D Is for Decadence

You’ll spend some time looking for D Lounge, since the bar’s low-key exterior contrasts to the glowing entrances of the surrounding venues, but it’s worth it. Catering to a more discriminating crowd than its neighbors, the bar expects only the glamorous to enter and is frequently booked for private parties. With sky-high ceilings and exposed brick walls, D Lounge is the pinnacle of industrial chic—as well as echo chamber acoustics. The impressive preview menu, which will soon be expanded, already offers a wide variety of drinks, ¥50 for cocktails and ¥40 for mixed drinks. We tried the very strong lychee martini and the kiwi and strawberry caipiroska (¥60), prepared with fresh kiwis for a smooth fruity taste. Additionally, the D Lounge space will function as an arts space by day and also feature high-end designer street fashion. In the midst of Sanlitun’s darker dives, D Lounge is a sophisticated oasis of urban culture and divine drinks.

The place was quite empty but we liked the attention given to us and the drinks were good. Quiet place.

Many people would go to the D Lounge for drinking and chatting. You would notice people here can talk easier than other lounges where also play house music. Thanks to the excellent sound system they have so we are able to talk to our friends early without yowling to the ears. Quality drinks, good music, relaxing atmosphere, nice people, amazing sound system. It's hard to keep it up though as that would cause a lot of money I suppose. Jia you Jia you!

Excellent lounge, everything about this Lounge is just right . . music is good but you can hear what people are saying to you ! Clientele, is spot on (both the beautiful and the beautifully challenged people;-)
Staff make a mean cocktail !!! Even when I have been there on busy nights, the are equipped to handle the numbers without letting the service slip . . so Warren and the team there must be doing something right !
I am will be out in Beijing this weekend and it's first on my list to kick off the weekend !

Love the industrial chic interior. Also their quick and smiley service. Took a friend here since he was looking for a space for his birthday party and we got a very helpful staff explaining the venue. They have a cool private area. And great cocktails! Tried two of their ginger-infused cocktails. Love them all. Their baileys cocktail is also very tasty.

Been here 5 times since Christmas and so far I never have to be in a line to get in. In fact, I've never seen a line to get in even though inside is crowded. I didn't make any reservations for any of those visits. Mostly I just hang out at the bar or if I see empty seat, hey, lucky me.

On my last visit, my friend told me she has heard a lot of buzz about d.lounge and apparently people nowadays have only been talking about d.lounge and Xiu. I agree with her even though I like this place more than Xiu since it feels more relaxed.

Giving credit where its due, I stopped in at D-Lounge on New Year's Eve.

Gone was the pretense and attitude and, for that matter, the doorgirl/man. We got a couch without any fuss or muss and had several quality drinks.

The extension space in the back is gorgeous. I love the design.

I've always said, even when being critical of d-lounge, that its killer space and has solid barstaff. That remains true.

Dunno if it was just an "off" night when it comes to the previously-encountered haughty vibe or if the place has loosened its figurative Armani tie, but everyone in our group had a good time, and it seemed like others were as well. I'm happy to update my previous negative comments with a report of a much more enjoyable outing.

Hat tip to Warren...

Shut up all of you, I cant take this anymore! Dont you know by now that D lounge is only for really really incredible good looking people? Is that you? I think not. Warren is a beautiful funny man that I have such very very strong feelings for. He is trying bravely to clear up this smelly bourgeois town of halfwits & beggars. How dare you even think of criticizing my little pooh bear's new dollhouse?

So Remember: D is for Dominate, D is for Door, D is for Denied!

See you in fashion hell, bitche$!

Quite the essay you have there mr zippy.

Let me break it down for you and everyone else.

