Got a hankering for some sushi? Fill up with a chirashi bowl. We hit up some of our favorite Japanese spots to find you three of the best in Shanghai. Check them out below.

Ginpei | Japanese
A specialty of the house, the “sea bream rice” is an unconventional chirashi bowl (RMB150) that shows off the freshness of Ginpei’s fish. Alongside the dish’s namesake, there’s also lusciously fatty salmon, lean tuna, a jumble of tiny sea-flavored octopus tentacles, pillows of sea urchin and sardines with flecks of silver skin still on, all served with freshly grated wasabi. It’s all topped with a generous handful of green onion and a raw orange egg yolk. Unlike the other two on this list, you can grab these bowls both at lunch and dinner.

Koyama | Japanese
Koyama offers over 400 traditional Japanese dishes and an expansive selection of sashimi, but during their busy lunch hours, they do a consistently solid chirashi bowl set that comes with chawanmushi (steamed egg), soup and an appetizer for just RMB88. Theirs is an everyday bowl focused on the basics with fresh cuts of fish–it’s topped with cuttlefish, salmon, yellowtail, lean tuna, tamago, fish cake and ebi shrimp. It’s available during lunch only, so book ahead.

Shinmachi | Japanese
Shinmachi, the do-it-all Japanese restaurant on Madang Lu, also does a solid chirashi lunch worth trying. Their traditional bowl is topped with octopus, sea bream, salmon, lean tuna and tamago and sometimes a couple extras like ark clam or fish cake as well. The RMB98 set comes with salad and chawanmushi (steamed egg), but it’s available for lunch only. It’s a great deal that puts Shinmachi’s offering at least on par with Koyama’s.
