City Weekend says: Expect this tiny art deco bar to be swinging soon, with a prominent place in Gulou down the hutong from some of the area's best haunts. It's a bit chilly in winter but with resident band The Hot Club of Beijing and a cup of warm wine, it's sure to heat up your nights.

cityweekend: Modern Classic
With a classic dark wood bar and a black-and-white tiled floor, this hutong bar invokes all the class of European art deco without the pretension. And the alcohol selection is impressive. The menu boasts 10 types of absinthe and whiskey (¥25-¥90), as well as a long list of reasonably-priced imported beers (¥15-¥40). The tiled floor will be a challenge to heat in the winter, but the delicious warm wine (¥20/¥35) will certainly help keep the chill at bay. Modernista is currently hosting silent movie nights, as well as swing jazz nights in conjunction with the Hot Club of Beijing. ■ Alex Searson

mikalafreasbeck: Order the sweet rice when they have it, skip the vegetable lasagna (unless you've brought your own spice rack or seasonings.. or just need something to soak up all the absinthe pooling in your belly). Their weekend buffet of small eats is a commendable effort, indeed.

hwimsley: Great place to hang out, the owners were very nice to me and the shots were righteous. Once they get the menu ironed out this place will be awesome.
