Shanghai's Best Lasagna

When the weather starts to cool down there is no meal more satisfying than a big slice of piping hot lasagna. If layers of pasta sheets topped with béchamel and gooey cheese get you excited, then check out these three places to get your lasagna fix.

Boonna Café 3 | Cafés
At the budget end of our quest for Shanghai’s best lasagna we found a true gem at Boonna. Tucked away on the western end of Huaihai Zhong Lu, this indie café serves up delicious portions of lasagna that won’t break the bank. A mere RMB45 gets you a slice of heaven and small green salad. The upper crust of melted cheese is enough to satisfy your dairy craving, and the endless alternating layers of ricotta and minced meat are sure to satiate. We’d like to see a bit more tomato, but this European-style pasta, complete with béchamel, is a keeper.

Briccocafé Pasta & Pizza Lounge | Italian
Tucking into Briccocafé’s sizeable slice of lasagna elicited satisfied “mmms” from our crowd. It’s a creamy concoction best described as American meets European, meaning it’s a mountain of minced meat, ricotta and béchamel accompanied by a red sauce. After enjoying a few bites, we noticed a little something else—a bit of rosemary slyly hiding in the sauce. Smooth and full flavored, this layered delight is truly excellent.

Bella Mia | Italian
Mamma mia! If your grandmother were Italian, this is the lasagna she would make for you every Sunday night. With nearly every ingredient imported from Lo Stivale (The Boot), it’s a slice of Italy in Shanghai. Staying true to its northern roots, this lasagna substitutes the standard béchamel sauce for vine ripened deliciousness. Layers of ground beef and pasta are carefully coated in the best tomato sauce we’ve had in ages, and the first bite (always the most important) exudes fresh, homemade tomato sauce perfection. It’s all topped off with imported cheese and fresh basil.

HoF Lujiazui serves a variety of lasagnas that are all delightful. The seafood lasagna there is my favorite.