  1. We have the door policy because:

a. We usually get quite busy on weekends and we have to make sure that the people who actually reserve in advance get the proper service and attention they expect... and more. That and I save space for frequent guests so even if it seems empty at 9pm, I have to turn people away. If not, pretty much everyone can come and have a drink. I believe the crowd will choose itself in the end, not me.

b: Our capacity is 250 pax. Anymore and its gets uncomfortable and people wait a long time for drinks = guests not happy = warren not happy.

c: Someone has to be at the door to avoid drunk kids carrying qingdaos and prostitutes.

d. You make it seem like its unheard of, that and its not even that strict at d.lounge. Try getting into a place in tokyo. If you think about it, its really common sense. Many reservations + limited capacity + service standards = not everyone can come in.

  1. Does the quantity of people always = revenue?

Not always the case. Especially in nightlife. Everybody knows this.

  1. Will d.lounge die in 6 months?

Sorry mate, doesn't look like it.

Woah! Clearly those above unappreciative of d lounge's selective crowd haven't partied in cities like New York, London and Paris. I think this place is doing a great job picking the right (and not just well dressed) people to walk through the door.

Aside from the fantastic decor and tasty cocktails, this place sets the bar in Beijing for good people and great conversations.

I think the D must stand for "douchey," because that's what this pretentious, self-important, Manhattan wannabe has turned into.

I love it when I go to a bar and the bouncer/hostess look at me blank-faced, and then ask "may I help you?"

Yeah. You're a bar. Serve me a drink, jackass.

They claim to be having private parties or be at capacity or whathaveyou, but half the times I've been, the place has soju-scented tumbleweeds rolling through it.

The irony is, I've never actually been turned away, but I've seen it happen a few times now to other people, and its made me realize that this isn't the kind of establishment I'll be frequenting. Crapping on your clientele may get you flavor-of-the-month favor with the tourons and poseurs, but a year from now when the buzz has died down and you need to rely on regulars, you'll see you have none.

Its really a shame, because its killer space, and the bar staff are really good. Unfortunately, its being brought down by weak management that equates a line at the door with success. Hey, here's a thought for ya, Warren - people in your club = people buying drinks = revenue. If the club's half empty and you have a line of non-patrons outside wanting to get that gosh-darned-special feeling of belonging, too, its meaningless, because they aren't paying anything.

I heard someone describe dLounge as being the next China Doll in a complimentary way, shortly after it opened. They may be right, as dLounge will probably follow China Doll right down the toilet...

The space looks super cool and the drink I had (the kiwi and strawberry caipiroska) was really good. However, I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. Although I was dressed well and actually there with my friend to meet the manager, the guys at the door still barely let us in. Supposedly there was an "exclusive" private party that night, although by the time I left I had seen just about everyone I know in Beijing there, so didn't seem all that exclusive. This whole exclusive snotty attitude that seems to be taking off in Beijing (see also, Xiu) is super annoying. First of all, get over yourself--this is Beijing and people like it here bc it's relaxed. Second, once you get inside these places with arrogant bouncers, the crowd never seems to be any higher in quality than at places without the attitude. Anyway, all that aside, the actual reason I did not enjoy myself here and will not be returning is the acoustics. I could barely hear my friends sitting next to me, but instead could only hear the people ten feet away. I think this place would be cool if there were only 20 people there, but any more than that and it's just deafening.

Still in its soft opening, D lounge is another sleek alternative to hot spots Xiu, Punk or Q Bar. Managed by Warren Pang, formerly of Punk, d lounge offered funky couches, sleek lighting and a comfortable seating are. The loft like space is dominated by a spanish avantegarde style bar that looks like a freaky lava lamp. The walls are decorated with a rotating art exhibition. The drinks, which are definately in the Q Bar range, are made with fresh juice and generous pours. The place gets big bonus points for its food, which is delivered from its sister venue, Izakaya. We had sushi delivered to the bar, but almost any style of Japanese fare is available. I have yet to determine what kind of crowd D lounge will attract, but it certainly has the potential to make it in my regular rotation of SLT watering holes. FYI--No word on timing of hard opening.
