Dads Are Great And Deserve Great Beer

Being a Dad to a daughter (biased!) is the greatest thing in the world. Life finally has meaning, and your existence as a man ultimately makes sense. There are, of course, still some remaining males on around whom lack the simple sperm count, boob passion and biological wherewithal to complete the intricate physical movements necessary to make a child, but we shall rightly ignore them for now.

Normal and everyday things, occurrences and gesticulations become better when you are a Dad. This includes one of the top 5 greatest things on Earth: having an ice cold beer. A beer was divine before fatherhood, but afterwards, it has astonishingly grown into even more of a liquid elixir: a soother, a calmer, a quieter; a reliever of that which all fathers know best: stress.

Such a heavenly depressant should be treated with respect and awe, but sadly this is not always the case in Shanghai. Slightly odd beer. What person would stoop so low as to serve slightly odd beer? Badly refrigerated, badly poured, or just badly made (Suntory) beer.

Joyfully, this is not the case at Chloe’s. Walking in to this new-ish restaurant, it was empty. The waitress said “table for three?” so I wanted to say my bad joke (Dad joke!) “If you can find room for us!”, but stifled it.

After choosing our seats, we ordered, and the beer arrived. It was ‘only’ a Heineken. But it had been served to perfection. The beer was ice cold. The glass was ice cold and clearly diamond-clean – as the draft taps must have been. The beer smelt fantastic as soon as it hit the table. Though a mass-produced beer, the quality of care elevated it to tip-top delight.

The same was true of the ribs. The ribs are worth going there for alone (well, the mushroom soup is also highly recommended), so if any Dad wants to enjoy a huge plate of melt-in-your-mouth ribs and a great draft, go to Chloe’s and any regular daily stress will just melt away too.

More Dad stuff!:

  • Everyone knows Stampede Karting – but they have updated their lounge area (now if only they could update their Member karts so that the standard was the same on each visit…)

  • Has anyone been to SIC Karting, way out west?

  • Soccerworld – you need to book early (and speak basic booking-level Chinese. And have 9 – 13 chums to play with also)

  • Take the kid(s) to Disney on Ice in November and enjoy your favourite songs from (including) Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King, while claiming that you are only singing along for the children's sake, and not that you love and know all of the words, lyrical nuances and melodic inflections from all the songs, by heart.

Word to your mother Nick. Dads deserve beer, massages, ribs and nookie. Though a beer-flavoured rib massage might be pushing it.

Watching Mickey's Clubhouse with the daughter for the millionth time. Planning to break this up before too long with Stella's and pizza at Sasha's backyard. Thank god the kid likes pizza. Whatever you think about that place, the kid can run around and I get beer and pizza.

Oh and I recognize those ribs. Not too far from the office. Chloe's is a nice way to get out of the Lujiazui mall scene.
