Now that almost every venue on the Bund has an outside space–from Privé’s piddly little offering to the pimped terrace at CHAR–Bar Rouge has pushed the boat out this year and totally redesigned its outside space. The DJ has been moved outside and now plays from behind a completely renovated bar. There’s a central VIP area with its own waitstaff and the lighting has been tweaked so the whole space can be painted a multitude of hues. Plus, get this, all the tables light up and change color, too. If you need to call a waiter to change your ice bucket or bring you another bottle of Dom, hit a switch and your table will glow red.

The make-over is themed “Shanghai Vice,” after “Miami Vice,” because it borrows the color scheme and vibe from that sinful southern US city. Bar Rouge is booking a number of heavyweight acts to play monthly parties on the terrace. Earlier in May, Felix da Housecat came to town and this time it’s Kap N’Kirk, one half of Canada’s DJ /MC duo 4Korners. He’ll be dropping high-energy party tracks. Dancing girls will dance. The huge robot that made an appearance at the terrace-opening party might be back for more.

If you want a seat, book a table because it will be rammed, as BR is for most of the summer. But if you want to see the terrace without the crowds, it’s also open every night for after-work drinks, for the first time. Come down from 7pm each night and you can enjoy the view and the newly pimped-out terrace with no minimum spend at the tables.
