last picnic with friends in Zhongshan park, I made 32 eggs. The had been chilled all day and so stayed cool all afternoon and were delicious. They're always a good taste to finish with.
Decent tube or jar of mustard is essential to the picnic basket. It will save your picnic meal in case the sandwiches are boring or the potato salad is bland. Your ham or chunk of cheese will taste all the better with a squeeze of mustard.

I'll stack a mini ice box in it and load it with beer, ice-cream, food and all, if the capacity allows. It's summer time. We need to keep things cool and fresh.

just a bottle of cool white wine or rose and 2 (or more) real wineglasses. I hate those plastic things. and of course, you need some good company next to the picnic basket
Well, after taking out the bagels, smoked salmon, shrimps, salad, vinaigrette followed by a chilled glass of white wine, accompanied by strawberries and a dash of chocolate.... the ultimate item left to take out of the hamper would be a single red rose to show my loved one I care.
Nothing says picnic like a metre long baguette with a multitude of spreads (Available from Gubei Carrefour, near the foreign foods section. Don't say I never did anything for you Carrefour) Its like a 101 flavoured buffet meal. You don't like the ham? Then have the tuna. Don't like the Tuna, then there is always the Tomato. Don't like the Tomato, then go the southern hemisphere route with the Vegemite. When your finished dab and sweep the crumbs from affected areas, find a clear patch of grass and get the Frisbee out!
no doubt.. the classic red-checkered blanket which is synonymous to the word picnic. this completes the whole setting while sitting with your loved one on a sunny clear afternoon sky above.

A corkscrew, obviously ! You'll always find some guys around to boast about opening beer bottles with their lighter/teeth/spoon/sidewalk/100 RMB note (delete whichever does not apply) but wine bottles are another matter...
The mos popular item in a picnic basket in my opinion is peanutbutter sandwiches. It brings all the memories of childhood when my parents used to bring me and my sisters to a park and enjoy some sunshine, play games an eat nice, fullfilling peanutbutter sandwiches. Everytime I smell the peanutbutter it is like going back to the past and having all that good feelings again :)
Candy. You put the candy on the ground to one side, then you and the ants have separate picnics.

What’s the most important thing in a picnic basket? Space, baby, space. Sure, a good bottle of wine might impress a date, but so could a thinly-sliced apple, a finely-made sandwich, or even a clean, well-folded blanket and enough napkins to go around. I say include them all.
Maybe it’s just me, but I usually think of “picnics” only as a part of the mating ritual.. I suppose I could take a picnic basket along for an afternoon throwing Frisbee with the guys, but for those occasions, I carry provisions like chips and beer in a plastic sack from Carrefour’s. I pretty sure I’ve never ever been on a real “picnic” with a dude, although it could be I don’t know what I’m missing.
I only pack picnic baskets when I’m trying to impress a member of the opposite sex, and for that, I need all the help I can get. I need everything. I need the booze, the cheese, and the chocolate. I need music. I need flowers, if I can figure out how to squeeze them in. I need all the room you can give me. I need space, baby. I need all the space you got.
The wet wipes. Of course food and wine are also important, but without the wet wipes- there is no convenient way to to get clean hands before and after eating when sitting in a remote part of a large park.
My swiss army knife. It gets the wine open, the beers flowing. Opens the can of olives and preserved dolmades. Blades for slicing the cheese and bread. The blades help to slice or chop anything we forgot to before leaving home. Look, i even have a nail file in case i chip a nail while i'm out! It's life's little necessity!
Food, otherwise its just a basket.
Definitely a nice bottle of chilled white wine. There is something absolutely wonderful about sipping cool wine in the warm sunshine. It makes everything else taste better.
a BLANKET of course- as grass is not good for my sensitive buttocks, and leaves stains too.

Champagne - Sweet, bubbly goodness on a warm, sunny day... just for the taste or the intoxication to gain, The basket is not complete without this delightful treat.
Cheese cheese cheese. I like cheese. Blue, camembert, ash-coated brie, goats, fetta, vintage chedder, halumi, peppercorn, jahlsberg, gouda, manchego.... i could go on....

The most important item in a picnic basket – well, if it’s not the picnic basket itself, then really, it’s the picnic blanket alone. The picnic blanket is a required item that simply wouldn't make a picnic do without one. Because even if your basket might be looking kind of empty, a bit lonely with its lack of food and drinks, it’s always good just to kick and relax on a bright, sunny, picnic blanket, stretching it out, enjoying the sun with a loved one.
After all, aren’t many memories made on the picnic blanket instead of off it?
The most important item for me is chips. They are cheap and quick with no prep needed. But more importantly, there is nothing better than bonding with new friends on a picnic over crunchy chips that leave your blanket full of crumbs, but your tummy full of salty goodness!
