Superbowl Insanity: Stats about XLVI
Whether you obsess over the line, jump up and down in front of your flat-screen, sing along to the half-time performance or just show up for the chicken wings, the Super Bowl is an American institution. Below are some staggering statistics about the fans, the ads, the gluttony and the odds:
The Fans

American football fans are some of the most fervent sports spectators.
- More Americans are projected to watch the Superbowl than voted in the last presidential election.
- More drivers are involved in alcohol-related accidents on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year (except St. Patrick's Day), according to the Insurance Information Institute.
- According to Treehugger.com, there will be an average of 17 people at any given party.
-35% of people who attend the game write it off as a corporate expense.
The Food

Start fasting. This Sunday/Monday is one of this year’s fattiest days.
-It’s the second-largest single day of food consumption in the year—trailing only Thanksgiving. Pizza Hut, Dominos and Papa John’s receive twice as many phone calls than on any other day of the year.
-The average American consumes 1,200 calories while watching the game.
-71 million pounds of avocado (read guacamole) is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday.
-14,500 tons of chips are eaten along with that guacamole.
The Ads
-The Super Bowl achieves a Nielsen rating of 40-45, which is to say that 40-45 percent of households that have televisions—whether turned on or off—are watching the game. The number is three times as high as the NBA finals or the World Series.
-Budweiser has been the exclusive Super Bowl beer advertiser for the past 15 years.
-Super Bowl XLVI, broadcast on NBC, set a record for the highest price of a Super Bowl advertisement, selling 58 spots (including those longer than 30 seconds) during the game generating US $75 million for the network; the most expensive advertisement sold for $4 million.

The Game

Once we get past all the gluttony and entertainment, there’s actually a game to watch.
-The Patriots 2007 loss is one of the greatest upsets in NFL history. The only 16-0 team in regular season history that year don’t need a rematch to remind them of that monumental collapse. Even though only 24 players remain from that New England team, everyone suiting up for this year’s Super Bowl remembers how the 12-point favorite Patriots fell four quarters short of perfection.
- Giants Manning has proven he's clutch when it comes to fourth-quarter comebacks this year. His 14 fourth-quarter touchdown passes this season are tied for the most in a season in NFL history--the latest one coming against the New England Patriots in an exciting week 9 victory. That means that five of the Giants' six victories were a result of his performance in the fourth quarter which is eye-opening to say the least.
-Super Bowl XLVI will be Patriots coach Bill Belichick's eighth appearance in the game and fifth as a head coach. Giants coach Tom Coughlin on the other hand, is making his third Super Bowl appearance, second as a head coach. While Belichick is more experienced, Coughlin won when it mattered in Super Bowl XLII.
-Still looking for tickets? Expect prices to dip a bit. The best time to purchase is within 24-hours of kickoff. The cheapest seats on SeatGeek right now are for the 600 end zone section, which are going for $2,098. The most expensive listing is for a loge level suite that will cost $578,341.
